Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for January 12, 2012- Blazing New Paths (Vol.1, Iss.2)

Wide Path

 Blazing New Paths

Comfort can be found in the faces, the spaces, and the places that you find to be familiar. In the land of familiarity, you find it is easy to be around people you know, things you know and areas you know. It takes a great deal of courage to make a decision to go beyond the familiar and comfortable.

Once you decide to move pass what you know to get to a place where you can grow, you are Blazing New Paths. Here is a great example of how to exercise that Blazing New Paths spirit.

For the last eighteen years Laketha Anderson used her pleasant personality to connect herself to people in her organization. From the bottom to the top of Orange County Government everyone  had  encountered Laketha’s big smile that lights up the room as she trained the masses on policies, procedures and process.

Learning was a key component for Laketha and she did not only speak it, she walked it by Blazing New Paths and obtaining a college degree. Recognizing that wisdom is important, Laketha always surrounds herself with those who have knowledge that was useful to her professionally and personally.

The need to move to the next level nudged Laketha to explore other avenues, Blazing New Paths was the next step. It was exciting and scary at the same time, yet it was time for Laketha to start on another journey and to start Blazing New Paths.

At Laketha’s going away gathering colleagues, co-workers, and well-wishers were feeling a torn between joy and sadness to see her depart from a place of comfort and familiar. As she fought back tears, I could see that as much as she loved her job, it was her time to shine and she was soaring.

Congratulations Laketha Anderson, former Human Resources Expert for Orange County Government on her taking the big steps and Blazing New Paths at Darden Restaurants in their Human Resources. Laketha, enjoy the next phase of your professional life, we will miss your smiling face in the place but know that you are going forward and Blazing New Paths.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 9/29/11-Speak from your Spirit (Vol.9, Iss.4)

Speak up, make your voice heard

Speak from your Spirit

Speak from your spirit deep down within
Its rumored to be the place your pain goes to mend
Cascade through the slopes of the hills and the valleys at tall peaks
Dig down in there so your soul might speak
Ain’t no need to be shy on the matter
For we all have things restless in our souls seeking to splatter
So spill it like the beans or the bucket of stuff
The longer you hold it the more it get ruff
You know its kinda hard round them ends
Mold it, fold it try to make sure it blends
What creeps out from the depths might shock you
Hidden in your dark space waiting to
Burst up on the scene and be seen by many
Bringin it new and comin with plenty
So work past the fear with new courage you wear
Excuse me, move over, that is your spirited soul in there.

It has been a week, and I need to report how I exercised my four L’s-Live, Laugh, Love, Learn.

I continually try to make living better a priority.
Life is all about how we choose to live it. There were times this week that made life matter so much more. Everyday we have to live a cherished life.

Laugh when you feel like crying.
Find a reason to laugh at something in your life. On several ocassions I just let out a big old gut-felt laugh at myself or something happening around me.

Love is the answer to all things wrong in the world.

It is all about love and love covers so many things. My heart was open to love people even when it did not make sense. Exercising love takes work, patience and understanding.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for May 19,2011- Turning the Tears to a S.M.I.L.E. (Vol.5, Iss.3)

smile!

Image via Wikipedia

“Turn the Tears to a S.M.I.L.E.”

Following my usual Thursday routine, I was rushing to get the trash can down to the curb and talking to my Mom on the telephone when I heard the wailing of a young child. My Mom mentioned what is wrong with that child, and I told her I was looking to see where the cries where coming from. As I hung up with Mom, the crying got closer and I saw two little boys walking towards me across the street. I waited at the curb as the two boys spotted me, one boy in tears was being comforted by the boy who was a little older. I asked the older boy if the crying boy was okay and he merely shook his head and said, “oh, no”.

I looked into the deer shaped eyes full of streaming tears and told the little boy it was going to be alright. The little boy was trying to calm his tears and tell me what had made him cry. As he struggled to get out words his comforting friend chimed in, “Lil man can up and took his glasses”. Just the sound of what happened to him brought on a new set of tears. Finally the crying little boy said, “I closed my eyes and he took my glasses off my face and then took off running.” I asked where did the boy go with his glasses and they both spoke in unison, “to school” and pointed straight ahead. I asked few other questions: was the little boy alone? Did he know his real name? Is he in your class and is he your age or older? The boys let me know that Lil Man was with a older girl, and they did not know his real name and he was 6 years old in kindergarten at Rosemont Elementary.

The crying boy was now calm, and rubbing his eyes. I asked him his name and his age, to which he responded “Cordell and I am five years old”. I responded, “Glad to meet you, Cordell, I am Miss Yolanda.” I again told Cordell it was going to be okay, and asked for a SMILE. Cordell said he was mad about his glasses and wanted to find “Lil Man” and his glasses and did not want to SMILE. I began to walk with the two boys as they continued towards the fence that leads into the school and Rosemont Park. The boy who was comforting stopped at a parking barrier and said he was going to wait on his sister.

Cordell looked back at his friend who had stopped and proceed to tell me things that broke my heart. A sadness came back into his face, as he spoke, ” I am hungry, my Mama did not give me my snack this morning. These bugs are bothering me, just like the roaches at the house.” I listened and then asked if he would eat breakfast at school, he said, “the breakfast is over by now, but I have a dollar can will buy something.” Once Cordell spoke of his Mama, I saw this as a chance to see where was she when “Lil Man” was busy taking Cordell’s glasses. Without much thought Cordell said “My Mama’s door was locked, so she did not come out.” I wish Cordell was kidding but this was his reality and he was coping as best as his five-year-old mind would allow.

I looked down at Cordell and asked if he would do something for me. Shaking his head up and down, was an indicator that he was feeling better. “Cordell will you give me a SMILE, please.” As if he were posing for a camera, Cordell shared a big old cheesy SMILE. I SMILED back and asked about his missing teeth. “I keep loosing these teeth out of my mouth. I still have two teeth that are shaky.See them…” Cordell gave me a high-five, and a low five and another SMILE. I told Cordell to tell his teacher about “Lil Man” taking his glasses and ask for help to get them back. I walked with Cordell until he reached inside the fence and skipped along towards the school. I hoped that Cordell would find his glasses, get some food to eat, be given better living conditions and find a reason to SMILE.

I was glad I heard Cordell crying this morning, it was well worth our coming together. I could not get his glasses back, I could not find “Lil Man”, I could not bring his Mama out of the house to take care of her baby, I could not change his living conditions. I did stop Cordell’s tears, I did get him to talk and settle down. The biggest thing I received from Cordell was that huge beaming light sprinkled with those beautiful missing spaces…a SMILE.The actions of Cordell made me see SMILE in this way:Seeking Motivation Inspiration Laughter Everyday.

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for May 10, 2011-National Women’s Health Month (Vol.3, Iss.2)

Girls' Night Out for Women’s Health, hosted by...

Image by Christiana Care via Flickr

Did you know that your Health is your Greatest Wealth?

Listen up women here’s a newsflash for you: Your health is your greatest wealth; it is what fuels your life and living. All too often women are too busy living to concern themselves with the centerpiece of their existence, their health. Children, husbands or significant others, family, friends, careers and whatever is being pursued comes before the health.  It appears that thinking of or focusing on your health is secondary to all the other people, places and possessions in your life. Now more than ever women need to show a greater level of care and concern for their own health. How can you be your best for others and do less for yourself?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services‘ Office on Women’s Health designated the week of May 8-14 as National Women’s Health Week. The promotion of women’s health during this week is a gateway for women to focus on being better and doing better for themselves. The theme of this year’s campaign is “It’s Your Time”. All over the country various organizations, groups and individuals are planning events all in the name of women’s health. Women “It’s Your Time” so honor and celebrate you, by making an investment in your health. To find out what more about National Women’s Health Week 2011, go to http://www.womenshealth.gov/whw/about/ .

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for March 31, 2011-Bill’s Story Could Be Your Story -The Invisibles continued (Vol.3, Iss.3)

Flickr - …trialsanderrors - The Roads to Heave...

Image via Wikipedia

Bob, Brad, or Bill could be his name but how would you know, you are so consumed with his appearance you never consider he is a human being, just like you.Sure Bill is unkempt, in need of a long hot shower, haircut, and shave, but these are luxuries to somone struggling to survive on the streets.

Bill is posted on the block and within the box made of broken blue lines on the cobbled concrete. While standing inside the box Bill can legally ask for a handout from those passing by his space.

Bill was not always relegated to a box on the block. The downturn in the economy, an injury that seems to linger and a series of losses job, family, house took away life as he knew it.

Bill was a homeowner, a husband, and a hard worker living a good life.  Currently  Bill is homeless,  separated from his family, and humbled by his new existence.  In an instant his status changed and he began a downward spiral to living life on the streets. Bill’s place, his new home, is where he walked many days yet he never imagined this would be his story.

Bill’s story is as common as the winds that swirl and quickly change. There are so many “Bill’s” out there who are trying to figure out how to make it and survive day-to-day. Be aware that in an instant Bill’s story can become your story…

Thursday Thoughts by YoTrip for March 24, 2011 (Vol. 1, Iss. 2) The Unexpected Encounter

Symbol for subway / metro. NON-OFFICIAL

Image via Wikipedia

Have you ever had a day of days? From the time of your rising, which was late, to your leaving your home, the day was proving to be a challenge. The travelers in traffic were tripping and every light was happy to hold you hostage. You arrived at your place of work and it was an extension of the start of your day.

The day seemed to only bring problems and few solutions to your office. Each time you found a resolution another issue of opportunity came into the mist. By lunch  time you were only halfway through the day and the possibility of seeing a happy ending seemed out of your reach for you today.

You went from meeting to meeting tuning out the monotone voices speaking long and offer little in the way of solutions. Before long you have written out an action plan for the last meeting you attended and attempted to anticipate your needs for the next meeting. You were on point about the next meeting and struggled to its completion.

After three meetings, two issues that challenged your ability to maintain your cool, and not to mention a late rising, and a major effort to even make it to work, you finally reached the end of the work day. As you sat in your office decompressing the events of the day, you remembered you had an appointment , so you quickly gathered your things and head to your car.

You drive in silence as you seek to eliminate the noise of the day playing loudly in your mind. Once you arrive at your appointment you notice an empty parking lot and wonder if your days were mixed up. Suddenly you recalled the meeting time was pushed back an hour and a half. Having time on your side you decide to get some dinner at the strip up the road. You recalled a Thai spot had moved in the strip and you never had time to try it out. As you approached the restaurant wondering if it was open, you step inside and are greeted by the hostess. The place was empty then a couple who appeared to be regulars walked in and were addressed by the staff. Nothing on the menu appealed to you so you smile politely and walk out of the restaurant.

You looked up and saw the glowing golden sign for a place that always pleases:SUBWAY. You enter the doors and hear two male voices greet you, but you barely see them as one is in the kitchen and the other in the doorway. The two young men had something that stood out, their smiles fill and light up the room. You ask what they are doing and smiling the tall slim young man  shares that he is encouraging  the  large young man with the baby face to sing. You came to Subway for a sandwich, but would enjoy a song as bonus. The slim young man egged the baby face on but immediately see the beaming smile and shyness that did not produce a song.

The slim young man offers that baby face is talent but he lacks confidence. You ask why baby face does not believe he can do anything and be great at doing it. Smiling baby face tells you he can sing but lost his desire to sing. The slim young man chimes in that he loves to sing and that a song changed his life.

For the next hour and a half you listened to how the slim young man gave his life to Christ after the tragic death of a friend during a crime gone bad. A song was birth out of the tragedy and young slim sang at his friends grave side. The death moved the slim young man from gun-carrying thug to God-fearing manager. Tears welled in his eyes as he shared his life changing testimony. You were touched and told him he was amazing and a blessing.

Baby face began to open up and share how he was a promising football star who went to school on a scholarship but got caught in a scandal that began a series of losses: scholarship, school, girlfriend, and the greatest his champion, his father. Baby face did not think he could go on and was depressed for a time. The heavenly voice of his father spoke to him and said you can make it, so he entered Devry University and got the Subway job. Writing discussion has made him want to quit, you told him to use his ability to run plays as a transferable skill, this brought the big smile back to his face. At times Baby face struggles with staying focused and thinks he needs to speak with someone for help. You tell him to utilize the school or Subway’s EAP program.
The slim young man is excited and keeps thanking you for your listening and sharing. Baby face chimes in that you were sent into this Subway for a reason, and you all smile at each other. You ask both young men to never give up on their hopes and dreams. You tell them the sky is limitless and the best was yet to come in their lives. You give them your card, a strong hug of encouragement and tell them to stay in touch.

Carrying your sandwich and drink, all you can do is wipe away a tear as this encounter has erase away all the ills and complaints of the day. You entered the Subway shop for a sandwich, and the encounter with slim young man and Baby face was much more fulfilling. Never underestimate the power of the encounter it can be the difference in turning your day around.
