Happy OC Anniversary

July 28, 1998 found me embarking on a new journey to add to my colorful and varied resume, as I spent the day in orientation in a room full of newbies. On this day thirteen years ago, I became an employee of Orange County Government (OCG) within the Growth Management and Environmental Services Division and the Building Department. I know that was a great deal to write and even more of a mouthful to say. I was so glad when the department became Growth Management and we became Building Division and then The Division of Building Safety.

I was hired as a Permit Analyst with the Building Department. My job back then was to assist people who visited our offices for permitting services. I started  out with four other people who were also Permit Analyst. I also started out with a young lady who worked in the communications Department and is still there today.

Working as a Permit Analyst gave me the foundation and training to understand the very basics of the Permitting services business. I worked as a Permit Analyst for fifteen months, as I had a desire to learn and do more within the department. I was promoted to Project Administrator, and was given the opportunity to expand my wings and grow in the business of helping people for the next two years. My next move was to become the Building Coordinator and for the next seven years I was responsible for directing traffic with Permit Analysts, Interns, and temporary workers. This position helped me become a better follower, leader, listener, coach and trainer.

For the last three and a half years, I have been a Program Development Supervisor for the Division of Building Safety (I know the name changed again!). My current position allows me to continue to work with assisting people who need permitting services. Additionally, I can use my advanced degree in Organizational Management to help advance our work in helping our community grow and prosper. I am so glad to watch the landscape of Orange County change before my eyes with building and construction projects.

I say thanks to all who I have worked with and for over the years.I have learned and lived so much in my endeavor to help people realize their dreams. I am happy to say that after 13 years, 3 major hurricanes, record-breaking highs and lows in the building business, I am looking forward with anticipation and expectancy for what the coming years will bring. Happy OCG Anniversary, time sure does fly!

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for July 26, 2011-TIME (Vol.4, Iss.3)

The Passage of Time

TIME

Definition of TIME

1 a: the measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition exists or continues : duration
b: a nonspatial continuum that is measured in terms of events which succeed one another from past through present to future
c: leisure <time for reading>
2 a: the point or period when something occurs : occasion
3 a: an appointed, fixed, or customary moment or hour for something to happen, begin, or end <arrived ahead of time>
b: an opportune or suitable moment <decided it was time to retire> —often used in the phrase about time <about time for a change>
b: a division of geologic chronology
c: conditions at present or at some specified period —usually used in plural <times are hard> <move with the times>
d: the present time <issues of the time>
Here are a few things to ponder that relate to the ever-present elements of TIME.
Time is ever present                  Time is perfect
Time does not wait                    Time is  constant
Time is on my side                    Time is at hand
Time is patiently waiting       Time flies
Time goes by quickly              Time never ends
Time is the essence of life      Time is winding up
Time comes and goes            Time moves slowly
Time out                                  Time to go

Have you ever taken the TIME to really think about TIME? Or do you just use TIME without even given it a second thought. We take TIME for granted because we just expect it to be here for us. In reality we are on borrowed TIME, we alloted moments, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years for our use. In our allotment of TIME we have no idea how long these increments will last, we are really operating on a moment by moment basis. Yet so often we tell people “I am taking it day by day”, with the hope that will make it through twenty-four hours. The lesson in this TIME exploration is that we need to pay more attention to TIME because our TIME can expire at any TIME.

Consider giving TIME a little more of your TIME, even when you do not think you have TIME for this exercise. When we take TIME and make TIME, we will surprise ourselves at what TIME really means in our lives. TIME can make the difference and TIME can be the difference. TIME can be wasted or TIME can be used as a resource. TIME adds to our lives, TIME subtracts from our lives,TIME divides in our lives, and TIME multiplies in our lives, this the beauty of TIME.

What TIME is it? TIME to pause and give TIME some TIME, before TIME decides to stop working on your behalf. TIME out for ignoring TIME, it deserves your respect. So join me as I give TIME it’s props for always showing up for me and making TIME even when I do not make TIME!

It has been a week, and I need to report how I exercised my four L’s-Live, Laugh, Love, Learn.

I continually try to make living better a priority.
Life is all about how we choose to live it. There were times this week that made life matter so much more. Everyday we have to live a cherished life.

Laugh when you feel like crying.
Find a reason to laugh at something in your life. On several ocassions I just let out a big old gut-felt laugh at myself or something happening around me.

Love is the answer to all things wrong in the world.

It is all about love and love covers so many things. My heart was open to love people even when it did not make sense. Exercising love takes work, patience and understanding.

Learn is a concept that should be a constant for people.

I took the time to learn something new by merely being my ever-wanting-t

The more I keep hearing these four words, the more I realize how important they should be in our daily activity. In this world that is pushing us, pulling us, patting us up and down we all can take some time of personal insight and LIVE more, LAUGH more, LOVE more, and LEARN more! I am vowing to incorporate these four L’s into my way of existing.
Often we search for a complex solutions, when we just need to see the resolve in the simple things. As I sat and looked at the eight things, I see them as interchangeable in any of the four areas. Let me challenge you: For the next week make it your focus to find ways to LIVE better, LAUGH better, LOVE better, and LEARN better. Record how you were able to accomplish these things and if you think it will help someone do not be afraid to share (knowledge is power!).
I am getting excited and I am looking forward to some great results. So start now the four L’s are waiting on you…

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for July 7, 2011- A Real Lady in the Courtroom (Vol.7, Iss.1)

American jurist Sandra Day O'Connor (b. 1930),...

A Real Lady in the Courtroom

It is a sad commentary that the world stage has become glued to IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF
THE NINTH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT, IN AND FOR ORANGE COUNTY, FLORIDA CRIMINAL JUSTICE
DIVISION.STATE OF FLORIDA, In the Orange County Court House Courtroom 23A Orlando, Florida 32801 for the last 48 days.

I am still not ready to offer any extensive or expressions on this tragic case, so today I choose to take this edition of Thursday Thinking by YoTrip to a different place of significance for July 7th.

I would like to focus on A Real Lady in theCourtroom, who 30 years ago (July 7, 1981) became a first at the highest judicial level. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was nominated by President Ronald Regan to be the first woman to sit on United States Supreme Court. From her nomination, (a groundbreaking move) to her joining the other men on the high court, Associate Justice O’Connor changed the look and the feel of the elite judicial group. President Regan had to adhere to both a campaign pledge and the emerging feminist, who were gaining a voice and a voting bloc in his nomination of Judge Sandra Day O’Connor.

Sandra Day O’Connor, the woman who would go on to become commissioned and nominated as a Supreme Court Associate in September of
1981, was not a mere front person for the feminist movement. She received her bachelor’s and law degrees from Stanford University. She served as deputy
county attorney of San Mateo County, Calif., from 1952 to 1953 and as a civilian attorney for Quartermaster Market Center, Frankfurt,Germany, from 1954 to 1957. From 1958 to 1960, she practiced law in Maryvale, Ariz., and served as assistant attorney general of Arizona from 1965 to 1969.She was appointed to the Arizona State Senate in 1969 and was subsequently re-elected to two two-year terms. In 1975, she was elected judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court and served until 1979, when she was appointed to the Arizona Court of Appeals. www.abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=899446

Even with this impressive resume of knowledge and experience Associate Justice O’Connor found that she had to breakthrough  and keep on proving her worth as a brilliant judge who just happened to be a woman. After a few years on the court,Justice O’Connor took the time to respond to being overlooked as a member of
the SCOTUS (Supreme Court Of The United States), which was described as “nine old men “of the court.  The Justice with wit and humor let the editorial writer and readers know she is the FWOTSC (First Woman On The Supreme Court).Sandra D. O’Connor, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, October 12, 1983, “HighCourt’s ‘9 Men’ Were a Surprise to One”, The New York Times, October 5, 1983 re: (First Woman On The Supreme Court); William
Safire
, “On Language; Potus and Flotus”, The New York Times, October 12, 1997.  Retrieved December 7, 2007Over the 23 years, prior to her retirement that Associate Justice O’Connor sat on the bench, she became known as the “swing vote” that joins with the conservative side of the court. Her voting record has been solid and controversial from upholding the tenets of Roe v. Wade and Abortion, Affirmative Action, and Terrorism. During the contentious Presidential elections of 2000, between George W. Bush and Al Gore Jr., Justice O’Connor became the deciding vote that sealed the history books and the endless counting of ballots here in the State of Florida.

Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor entered the courtroom as the first woman justice and set the course for the subsequent entries of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 1993 and Elena Kagan in 2010. Today I salute Associate Justice O’Connor’s place in history, as the First Woman On The Supreme Court and call her “A Real Lady in the Courtroom”, for her poise, her presence and her purpose in the judicial system.

My Silence Speaks Volumes

There are times when it is best to follow the rules of thinking before speaking. The world has been in a place of pause for the last 46 days as we watched intently or from a distance the Capital Murder trial for Casey Marie Anthony in the senseless death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.  Today a jury of 12 people found Casey “not guilty” of the murder charge and child neglect or abuse. The raw emotions of the verdict and all of the opinions of the sideline attorney’s (myself included) leads me to not offer up my mixture of emotions on this subject.

At this point I am going to say that the lost of Caylee Marie Anthony is greater than any victory of justice that was felt by the defense team of Casey Marie Anthony. Until I can say more I am simply choosing to let MY SILENCE SPEAK VOLUMES!

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for June 30,2011-The Journey is all a Pursuit to the Destination (Vol.6, Iss.3)

Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're ...

The Journey is all a Pursuit to the Destination

“You never know where the day will take you. The path is different, the journey is all a pursuit to the destination.#teamgetthere” ~~YoTrip

Each day comes to us wrapped in a package that says, “Open if you seek to take the journey in pursuit to the destination.” The wraping on the package is different each day because every day is different in what it has to offer those that diligently seek to take the journey in pursuit of the destination. Too often we formulate in our minds what we want from the day, how we want the day, when we will do things in the day, where we will do things in the day, why we will do things in the day, and how we will do things in the day. As we find ourselves chasing those 24 hours away, we have to focus on the path, on the journey, and pursuit to the destination.

In 1975 the musical icon, Diana Ross sang a song, “Do You Know Where You Are Going To”  the theme song from the movie Mahogany in which Ross  starred opposite, the debonaire Billy Dee Williams. The lyrics in the first stanza of this song are a series of pointed questions about a journey. In life, our journey is full of  questions that we are in constantly trying to find the answers. As long as we stay on the path, we are destined to go places. Some places will lead us to things we do not fully understand and other places we give us a greater understanding of things in our mist, there is a lesson to be learned in all of the journey’s we pursuit to reach our destination.

On a day when we  have the best made plans we can be taken in another direction, so we must be open to moving forward, to keep moving along. All to often things workout better than we plan, because we choose to grab hold of the journey and pursue the destination set before us. Decide to take the plunge and find path that leads to the journey, then begin to ask yourself the questions and feel free to go forth and find the answers. Remember, the journey is all a pursuit to the destination.

Do you know where you’re going to?
Do you like the things that life is
showing you?
Where are you going to? do you know?
Do you get what you’re
hoping for?
When you look behind you there’s no open door
What are you
hoping for?
Do you know?

Once we were standing still in
time
Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds
You knew i loved you, but
my spirit was free
Laughing at the question that you once ask me

Do
you know where you’re going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing
you?
Where are you going to? do you know?

Now, looking back in all we
pass
We’ve let so many dreams just slip through our hands
Why must we wait
so long before we see
How sad the answers to those questions can
be?

Do you know where you’re going to?
Do you like the things that
life is showing you?
Where are you going to? do you know?
Do you get what
you’re hoping for?
When you look behind you there’s no open door
What are
you hoping for? do you know?
