Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip-January 26, 2010-Mentoring (Vol.1, Iss.4)

Mentor is defined by Dictionary.com as,”To serve as a trusted counselor or teacher, especially in occupational settings. A wise and trusted counselor or teacher, an influential senior sponsor or supporter.”

January has been set aside as National Mentoring Month and has been observed since 2001, Created by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR, National Mentoring Month (NMM) is marking its ninth year in 2010. By focusing national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us—individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits—can work together to increase the number of mentors, we assure brighter futures for our young people. http://www.nationalmentoringmonth.org/about_nmm/

Mentoring is needed in our communities to help guide our youth. The time spent with a young person gives you an opportunity to make an impact in their lives. As a long-time mentor, I have had some great experiences watching young people grow and flourish. Many times, I have received a call or an e-mail from a teen or college student telling me of their accomplishments. I find myself smiling as I think back to who they once were and beam with joy at who these young people have become.
There are so many young people that need someone to fill in the gaps in their life. A listening ear, time sharing at a favorite activity, or exposing them to elements of living they never expected to enjoy. A mentor can help change the course of a young person’s outlook on their future. The mentor works as a guide to help lead the mentee to thinking better, feeling better and making better choices. Mentoring makes the difference and comes highly recommended by one who has seen the transformation of countless youth in our community. Consider connecting with one of the mentoring groups in our community. Believe me as a mentor you will see that, “time given, is time well spent when a difference is made in the life of a child.”

PEOPLE, oh people as I pause on the the path to a place called PURPOSE, I position my perception to preview the palace I am pursuing with passion. Probable becomes possible when we prevail in persistence toward the present. In other words, when we are moving toward some set goal or that thing that drives our inner self once we see it, then we are destined to achieve it.” 1/25/2010

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip, January 19, 2010-FEAR Drives Us…(Vol.1, Iss.3)

FEAR DRIVES US…

FEAR can drive you to many destinations, you decide which route works best for getting you there. Most often we do not see FEAR from the positive aspects it offers. FEAR has a way of taking on its opponent by looking you square in the eye and saying retreat, you will never get pass me.FEAR only has as much power as we give it. We can choose to build FEAR up or to beat FEAR down. FEAR can come in and take up residency, like a child who exclaims they are never moving out.

FEAR we have all felt it in various forms: as a kid who broke something when we refused to heed parental warnings. When we were teenagers and we stayed out pass curfew, FEAR had us unaware of what punishment awaited us upon our return. In the college years, we partied a lot and studied a little and the professor gave us a test we were fearful of trying to pass. As adults, we go to a job interview excited with the prospect of a new opportunity and then walk into the room and nearly pass out when asked a simple question. The list of FEARS are endless and different for each of us. The difference is seen in our approach or our avoidance of the FEARS we encounter.Let me be clear, I so struggle with some FEARS, and do not know if I will ever get over them. I also know that time and our need to get pass FEAR is a great help and healer.

As a child I had a great FEAR of needles. During many a doctors visits to the base hospital at Fort Gordon, I could be heard screaming at our house in “the bottom” of East Augusta. My Dad would have to hold me down as I kicked and screamed in FEAR for my dear life. It appeared the older I got the intensity of my episodes at the sight of a needle were on display. The FEAR of needles was crippling me, hampering me and defeating me.

In 1999, while I was waiting for an appointment with my doctor. I was told the doctor had been delayed and would see me in an hour. I had been dropped off to that appointment and could not locate anyone to pick me up. I decided to walk out of the office building and grab lunch. On my way to the Nature’s Table was the Blood Bank and a sign that said “Give the gift of life, donate blood.” I thought to myself, I can do this and slowly entered the building. Upon entering the Blood bank I was greeted by the staff and gave them my information and explained my history and FEAR of needles. The receptionist took my paperwork and I waiting in FEAR to hear my name called. The young lady called my name and I was glued to my seat, once I composed myself to stand I made the journey that would help me face one of my greatest FEARS. The staff made me feel comfortable and explained everything to put me at ease. In the moment when the needle pricked my skin I thought with a mixture of tears and laughter of my childhood antics and my Dad holding me down. Here I was facing my FEAR and embracing the idea that FEAR only has a space and a place if we make room for it. My FEAR of needles had been defeated, and I celebrated with a great lunch and walked back to my doctor’s appointment proud of what I had accomplished.

Conquering FEAR is never easy but until you take FEAR on and seek to overcome it, defeat wins each and every time. So I ask, where is FEAR DRIVING YOU TODAY? WHAT STEPS WILL YOU TAKE TO DEFEAT THE FEARS THAT HOLD YOU BACK IN LIFE? 1/19/2010

Continue to pray for the people of HAITI

YoTrip-Words and Thoughts for Friday, January 15, 2010-Loyal Service (Vol1. Iss.5)

LOYALTY is a requirement to show your commitment to a cause. To whom or for what is your allegiance? What or who are you passionately pursuing? What or to whom is your calling to fulfill?

In life we must always have something or someone we uphold to such an esteem that we would lay down or pick up our sword for without little or no thought. Some would say, I have no LOYALTY that moves to such a level of giving. I would implore you to open your heart and mind to a different way of thinking. If we are not committed to a cause, then it is apparent that our allegiance, our passion and our calling are empty vessels waiting to be filled. Filling our vessel comes with the knowledge of knowing that we will be made better as a result of the actions we take.

We must gather ourselves together and see that LOYALTY is wrapped in the strength of one word: SERVICE. So now I ask: Who are you serving? What are you serving? When are you serving? Where are you serving? How are your serving? Today more than ever, if these questions lay dormant with a response from you, let this be a BIG push to move you toward finding your LOYAL place in SERVICE.” 1/15/10

Faithful Friday– Happy 81st Birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. we honor your commitment to humbly serve.
