YoTrip-Words and Thoughts 2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner can carry about 250 passengers. This blog was viewed about 1,500 times in 2012. If it were a Dreamliner, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Kwanzaa– A Cultural Celebration

Kwanzaa is an African American cultural holiday. The name comes from Swahili “mutanda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits”.

First fruits celebrations originate from ancient Egypt and Nubia. They were the inspiration for the modern version of Kwanzaa founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, a time of African-Americans‘ struggle for civil rights.

Kwanzaa is occurs between Dec 26 and Jan 1, honouring human dignity, community, culture and people’s relationship with the environment. Respect is paid to the ancestors and new commitments to one’s community are taken on. Each day of the festival focuses on a different one of seven values including Umoja (Unity), Kujichaguilia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

During the festival homes, churches and places for communal gathering are decorated in black, red and green signifying future and hope. On Dec 31 a big feast (Karamu) takes place which is usually a product of joint communal effort. http://bit.ly/Ttaq7D

YoTrip-Words and Thoughts Guest Post- “Un-desensitized In The Aftermath” by Katandra Shanel Jackson

Today I yield my time and space  to a talented mother, entrepreneur, writer, poet, author, editor and  publisher…Katandra “Kat” Shanel Jackson. Like millions of others,  “Kat” was moved to express her feelings about the tragic incident from last Friday, December 14, 2012.

A dedication poem to the children of Sandy Hook Elementary, Newtown Connecticut & every child that has lost their life to such tragic acts…

  Un-desensitized In The Aftermath

We are unmoved. The pain doesn’t physically ‘touch’ us. So much violence. We’ve become immune to gunshots and bloodshed. As a mother, im concerned that I have not wept at the loss of so many young, innocent, beautiful lives. So I close my eyes and imagine the surprise on each little face. The gun cocked and loaded and the crimson embracing the place where each lifeless child now lay. The last beat of each heart. The blood no longer warm in their veins. The lost parents and lonely pets. Too many confused siblings, family members and friends. A lessened decibel in each home, one less cry, two less shoes to tie, no longer a need to explain why grandparents die. The empty setting, how many unfixed plates. Abandoned dolls, teddy bears, jump ropes and skates. And I pray as the pain at the loss of another’s child touches me, physically, and I allow these tears to flow freely.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for December 13, 2012-A Season of Memories (Vol.12, Iss.1)

A Season of Memories

Ruth Anderson, my beloved grandmother left this world for her heavenly home when I was still a young one (just eight years old). My brief time with my grandma was filled with experiences that left lasting impressions on my life. During the fall/winter months, grandma would love to take her beloved grandchildren along for one of her favorite past-times: picking pecans.

In Augusta, Georgia as the leaves found their way off the trees, the grounds would become littered with the dusty brown colored shells with black lines holding the treasured nuts known as pecans. I can still hear the rusting sound as the marriage of the leaves, pecan shells, and shoes all coming together as we walked through the orchards that seemed larger than life. Armed with our brown bags, neatly folder under our arms, we opened the bag and watched grandma for instructions on how which pecans were ready to be picked.

My grandma was expert in finding pecans at their prime and she would feel her brown bag quickly. The pecans we picked would soon turn into the main ingredients in Pecan pies or toasted and rolled with sugar and spice for a wonderful holiday treat.

Do you have any childhood memories of this season? Please feel free to share. It makes my heart smile to think of days and times gone by, how about you?
