A place and space for me to express my thoughts

Archive for the month “January, 2014”

It Been 20 Years…

This week marks the anniversary of my arrival in the land of Mickey (Orlando) from the land of Country Music (Nashville). It is funny how the time has passed  as I reflect back to that face, that place, that space of January 1994…

In the days to come I will recall, revisit and remember the journey from Nashville or shall I say Antioch, Tennessee to Orlando, Florida.

It seems like yesterday when I received the call from my husband (yes I was a “Mrs.” back then. Another post for another time) saying the company (Olive Garden/OG) had accepted the proposal we developed, was ready to move forward and move us to sunny Orlando, Florida.

I was a ball of emotions trying to take in the fact that we were leaving Nashville (a place that had grown to be home in my three years there) and heading southward to Orlando. This was it.

Before we moved the OG brought us down for a visit and to help with the transition. We stayed at the then Adams Mark Hotel which is attached to the Florida Mall. While my husband met with his new bosses, I hung out at the mall and planned for our upcoming moving date and looked at where I would work once we settled in to Orlando.

During our visit we were wined and dined with Presidents and Vice Presidents and other corporate big wigs.

Our time in Orlando was fun and full of relaxation. I arrived in Nashville in relation mode. Over the next month, I was in relocation mode. I had to be ready when the movers arrived.

This move was apart of our dream. All we had to do was be ready to go forward. It was still scary going to a new lands. A co-worker knew I loved by Dr. Maya Angelou so she gave me the book,” I Won’t Take Nothing For My Journey”, the title speaks volumes to where we were going.

On Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr weekend in January 1994 Tim, Snoopy (the dog) and I headed to Augusta, Georgia to see my family and friends and to rest.

After 20 years, I have had some ups and downs, some wins and some loss. I am here and still standing. I can truly say, The Best Is Yet To Come!

And It Went Tumbling Down…

The LG G2 the shattered face edition

The LG G2 the shattered face Edition

On Christmas eve I broke down and purchased a new cellphone. I was planning on getting a phone but when a friend could not get information off my old Samsung HTC because the cord was not connecting. I looked shocked yet I knew the end was past near, it was OVA! I was simply told, “Go get a phone!”

I was so excited to get the newest phone on the market, the LG G2! I am an Android Woman, so this phone fit the bill for my needs. Sleek, Solid, and Sound this LG G2 was  a great choice for a Smartphone. As the salesman spoke of all its bells and whistles, I read up on and 0 compared it to the Galaxy 4.  The salesman had his own LG G2 in his pocket, it fit perfectly and he did not mind flashing it at me to close the deal. After some 45 minutes, I was studying and contemplating, don’t judge the madness in my method!

In an effort to add on to the  sale of the phone, I was offered this contraption to hold the phone and protect it from all hurt, harm and danger. I politely declined. The case costed more than what I was paying at this point of sale, so I would go online to find a case and car charger.

I left the store and realized I did not even find out how to answer the phone. I needed to get home and pack for my trip to LA (lovely Augusta) for the holidays. I went home had  an enjoyable holiday and learned little about my new toy.

New Year’s Day, I decided to  stay the course of my commitment to keep my body moving  and went for a morning walk at Rose park. I had added the app to track my time and distance, on my new phone. I was so proud of  myself for going the distance and finishing the course. I went to do some stretching and cool down when that LG G2 decided to tumble out of my pocket.  The face of the screen had a diagonal  crack line that ran right to left. I was crushed and kicking myself for not getting that case.

Since it was a holiday, the stores were opened but I was directed to the insurance claim company for assistance. I have insurance so it could be replaced.once I went through the prompts on the phone  only to be sent to the website to make a claim. I was looking at 48 hours  or longer (due to the holiday) with no communication in quick access. How would I make it?

Well I was being tested for endurance. At first I thought I would go crazy. Well I survived, I got a new phone after 5 days! I struggled but I made it through! The tumble was my trying time, that turned in to my testimony of patience in the process. Yes I did get a case for covering  and protection.

Happy Birthday Miss Zora Neale Hurston

Zora Neale Hurston's 123rd Birthday

In a place called Notasulga, Alabama  on January 7, 1891, Zora Neale was born  the fifth of eight children, to John Hurston, a carpenter and Baptist preacher, and Lucy Potts Hurston, a former schoolteacher. The family moved to the historic Town of Eatonville. Established in 1887, the rural community near Orlando was the nation’s first incorporated black township. It was, as Hurston described it, “a city of five lakes, three croquet courts, three hundred brown skins, three hundred good swimmers, plenty guavas, two schools, and no jailhouse.” http://zoranealehurston.com/about/

Today marks the 123rd birthday celebration of the prolific writer and anthropologist. A true Renaissance Woman, Miss Zora was always adding layers to colorful life. I am glad I was introduced to her as a young girl growing up in LA (lovely Augusta, Georgia) and I am glad to say I live a stone’s  throw away from Eatonville the place she called home for many years.

During the 1930’s and ’40’s Miss Zora was at the height of her  literary career she penned ,Their Eyes Were Watching God, in 1937; Tell My Horse, in 1938; Moses, Man of the Mountain, in 1939.  In 1942, Dust Tracks on a Road, was published and Miss Zora was getting some recognition for her brilliant works of art. Also in 1942,  Hurston  was profiled in Who’s Who in AmericaCurrent Biography and Twentieth Century Authors. In 1948, Miss Zora published another novel, Seraph on the Suwanee.

Miss Zora wrote many thought-provoking articles during the 1950’s that spoke to her outlook and insight on the plight and experience of the American Negro. After she had stroke in 1959, Miss Zora and was forced to live in a welfare home in St. Lucie and sadly died a year later. Unable to be properly laid to rest, Miss Zora was buried in an unmarked grave in the Garden of Heavenly Rest, in Fort Pierce, Florida. In the early ’70’s author Alice Walker gave this great lady, Miss Zora Neale Hurston back her dignity back by properly marking her burial site.

Today we salute your life, your living and your amazing legacy, Happy birthday Miss Zora!

Merry 2014! We have arrived at that season when everyone becomes reflective and introspective about their life and making resolutions to change. It is a New Year and people are excited to have a new beginning for their lives. Some people want to start a business, write a book, go back to school, start a new career, find a mate, get married, have a baby, start saving money and the list goes on and on.

One of the biggest things that many people resolve to do is lose weight and get in shape. The struggle to shed pounds is a major issue that torments and is a constant battle. Losing weight and embracing the notion of getting in shape is one of my crosses to bear. Back  in November, I heard from two different doctors that I needed to lose the “muffin top“.  This was not a surprise to me, I was carrying the pounds around and needed to get a plan for  dropping the weight and getting in shape.

At first, I was mad at myself because over the summer I took a leap of faith and participated in the popular the Daniel Fast”—that involved eating only fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for 21 days along with other members of my church. I lost 10 pounds and I felt better and it  was a healthy way to eat better, lose weight and get in shape. All of my efforts went out the window as I traded my fruits, veggies and smoothies for greasy junk and sweet treats. The weight came back with a vengeance.

A friend saw my distress and decided that we could get up and start walking in the mornings or evenings to get moving and leave the weight behind. So the week before Thanksgiving we met in the wee hours of the morning and began walking on the road to changing and losing weight. It is never easy to get your body in shape, you have to do the work to  gain maximum results. My friend has been a great source of encouragement and inspiration, she has me jogging and walking.

We set a few goals: Walk/jog three times or more a week. We would go for an hour and we wanted to get up to 4 miles. Our weight loss goal is 15 pounds by Thursday,February 27th (the return of our favorite show SCANDAL). I am have not been boiling over about  jogging and I give my friend the”side eye” when I want to quit, then I remember no pain, no gain! I will not be defeated, this is my season for favor and blessings.

As I walk/jog into this new beginning it helped me to develop my updated tagline “Fit and Lean in 2014! Mind, Body, and Spirit”. I vow to get in shape this year and stay on a track with a lifestyle improvement.  As I get in shape it has to be a total effort of my Mind (it is where everything starts in our thinking), Body ( our temple has to be honored and kept in order), Spirit ( our soul must be in agreement with the body and mind for optimum results).

Let me encourage you to join me as I get “Fit and Lean in 2014! Mind,Body, Spirit”.

2013 YoTrip-Words and Thoughts In Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,500 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 25 trips to carry that many people.
