It is still relevant enough to send this blog out again and share information on Breast Cancer Awareness
AWARENESS SPREADS KNOWLEDGE

For over 25 years the month of October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness month. During the 31 days of October emphasis is focused on the importance of education, empowerment, and encouragement for breast health. The color pink and banded ribbons are the symbols of Breast Cancer awareness and are seen everywhere. Breast Cancer is a disease that does not discriminate by race, sex, national origin, living conditions, or income levels. The disease of Breast Cancer makes its presence known in the manner of solely invading the breast and surrounding tissue or spreading from the breast to other parts of the body. The preventative and prescriptive use of mammograms  and sonagrams as methods of detection of Breast Cancer have been a saving grace for countless women. Breast Cancer is a disease of many types and stages, there is not a one-size-fits all formula.

One type of Breast Cancer that has been deemed the “silent killer” is Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). IBC is a rare type of Breast Cancer but its potential consequences deems it worthy of no longer remaining silent in order to save lives. Please read the information contained below on IBC and share it with others.

Inflammatory breast cancer and common treatments (Source: NCI)Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare but very aggressive type of breast cancer in which the cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast. This type of breast cancer is called “inflammatory” because the breast often looks swollen and red, or “inflamed.” IBC accounts for 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancer cases in the United States.Symptoms
Inflammatory breast cancer often does not include a distinct lump in the breast, so it is important to be aware of the symptoms, which may include:

  • Skin of the breast appearing red, pink, reddish purple, or bruised
  • Skin having ridges or appearing pitted, like the skin of an orange (called peau d’orange)
  • Swelling, warmth, heaviness, burning, aching and/or tenderness
  • Increase in breast size
  • A nipple that is inverted (facing inward)

These symptoms usually develop quickly, over a period of weeks or months. Swollen lymph nodes may also be present under the arm, above the collarbone, or in both places. However, it is important to note that these symptoms may also be signs of other conditions such as infection, injury, or other types of cancer.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of IBC is based primarily on the results of a doctor’s clinical examination. Biopsy, mammogram, and breast ultrasound are used to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment
Treatment consisting of chemotherapy, targeted therapy, surgery, radiation therapy and hormonal therapy is used to treat IBC:

  • Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy (anticancer drugs) is generally the first treatment for patients with IBC, and is called neoadjuvant therapy. The purpose of chemotherapy is to control or kill cancer cells, including those that may have spread to other parts of the body.
  • Surgery and Radiation Therapy – After chemotherapy, patients with IBC may undergo surgery and radiation therapy to the chest wall. Both radiation and surgery are local treatments that affect only cells in the tumor and the immediately surrounding area. The purpose of surgery is to remove the tumor from the body, while the purpose of radiation therapy is to destroy remaining cancer cells. Surgery to remove the breast (or as much of the breast tissue as possible) is called a mastectomy. Lymph node dissection (removal of the lymph nodes in the underarm area for examination under a microscope) is also done during this surgery.
  • Additional Treatments: Chemotherapy, Hormonal Therapy, Targeted Therapy – After initial systemic and local treatment, patients with IBC may receive additional systemic treatments to reduce the risk of recurrence (cancer coming back). Such treatments may include additional chemotherapy, hormonal therapy (treatment that interferes with the effects of the female hormone estrogen, which can promote the growth of breast cancer cells), targeted therapy (such as trastuzumab, also known as Herceptin®), or all three. Trastuzumab is administered to patients whose tumors overexpress the HER-2 tumor protein.

Patients may also receive supportive care to help manage the side effects of the cancer and its treatment.

Breast Cancer Awareness month helps spread the word to all who will listen about this disease. No one is exempt from being touched by Breast Cancer either personally or by a family member, friend, neighbor or co-worker. This is a fight everyone has an opportunity to participate in and help educate and save the lives of others.

Thursday Thinking for October 14, 2010-Are you in a HOLE that is HOLDing you hostage?

A miner measures mine minerals

Image via Wikipedia

hole

noun, verb, holed, hol·ing.

–noun 1. an opening through something; gap; aperture: a hole in the roof; a hole in my sock.

2. a hollow place in a solid body or mass; a cavity: a hole in the ground.

3. the excavated habitation of an animal; burrow.
4. a small, dingy, or shabby place: I couldn’t live in a hole like that.
5. a place of solitary confinement; dungeon. 6. an embarrassing position or predicament: to find oneself in a hole.  http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hole

Are you in a HOLE that is HOLDing you hostage?

The recent rescue of the 33 Chilean miners from a HOLE in the San Jose gold and copper mines, grabbed the attention of everyone on the planet. For 69 days these courageous men (the youngest is 19 and the oldest is 63) stayed trapped in the confines of an opening, a gap, a hollowed cavity…a HOLE. It is unbelievable, unimaginable, and unthinkable to be suddenly “buried alive”. Surely not one of these men left their homes and expected to be stuck in a HOLE. The families, the friends, the people of Chile gathered and waited from August 5th until August 22nd to realize all 33 men were alive and able to communicate with the outside world. These 33 men had to react to the conditions, render care to each other, and remain close.  The 33 Chilean miners had to put their trust in each other for their survival in a HOLE. Everything that these men knew, loved, and desired were suddenly miles away from them. The miners were told that help was on the way, but it would be slow..their rescue was expected no sooner than Christmas. No only were the miners struck in a HOLE, full of dust from the stone, they relying on each other, and uncertain of when someone would  come to their rescue. A HOLE that these miners arrived at on August 5th for a regular day of work  was now HOLDing them hostage. The miners had to make a decision: Are they in a HOLE that is HOLDing them hostage?    As days turned into weeks, and the weeks to months the 33 miners remained resolved that the HOLE was HOLDing them, not as hostages but for the help that was on the way. Trust was coupled with faith, as the 33 miners believed the stay in the HOLE was temporary. The miners stayed strong and worked along with the rescuers on the surface by preparing to leave the HOLE. Rescuers were motivated by the 33 miners and their resilient measures, which helped the speed  up the methods for drilling down into the HOLE for access. Christmas came early for the 33 miners on Tuesday, October 12th. The world watched in amazement as the rescue team successfully lifted the first Chilean miner out of the HOLE. For the next two days the rescuers would slowly drop a cylinder into the earth to remove the 33 miners out of the HOLE and release them back into the real world. The HOLE that was HOLDing the miners was insulating them from the media frenzy and the normal lives they left 69 days ago. Makes you wonder if these 33 miners will ever be able to get away from the HOLE that was HOLDing them hostage. The next time you seek to complain about life and journey you are on, think of these 33 miner miracles and how they keep the faith and trusted the rescuers to remove them  from the HOLE that was HOLDing them hostage.~~YoTrip
