Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 9/29/11-Speak from your Spirit (Vol.9, Iss.4)

Speak up, make your voice heard

Speak from your Spirit

Speak from your spirit deep down within
Its rumored to be the place your pain goes to mend
Cascade through the slopes of the hills and the valleys at tall peaks
Dig down in there so your soul might speak
Ain’t no need to be shy on the matter
For we all have things restless in our souls seeking to splatter
So spill it like the beans or the bucket of stuff
The longer you hold it the more it get ruff
You know its kinda hard round them ends
Mold it, fold it try to make sure it blends
What creeps out from the depths might shock you
Hidden in your dark space waiting to
Burst up on the scene and be seen by many
Bringin it new and comin with plenty
So work past the fear with new courage you wear
Excuse me, move over, that is your spirited soul in there.

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for September 27, 2011-Soaps/the “Stories” (Vol.6, Iss.4)

Soaps/ The “Stories” In The Afternoon

My grandma, Ruth Washington Anderson, was a major fan of the “stories” or as they are penned by many, soap operas. My early years were built around the afternoon drama of the “stories”. During the weekdays, my grandma would finish her work and be faithfully posted in front of the television for the latest happenings on “Guiding Light“, “As The World Turns“, and “The Young and the Restless“. Everyone knew not to bother with grandma when her “stories” were on the television, she was so involved with the storyline. The characters were real for Grandma, and she often had conversations with the characters as the “stories” played out. All of Grandma’s grand children were accustomed to the routines of the watching the “stories”. The evolution of the soap operas were driven by the sponsors of these weekday dramas, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and Lever Brothers were the glue as they featured useful products that women who watched these programs could use.

When I started my formal education at Sand Bar Ferry Elementary School in Augusta, Georgia as a first grader, I felt the effects of my daily dose of  “stories”. As my teacher, Miss Crummings would put the students down for an afternoon nap I was her assistant who helped with preparing the assignment once everyone woke from sleeping. All I could think about was that I was missing my “stories” as I transitioned into school.  As I grew into a  youngster, then a teenager and move into my college years, I kept my affinity for the “stories, but unlike Grandma I liked “Edge of Night”, “Ryan’s Hope”, “All My Children“, “One Life to Live” and “Bold and Beautiful”. The funny thing about the “stories” was that if you did not watch for a few days, a week or several months it did not take long to get back into the storyline and watching to get caught up in the drama.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the long-running soaps “All My Children”‘ and “One Life to Live” would be ending their production in September and January respectively. Both of these popular and progressive shows had seen their share of highs and lows in their  heyday, but the changing dynamics of the daytime offerings and the decline in viewers ended their shows. The loyal fan base were heartbroken that their beloved shows were going away, but stay tuned or log on these “stories” will now become Internet shows in 2012. After 42 years, “All My Children” ran its last show on Friday, September 23,2011, and “One Life to Live” will close in January. Hats off to creator Agnes Nixon and leading lady extraordinaire Susan Lucci, Erica Kane and the cast of “All My Children”, thanks for all the wonderful years of soaps/”stories” in the afternoon.

Thursday Thinking by Yotrip for September 22, 2011 When Autumn Blazes In…(Vol.6, Iss.2)

When Autumn Blazes In…

When Autumn Blazes In…
It is the 3rd week in the month of September
A time most we always recall
It is the close of summer and the opening of fall
In places that are not humid and hot
This welcomed change in the air does really hit the spot
The Autumn Blaze is an amazing infusion of cool and warm colors abound
Browns, greens, reds, and yellows are all around
When Autumn Blazes in… for those like a crispness in their swag
This emerging season comes right out the bag
A prelude to winter’s beginning signal to summer’s end
When Autumn Blazes in you experience the seasons mixing in a playful blend
When Autumn Blazes in we seek to wrap up in clothes for warmth and comfort in kind
Be it arms, legs, and feet we become hard press  to find.
When Autumn Blazes in all the enviroment must take notice and take a bow. The more you think and see,the only word you have is WOW!

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for, September 20, 2011-What Makes You Take A Stand? (Vol.6, Iss.3)

image

“What Makes You Take A Stand?”

I recently had a friend say to me, “It’s okay you know you cannot save the world.” This comment was said, as a result of me sharing my frustration with how our community is more concerned with bringing business in as opposed to what is taking people out. It is so easy to disassociate, discount, or dismiss what is happening in the community we live, work and play in daily. The question I pose to you is: What makes you take a stand?

Sure when you think about what makes you take a stand, it is about what tugs at your passion. Some take a  stand for people who they feel need, a voice. There are those that stand up for a place because of what a place means to you. Also there are those who choose to take a stand for possessions. Be it people, places, or possessions that moved you, the courage to stand up speaks volumes.

So let me challenge you and your passion for that which drives you. Go now and take a stand! Sure you cannot save the world but you can seek to save at least one.If something matters to you, take a leap from your seat and show the world what makes you take a, stand!

Saturday Sayings by YoTrip for September 17, 2011-A Simplier Time (Vol.1, Iss.2)

image

A Simplier Time (Vol.1, Iss.2)

Saturday’s back in the day, were a simplier time. Oh how Saturdays were looked forward to because we had our chores list to complete after breakfast. Once the work was done we could play in our room, we could go outside and play in the yard, or play in the neighborhood.

Those Saturday’s were a simplier time. The sounds of music filled the air as we jammed on our boom box with our cassette tapes to Prince, Micheal Jackson, Madonna and others. We sang along with the music and pretended we were in the videos that played on Soul Train and American Bandstand. The times were so simplier than they are now.

We had Pac-man and Centiped slow moving video games, not play stations and Xbox 360. Cable tv had at most, 25 channels, not 250. We watched sitcoms and dramas, not over the top reality shows and drama filled talk shows. The news was informative and on at 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm, not entertainment that runs around the clock. It was a simplier time.

I am the first one to embrace change and doing things to improve, but this “microwave mentality” is out of control. It is time to add some simplier things to our fast-paced living. When was the last time you looked at nature and your surroundings. Learn to turn off the madness of the world and watch some TV Land, catch one of the old shows.

Sure we are all busy and have full lives to live, but  time is  flying by quickly, so start now!  A simplier time is waiting, grab hold and  make it happen.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for September 15, 2011-WHY (Vol.9 Iss.2)

WHY

When we are faced with the unexpected happenings in life, it is causes us to wonder: WHY. Our human makeup will always drive us on a quest to know the reason to questions that may not have answers… WHY

This morning I woke up with a plan, I was able to exercise a bit, as I seek to get back on track. Today, I listened intently as my friend, Monica May, local radio personality, reported on an overnight murder of a woman in downtown Orlando, the police were on the scene and conducting an investigation… WHY

Within a hour, the victim of the shooting had been identifiied. I  get a call from a friend, telling me to turn on the tv, and within, a minute your picture is on the screen…WHY

The police  spokesperson  said that you were driving and was shot, you continued to drive befote the car stopped. There was a passenger in the car, who was not injured… WHY

For a mere 21 years were you with us. A young wonan chikd, a daughter,a sister,a grandchild, a niece, a friend. The 21st murder in the City Beautiful… WHY

Your quirky, pleasant smile seared in my memory. I pray your family comfort, and the Father’s arms of care. May your soul be at rest.

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for September 13, 2011-LISTEN (Vol.6, Iss.2)

lis·ten

Definition of LISTEN

1: to pay attention to sound

2: to hear something with thoughtful attention : give consideration

3: to be alert to catch an expected sound

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/listen

LISTEN

Have you ever really took the time to merely LISTEN, not utter a word. I had a light bulb moment this morning, I had to admit that so often I am so busy talking, I spend little time utilizing my ability to  LISTEN.

While involved in a discussion, I was told that sometimes we need to just LISTEN and not talk. Now certainly, this was not a new concept but I think my ears were hearing differently.

LISTEN, can you hear me? The very essence of using your LISTENING skills is the foundation of communication. Be open to exercising your LISTENING power.
Words have the power to help you, hurt you, or heal you when you stop and LISTEN.

When we pause and LISTEN, it allows us an opportunity to absorb and take in what others are saying. We can learn a lot by opening our ears more and our mouths less. LISTENING Is a practice to enbrace, and will take time to master. It is not easy to talk and LISTEN at the same time, usually something gets overlooked or missed.

I am vowing to work on becoming a better LISTENER. The acknowledgment of the need to LISTEN more and talk less, is an important first step. Here is my personal buzz phrase, “LISTEN more, learn more. LISTEN less, learn less. I can hear you because I take the time to LISTEN!

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for September 9, 2011- I Remember When… The Tragedy of, September 11, 2001 (Vol.9, Iss.1)

 I Remember When…The Tragedy of September 11, 2001

Sunday marks the 10 year commeneration of the attacks that took place on September 11, 2001. As the United States and others in the world reflect and recall the events of that day, you hear so many people questioning and wondering if after a decade we are safer, than before.

I definitely see safety as a concern, but we as a nation we were shook into a new reality with the terrorist attacks a decade ago. As we entered an age of Homeland Security with increased checks, marshalls on flights, and attack dogs, we see this as  necessary actions and apart of our daily living.

The tragedy of the 2001 attacks left  a void in the nation with the  loss of people, possession and places.  The bombing of the World Trade center towers, the failed flight headed to the Pentagon saw thousands dead and millions left with a permanent scar as a, reminder of what took place.

The phrase “We Shall Never Forget”,became a marching order for the nation. We saw the countless heroes and sheroes who were first responders, work tirelessly to rescue and recover the injured, missing and lost. Our sense of safety compromised, our belief in our role as an immovable power crushed, but our ability to survive tragedy has remained constant. It will take a few lifetimes to heal from the hurt, yet each year the attacks will be remembered like it was a Tuesday of yesterday.

I know like so, many I can recall my own whereabouts on that Tuesday morning a decade ago. I along with two others were tasked with being on a hiring team to add a cashier to our staff.

Our first interview was at 9:30 am. As we assembled in the 3rd floor conference room with our candidate about 25 minutes into the interview, we were interrupted by loud conversation from the offices that shared a wall with our room. We apologized for the distraction and finished the interview. Upon going downstairs I found out that there were reports of an attack on the World Trade Center.
Everyone was glued to the television watching in horror and disbelief as, the tragedy unfolded. Our interviews continued but it difficult to go through the process for all parties that day.

As we gather, remember, and recount the tragedy of the attacks, of September 11th  let us pause and pray those who parished and those who survived. Lest we forget…

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for September 6, 2011-Memories of Labor Day Past (Vol.6, Iss.1)

image

Memories of Labor Day Past

The first Monday in September is designated as Labor day, when we pause and salute the Anerican worker. Labor day also  brings summer to a close, and all school-age children return to the classroom. The fashion debate for,all seasons: is “white” acceptable to wear beyond this date, and has, authority to say “yes”. It was not Labor day weekend without Jerry Lewis filling the television airways on the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, an entertaining spectacle to help raise money and awareness for this debiliating condition.
For many families, Labor day is the last gathering of the season with food, fellowship, and fun.

Like it was yesterday, I recall being with family and friends in the ’70’s & ’80’s at one of the familiar houses or parks to celebrate. The men could be found mastering the grill with massive amounts of meats to be grilled. The women made the sides and sweets-salads and vegetables of every kind, with cakes and pies to booth. The children ate snacks and played games with an anticipation of the scrumptious food being prepared.

As day turned to night, we saw the appearance of fireworks. The sky was lit up in an amazing explosion of colours dispatched from the grounds below. The young children, ran around with sparklers and snap pops, it was low level night lights, but fun just the same.

The Labor day memories, makes me wish for days of time gone by and by. Coming together and enjoying Labor day as summer’s last hurrah, was always so much fun. Let me say, happy end of the hot summer days, and hello to the coming fall season.
