May is National Stroke Awareness Month. African-Americans be aware of this silent killer in the community
Strokes are not a respecter of any persons color, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation it strikes without warning. In the African-Americans community, the numbers are staggeringly higher than other groups. Know the signs and symptoms to help prevent strokes. You must be your best advocate.
- Blacks have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes compared to whites.
- Blacks have higher death rates for stroke compared to whites.
- Among non-Hispanic blacks age 20 and older, 62.9 percent of men and 77.2 percent of women are overweight or obese.
