Imparting Knowledge To The Youth Teach-in 2013

On Wednesday I volunteered my talent and time to the lively and spirited students of Memorial Middle School in the heart of Orlando, Florida for #Teach-In 2013. It is always fun to  spend time with young people who are bright-eyed, eager,  and at that wonderful age of discovery. For the last 10 years I have participated in Teach-In and I learn something new each time I step on a campus.

I was honored to stand in the Memorial Middle gym and greet the 6th,7th and 8th graders for the Career Fair. The students were fun and funny. “What do you do?” ,”How much money do you make?”, “Did you go to college? “,”Can I have some of your candy?” If I answered these questions once , I answered them a few hundred times.

While imparting knowledge to the youth, I tell them that it is important to get an education and that learning is earning! I stress that they can be whatever they see themselves being because it is possible! Many of the young men have dreams of playing professional sports and the young ladies wanted to be nurses and fashion designers. We talked about studying the career to see if it was really for them. Other students wanted to go into law enforcement, the military, become lawyers or doctors. I took the opportunity to talk about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) all critical components for many career paths and students need to understand that early.

The young people are our future and our legacy, I want to make sure I am doing my part to put my footprints of impressions on them every opportunity I get!

Paper, The True Fabric Of My Life

DAILY PROMPT: Your life without a computer — what does it look like?

I have stacks and stacks of journals. I'll change the names if I ever decide to publish them. - Carolyn Murphyhttp://izquotes.com/quote/132915

If I had no access to a computer then I would use the old tried and true standard PAPER!  There is nothing better than the feel of a pen placing a kiss on the cheeks of paper with each and every stroke of the pen.

Even  now as I click and click on the keys on this laptop it will never be able to compete with writing “longhand” in the journals, diary, or the scrap paper laying around. I do desire to lay my words and thoughts down on lined sheets or the blank pages of a book. http://www.my-diary.org/

I can recall last year when technology failed me (my internet connection) was down and I was going a bit cra-cra (crazy). I could not connect at an instant with friends and followers. I was unable to quickly share what was doing, feeling, or thinking.

My Mom told me to calm down it was the Lord’s way of getting my attention, by taking my plastic and metal. I did not want to slow down, I wanted the microwave magic of having information at my fingertips…refresh, send, and update.

My tagline speaks volumes to how I feel about PAPER: “Words the joyful noise of my mouth, sweet sounds to my ears. The results of a love affair between pen and paper, words” YoTrip

Computers and technology are a nice convenience to have but can they really compete with pen and paper, I say absolutely not!  When I get in my quite mode and I want to really think and reflect give me PAPER, The True Fabric  Of My Life!

NaBloPoMo November Prompts

November 14: Are you a morning person or a night owl?

DAILY PROMPT: Is six in the morning the best hour of the day or too close to your three a.m. bedtime?

I must admit that I am both a morning person and a night owl. I can do six in the morning and I can do three a.m. as a bedtime.

Time is of the essence, it is happening even as I put my thoughts down on this page.

Time is constant, it has been here since the beginning and it will be here when it all comes to an end

Now me and time are in a love hate relationship…It gives and I take daily

I have been a morning person for 34 years since my brother  (William Boo-Boo Johnson) Henry Clay Jr., decided to enter into this world.

After my brother  Boo-Boo Johnson was born I became an early riser and a night owl because he was in both worlds. The baby boy had a round

the clock schedule! For whatever reason the baby boy schedule stuck on me.

I love six in the morning as it is my time of studying the word, praying and worshipping the Lord God.

I get inspiration and encouragement in the early morning hours as well as in the last night a.m.

Being an around the clock person gives me  little time to rest my body and spirit.

Somehow I need to find a way to recharge, I guess I have to spend more time in the middle.

Let me go to bed and see if I can make it work, especially since it is time to rise again!

The Five “S” Items In The Fridge

The Silk, the salsa, the seed, the sip, and soothers

Current Contents of Refrigerator

Current Contents of Refrigerator (Photo credit: NatalieMaynor)

Nov 12: Name five things inside your refrigerator right now and how you feel about them.

I went to the refrigerator and grab the first five things  and here is my combination I call The Silk for the Pure Almond milk I came to love when I decided I needed to try some milk alternatives. I love this as it was an acquired taste that works for the mature palette I now call my own. The salsa for the corn salsa that always comes to my rescue for “YoTrip’s favorite snacks” to go right along with the baked blue chips. The seed is a new grain in my world that I add to oatmeal, smoothies, and anything to help the fiber intake. The sip is that emergency bottle of Riesling when I just need to “wind down” always on chill and ready. The soothers are my great multivitamins of the “gummy bear” variety, help me get the extra’s I need to work on making my “health my wealth”.  The five “S” items are good on their own,  I really would not recommend them as a combo pack! Everything in the fridge has a face, a place, and a space inside the icebox.

It’s All In A Name

I was excited to read the BlogHer NaBloPoMo Prompt from yesterday: Are you named after someone or something? Are there any stories or associations attached to it?

I saw this as a great opportunity to tell the world about my connection to my namesake, the late Yolanda Denise King. If you are not familiar with the name Yolanda Denise King, she is the first-born daughter of Civil Rights icon, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and his wife Coretta Scott King. An actress, activist, and ambassador for health disparities in the black community, Yolanda Denise King walked in her own way to uphold the legacy of her father. I was so proud of Yolanda Denise King, because it was a major thing for me to share her name!

As I prepared to write this post, I shared with my Mom that I was glad they named me after Yolanda Denise King. Mom chuckled and replied, “You were not named after Yolanda King. Your name was supposed to be Casey, because your Daddy liked that name.” Casey Clay was almost my name until my Mom took to studying the baby names book and they decided on Yolanda Denise Clay. All this time I feed into my own dream about the origin of my name. Now I realize that, It’s All In A Name.

I did a Google search on my name and  one of the entries from the site SheKnows.com that gave me a detail on my name, Yolanda. I read it to my Mom and she was like, “I could not have named you better. It is dead on and so you!”

Check it out! Is it speaking of the Yolanda Denise Clay Triplett that you know?

HAIRversations with YoTrip

YoTrip ThinkingYes It Is Really Me

YoCurlyTripCurlyYo!

Last Friday, I decided to take my crown and glory in another direction. I am now calling myself CurlyYo! I am no longer rockin the long/short hairdo, I am now looking curly new!  A change in my style has caused me to have some HAIRversations in the most unlikely places and spaces.  Yes I said, HAIRversations, it is the talk that women of color (black and sometimes brown) usually find themselves engrossed in after the transition  in their hair style.

The  HAIRversations with YoTrip have been with of all people the white men in my world. Yes they have sized up, walking around me like a merry-go-round. A few of them  walked on by, because they did not recognize me.  Then two of them were bold and bad enough to TOUCH it because they must be from Missouri (the show me state). As soon as the one guy pulled his hand away he quickly offered “I already know, you ain’t suppose to touch a black woman’s hair!”  I was laughing and responded, “How did you know?” He said, I watched Chris Rock  in that movie

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/53/Good_hair_poster.jpg

I smiled and then they offered insight on my Curly locks. “Do you slap one of those doo-rags on your head at night and sleep with your head hanging out the bed?” I laughed and said, “No, I sleep however I feel, no special positions for me! You touched it, didn’t you see how soft it feels?”  I know they were shocked with my candid HAIRversations with them, but if you don’t share how can you expect people to be educated. One of the guys said, “Yo, I really like it and I think it looks good on you! That is more hair than I have had in all my life. ” Smiling at these guys, I told them that, “I am glad to have  had this talk with you so, now you know more about a sistas hair.”

Have you ever had to have the HAIRversations? How did it go for you? Was it a teachable moment for all involved? HAIRversations will always take place as long as transitions happen in our HAIR world! shouts out to the best stylist on the planet, Suzette A. Fullerton of  A True You Salon in Ocoee, Florida.

Wonder Woman Speaks Out!

Wonder Woman vs. Wonder Woman (129/365)

Wonder Woman vs. Wonder Woman (129/365) (Photo credit: JD Hancock)

If I sat down with my beloved Wonder Woman and conversed I would want to know a few things:

What made her think she could do it all? Wonder Woman was from the Amazon and possesses super-human powers:

Why did she set me up to think I could do it all?

  • Won heroine fighting for justice, love, peace, and sexual equality has also led to Wonder Woman being widely considered a feminist icon

What made her think that jumping into a headband, cape, belt, bathing suit and go-go boots for five minutes could be how you save the world and solve problems?

What would the Wonder Woman of the ’70’s say to the modern-day Wonder Woman?

Does she see Wonder Woman as a game changer?

Wonder Woman thanks for reminding me why you were one of my favorite characters to watch and read about as a child. I am also glad that as an adult I can appreciate this fictional person Wonder Woman,  who changed the game and paved the way for other female sheroes!

Daily Prompt: It Builds Character

Tell us about a favorite character from film, theater, or literature, with whom you’d like to have a heart-to-heart. What would you talk about?

The picture speak volume to who Wonder Woman was to a kid growing up in the ’70’s.  Loved to watch this show every week as this crime-fighting woman held her own against the bad guys. A true transformer, Wonder Woman would go from a mild-mannered government worker to this super heroine that help save the world in the course of 44 minutes.

The persona of Wonder Woman is clothed in the colors of these United States, she is a champion for justice. Gifted with super powers that help her elevate about the everyday person, Wonder Woman ruled and reigned as one of the few superheroes that were female. In the eyes of a young girl growing up in Augusta, Georgia, Wonder Woman was larger than life and could get it all done with ease.

If I sat down with my beloved Wonder Woman and conversed I would want to know a few things:

What made her think she could do it all?

Why did she set me up to think I could do it all?

What made her think that jumping into a headband, cape, belt, bathing suit and go-go boots for five minutes could be how you save the world and solve problems?

What would the Wonder Woman of the ’70’s say to the modern-day Wonder Woman?

Does she see Wonder Woman as a game changer?

Wonder Woman responds in the next post…

Know Who You Are…Black Girls Rock!

BlackGirlsRock, Inc.

I believe it is important to affirm who you are: Believer in Jesus Christ, black woman, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, sister-in-law, Godmother, and friend. Georgia born and raised, Florida resident, public administrator, college graduate, homeowner, information junkie, and foodie for life. These affirmation are just a few of the pieces of me!

This evening I proudly watched a spirited celebration of black women and girls via The Black Girls Rock  (BGR)Awards show.  As a salute to the role and work that black women and girls do in their communities or as celebrities, BGR shines a positive light on its honorees. The event continues to be a historic and monumental show highlighting the accomplishments of exceptional women of color who have made outstanding contributions in their careers, and who stand as inspirational and positive role models in their communities. http://www.bet.com/shows/black-girls-rock/about.html
