Pecan Memories

A walk in the orchards

From times past

My grandma would gather us grands

Three, five, or seven of us in a row

Walking along to her favorite spot

Cool crisp air we can feel it

Leaves crunching under foot

A bag in each helpers hand

We are on a mission

Find those pecans

Mom and I took a walk today

In a place called Serenity

We felt an air of familiar

The leaves crunched under our feet

Bags in our hands

A mission we were on it

Find those pecans

And we did!

I could feel the spirit of grandma

Moving in us, walking with us

In our hands, were her hands

The beloved pecan

Brought back so many memories!

A Brand New Kinda Me

New Year Happy! We have crossed the bridge from 2015 and into (#The16) as
I affectionately call this year! I am glad to be here in the land of the living as I saw so many transition from life to death last year. Bring on a new year and some positive living!

Well it is a new year and it brings the pressure of people struggling to make and not break resolutions. You know the drill of classics: lose weight/diet, go to the gym/workout, be more healthy/eat right, save money/stay on budget, quit smoking/get a patch, quit drinking/find substitutes, get organized/remove clutter and the list goes on and on! Many people find themselves “resolutions cycle” working hard but going nowhere fast or going to extremes to change habits only to fall short. Resolving to change should be gradual process to help you sustain the change.

In May of 2014, I started on a journey with my hair? See my stylist left town due to family issues. I was out sorts, my stylist was like family and took pride in using my crown as a show piece. My hair styles were always conversation pieces. I was able to maintain my style until July, but not ready for a new stylist. I just hopes she would return and get my mane in order.

In July, I moved from weaves to wigs. I had no idea of the big business of wigs. There are millions of styles, colors, lengths and such. What looks good on a wig head may do everything or nothing for you. It is work, until you find works for you. My biggest dilemma was trying to find a wig like the last look my stylist had hooked me up with. I never could find the Oprah curl pattern…

As I wore the wigs as a cover, I let the perm and chemicals grow out of my hair. What a process? It had been more years than I could recall for me to not have “creamy crack” perm, in my hair making the kinky curls straight. The transition back made me learn about natural hair and how to care for it. Having a bestie that is the epitome of a “Natural girl” helped me appreciate my hair.

I would wash, braid, or twist my hair and then cap my hair before putting on my wig to go out. Many would ask why be a “wiggy”, as they missed those cute styles I always rocked. The genius of my stylist was gone and I was finding my new wiggy styles to compensate.

On January 1, 2016 I decided the wig days had come to a close and I donned my hair in twists style for an annual New Years day gathering. There was much conversation about the new do! I had now fully joined #teamnatural. It is A Brand New Kinda Me… and I love it!  So stay with me and let’s where this affair goes…

Its The Ninth Month: I Gottagetblogging

image

The third Saturday in September finds hundreds of Florida bloggers and social media enthusiasts gathering for #FLBlogCon. The dazzing and world renowned campus of  Full Sail University is the back drop and host site for this event.

FLBlogCon, is the #blogchild (yes I just made it up) of founder Bess Auer, whose passion and tenacity for expression are interwoven into the fabric of this conference. Like Bess, this event is full of energy and empowerment for the blogging and social media newbie to the experts in various fields.

The Honorable Teresa Jacobs, Mayor of Orange County extended  greetings and the county’s support for the blogging and social media community. As a 16 year employee of Orange County government, it is good to know the Mayor embraces this medium and sees its relevance in the world today.

The CEO of IZEA, Ted Murphy was the opening keynote speaker. Ted was spirited and energetic in sharing the then, the now and what’s to come in the blogging and social media world.

My first session featured the tag team of Anthony Bencomo (Deli Fresh Threads) and Robin Draper (Authentic Florida) each of them shared ways to build your brand. My takeaways: Uncover your passion, find your niche, and become and an expert.

Sunshine J. Baker served up some great insight in the Bloggers & Brands: Maximize the Relationship session. As a bloggers you have to make the connection by giving good content, setting up your social media, consistently posting,  connecting with groups, attend events, and quick delivery of assignments.

Lunch was provided by Tijuana Flats and they made this foodies tummy happy. From tacos, to chips and salsa with rice and beans to boot the meal was tasty. The staff was friendly and helpful from start to finish!

At the opening session I met a really neat guy who told me the wonderful back story of how had a blog post of his took get a lot of hits from  Under the tile, “From Now On I’m Going To Be A  Dick to Everyone I Meet Online”, Marc Ensign wants the to change the world. After our conversation I believe in Marc and glad we connected. Very humble,  Marc never mentioned he was a panelist in one of the session for FLBlogCon14.

When it was time for taking a breather and relaxing, then I chilled in the Dairy Council of Florida Lounge. From wooden spoons ( one of the coolest tools) to info and cool ice cream treats, massages, professional headshots (love mine the most), coffee and teas, to social media content companies, it was a nice laid back spot.

Blogging as a Business; From Hobbyist to Professional  with Heather Lopez. This session offered  ways to make your blog turn a profit. Takeaways were that they are different methods for monetizing your blog, use sponsored post to tell a brand story, know what you can right off on your business.

Monetize your Blog was the last session I attended. Moderator Ben Reed lead the panel of speakers Crystal Duncan, Matthew Papa, and Brandon Yates as they discussed various ways to monetize your blog. From sponsored content, affiliate links, and various ad networks the panelist shared their experiences on what could work best for all types of blogs.

Eddie Selover was the closing keynote speaker as he shared the Pecha Kucha concept. Pecha Kucha is a presentation style with a format of 20 slides for 20 seconds each totalling 6 minutes and  40 seconds. This format makes the presentation quick and to the point with a flair for creativity.

Selover brought two dynamic presenters that were lively and kept the audience engaged as they shared a. This was a great thought-provoking ending to FLBlogCon14. As I left from the formal conference and transformed to the after party, I had a cupcake from Gigi’s I went over to the Ford display cars and took a few selfies. Looked to the sky and thought…IGottaGetBlogging!

Begin Again, Now Is Not Too Late

Our lives are filled with missed opportunities and times where we have come up short. While we want to be winners each and every time in our lives we must be able recognize that we have a couple of options: give up and quit or take the loss as a lesson and begin again!

Everyday is a new day, tomorrow comes…begin again

When things seem to all wrong, start over…begin again

One door closes on you…begin again

Everyone counts you out…begin again

You are told you should give up…begin again

They say you will never make it…begin again

Possible seems so impossible…begin again

The end is not within your sight…begin again

Game over is flashing on the screen of life…begin again

All the odds are against you…begin again

Starting over is the first step to…begin again

You will never know unless you try…begin again

You are a failure when you do not make an effort…begin again

It is hard and it hurts yet you must…begin again

You CAN is bigger that your can’t…begin again

When you believe in yourself you can…begin again

If you want to prove them wrong you have to…begin again

Let courage be your guide…begin again

Begin with the end already in mind…being again

Have no fear, just do it…begin again

You are destined to be a winner…begin again

Things Desired

Silence Broken, Words Spoken…Questions

Silence Broken, Words Spoken

When the silence is broken

What words will be spoken

Will it stop them in their tracks

Who will be made to react

Where will the words lead

How will it help them succeed?

What if the silence is shattered like glass?

Will the scattered pieces tell a story

Can you rise uncut in all your glory?

If  you puncture a vein will the spirit remain in tact or does the blood expose

Is it like the thorns from a rose?

What becomes of the bright red drops?

Will the bleeding pause or does it flow on and never stops?

Is like shedding light that dances across the sky?

Or is it like wings on eagles as birds that soar not just fly

What is this nature in all its wonders in perfect harmony?

Does it ever take rest and let the words just be?

Silently broken, words that are spoken and questions…posed.

“What’s Going On” A Poetic Tribute To Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye Page - Header image

What’s Going On?

What’s going on the question dear Marvin asked over forty decades ago

I sit here and ponder and can honestly can say do we really know

Mother’s are still crying so many tears of pain

Will they find a place of peace some sunshine after the rain

Our brothers they are dying  on foreign soils and lands called home

Some considered endangered species in the places that they roam

Fathers we call on you to not let wars rise up and elevate

In your hands are the keys to both peace and love to war and hate

People are protest marching  and carrying thought-provoking signs of the times

Seeking to make a difference and eagerly towing the lines.

So Marvin is asking and wondering  about what is going on in our world today

I believe he said it best when he offered that classic line

You know we’ve got to find a way

To bring some lovin’ here today

If  love is truly the answer  to all our ills and woes

Infusing it into the fabric of our lives is really how it  goes

Now that is what is going on…

Rest so peacefully Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr.  (Marvin Gaye)

It Been 20 Years…

This week marks the anniversary of my arrival in the land of Mickey (Orlando) from the land of Country Music (Nashville). It is funny how the time has passed  as I reflect back to that face, that place, that space of January 1994…

In the days to come I will recall, revisit and remember the journey from Nashville or shall I say Antioch, Tennessee to Orlando, Florida.

It seems like yesterday when I received the call from my husband (yes I was a “Mrs.” back then. Another post for another time) saying the company (Olive Garden/OG) had accepted the proposal we developed, was ready to move forward and move us to sunny Orlando, Florida.

I was a ball of emotions trying to take in the fact that we were leaving Nashville (a place that had grown to be home in my three years there) and heading southward to Orlando. This was it.

Before we moved the OG brought us down for a visit and to help with the transition. We stayed at the then Adams Mark Hotel which is attached to the Florida Mall. While my husband met with his new bosses, I hung out at the mall and planned for our upcoming moving date and looked at where I would work once we settled in to Orlando.

During our visit we were wined and dined with Presidents and Vice Presidents and other corporate big wigs.

Our time in Orlando was fun and full of relaxation. I arrived in Nashville in relation mode. Over the next month, I was in relocation mode. I had to be ready when the movers arrived.

This move was apart of our dream. All we had to do was be ready to go forward. It was still scary going to a new lands. A co-worker knew I loved by Dr. Maya Angelou so she gave me the book,” I Won’t Take Nothing For My Journey”, the title speaks volumes to where we were going.

On Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr weekend in January 1994 Tim, Snoopy (the dog) and I headed to Augusta, Georgia to see my family and friends and to rest.

After 20 years, I have had some ups and downs, some wins and some loss. I am here and still standing. I can truly say, The Best Is Yet To Come!

And It Went Tumbling Down…

The LG G2 the shattered face edition

The LG G2 the shattered face Edition

On Christmas eve I broke down and purchased a new cellphone. I was planning on getting a phone but when a friend could not get information off my old Samsung HTC because the cord was not connecting. I looked shocked yet I knew the end was past near, it was OVA! I was simply told, “Go get a phone!”

I was so excited to get the newest phone on the market, the LG G2! I am an Android Woman, so this phone fit the bill for my needs. Sleek, Solid, and Sound this LG G2 was  a great choice for a Smartphone. As the salesman spoke of all its bells and whistles, I read up on and 0 compared it to the Galaxy 4.  The salesman had his own LG G2 in his pocket, it fit perfectly and he did not mind flashing it at me to close the deal. After some 45 minutes, I was studying and contemplating, don’t judge the madness in my method!

In an effort to add on to the  sale of the phone, I was offered this contraption to hold the phone and protect it from all hurt, harm and danger. I politely declined. The case costed more than what I was paying at this point of sale, so I would go online to find a case and car charger.

I left the store and realized I did not even find out how to answer the phone. I needed to get home and pack for my trip to LA (lovely Augusta) for the holidays. I went home had  an enjoyable holiday and learned little about my new toy.

New Year’s Day, I decided to  stay the course of my commitment to keep my body moving  and went for a morning walk at Rose park. I had added the app to track my time and distance, on my new phone. I was so proud of  myself for going the distance and finishing the course. I went to do some stretching and cool down when that LG G2 decided to tumble out of my pocket.  The face of the screen had a diagonal  crack line that ran right to left. I was crushed and kicking myself for not getting that case.

Since it was a holiday, the stores were opened but I was directed to the insurance claim company for assistance. I have insurance so it could be replaced.once I went through the prompts on the phone  only to be sent to the website to make a claim. I was looking at 48 hours  or longer (due to the holiday) with no communication in quick access. How would I make it?

Well I was being tested for endurance. At first I thought I would go crazy. Well I survived, I got a new phone after 5 days! I struggled but I made it through! The tumble was my trying time, that turned in to my testimony of patience in the process. Yes I did get a case for covering  and protection.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 1,500 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 25 trips to carry that many people.
