Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for August 26, 2010-Losing To Gain (Possessions), Part 4 (Vol.3, Iss.4)

Stop worrying about what you have to lose and ...

Stop worrying about what you have to lose and start focusing on what you have to gain. (Photo credit: deeplifequotes)

Well here is another blog post I found on the drafting table. It seemed in perfect alignment with the fact that millions of people purchased lotto tickets with the hope of a chance to become an instant millionaire if they win the 636 million dollar mega lottery drawing!

Are you dreaming of becoming a millionaire? What are  15 (6+3+6 ) things you could do with that much money? Would you take a lump sum or installments?  How would your life change as a millionaire? Who would you bless with some of your winnings? Where would you travel, in the USA or beyond?

Tell me how you would answer the questions if you became the 636 million dollar man or woman!

Losing To Gain (Possessions), Part 4

Things, stuff, things, stuff and more things and more stuff. Houses, cars,
stocks, bonds, land, and businesses are just a few of the things and stuff that
people own. Lately, it is hard to find people who have not experienced the loss
of possessions. The current economic climate has heightened people’s awareness
of their things, their stuff, and their possessions. The loss of possessions is
the final installment in the series “Losing To Gain”. Losing possessions is an
area that is worth examining a little closer.

Everyone has something or multiple things which are near and dear to their
heart. Let’s face it, if you worked hard for that car, that house, or that
business your ownership is a serious matter. It has been said that anything you
work hard for is well worth fighting for,if the effort was made to obtain it,
then go the extra mile to retain it. Some would say that these days fighting for
your possessions is becoming a routine task. Many people find themselves in a
position of fighting to keep their things, their stuff, their possessions.

It is amazing how losing one thing or one possession has the ability to start a
cycle of loss. Pat and Paul Possessors are a married couple with two children in
private school, living in a home, with two cars and a mini-van. Pat is a Office
Administrator and Paul is a District Sales Manager and both have worked for
their companies for more than 10 years, with solid retirement plans in place.
The Possessors’ take vacations to destinations inside and outside of the
country, several times a year. Pat and Paul are also the owners of a
successful small real estate company. A year ago, Paul was laid off from his
job, the Possessors have seen their lives change drastically. The Possessors
summed up their loss in this way: one car was loss, the children’s private
school attendance was loss, the real estate business loss clients, but most
importantly the family loss a major income stream. The devastation of losing
possessions was difficult for the Possessors, yet they were determined to stay
positive. The possessions were important to the Possessors but they were not
their central focus.

The loss of stuff, things, or possessions should not only be viewed as the end,
but as a beginning. When loss of possessions occurs, the obvious questions of
why and how settle in waiting to find answers. Losing possessions should promote
the notion of living with less. Many people have been forced to not focus on the
things they have loss but to learn to live better with what they have left. So
if you have experienced a loss of possession recently and find yourself whining
and complaining about your things and your stuff, get OVER IT!

Life is far more precious than the POSSESSIONS you surround yourself with, like a
blanket of comfort. Take time and review  what you have loss and see the blessing in
having your life, your health and your family. Losing to Gain (Possessions) can
best be summed up by the comedic genius of George Carlin. In his stand-up
comedy performance, Mr. Carlin exposes how losing your stuff can easily send you
into a crazy state. *Mr. Carlin (R.I.P.) does use a few choice words in his
delivery but he makes you think about you and your stuff.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 12/2/2010-YOU CAN DO THIS! (Vol.7, Iss.1)

I happened to be reviewing my blog drafts and  this is one of the post that  found itself on blog room floor. I thought this was timely and relevant enough to share with to others. We are 20 days away from the start of 2014 and now is a great time to challenge yourself to get a goal or two and do your best to achieve them.
Who knew that #The100DaySmart Goal Challenge was welling up in me 3 year ago.  The best things in life take time… Your time is now! Make sure to let me know your progress.
YOU CAN DO THIS!
December is here and the year of 2010 is coming to a close. As you enter into the last month of the year, now is the time to decide on how to make a great exit. The game is still is going on for the next 30 days. Recognize that there is still time to enter into the game, if you have been sidelined. If you are in the game but have not scored, you still have time to make it happen. Stop right now and say to yourself: YOU CAN DO THIS! Speaking these four words into the atmosphere is a powerful self-affirmation. Let these next 30 days be the start to you meeting the smallest goal or making the biggest shot in your life!
goal

goal (Photo credit: Sean MacEntee)

Are you ready to challenge and stretch yourself to accomplish your goal?
Do you believe YOU CAN DO THIS?
What are your barriers to achieving your goal?
Are you willing to write down your goal(s)?
Are you willing to share your belief in YOU CAN DO THIS! with others?
Can you envision yourself achieving your goal?
What resources do you need to help you achieve your goal?
YOU CAN DO THIS! Keep telling yourself that you can make your goal a reality. If looking at 30 days is too overwhelming to you, then break the month down into weeks. Each week you can set a mini-goal for yourself, and continue to say YOU CAN DO THIS! One week will turn into two weeks and then you are working into three weeks and before you realize it you have come to four weeks. YOU CAN DO THIS!
December has come and will leave in another 30 days. Will you exit the month of December the same way you entered the month of December? YOU CAN DO THIS! Whatever your goal, your dream, or your desire is today, decided that this is a good day to take the steps to making it happen! YOU CAN DO THIS!

LFHred hand fold

Below is my sixth feature blog post in honor of Women’s History Month.  It is important that we celebrate the beauty and brains of women. Please enjoy learning about these fascinating women and then make sure you support them in their passions, projects, and products

Who are you? My name is Dr. Loretta Faith Harris, but I live by Faith. I am the second of five children to the parents of Meshach and Delrene Harris. My humble beginnings are in Pahokee “Muck city” Florida where I take pride and joy. There is a lot in a name and I believe that God divinely ordained my name. Faith foreshadowed my life’s encounters and experiences, which required COMPLETE and TOTAL Faith in God.

What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”? I believe that my genuine, transparent, and honest approach to share my life experiences make me a woman people should know. Life is everything but a fairy tale! When you have survived tragedy, adversity, and even experienced death, you adopt a new perspective towards life encounters. My experiences of overcoming death-defying odds and making it to my eventual triumph are chronicled in my award-winning memoir, “The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy into Triumph.” So, I say to anyone reading this blog, “Take the time” to get to know the true woman.

When I rise in the morning before my feet hit the ground I whisper, “Good morning Holy Spirit” because my Father and I are one. There is a reason I face my fears and skydive, rock climb, and run tracks. My shortcomings remind me every single day that my doctorate is just a title and had it not been for the GRACE of God, I would not be here! I am confident in who I am in Christ, yet humbled in spirit. Yes, I am a woman you should get to know.

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world? I remember this day as if it were yesterday. I was a preteen, attending a church service and my mother took one look at me and said, “You are going to do something great with children.” I was holding a baby at that time. I did not think that I would end up becoming an educator, but I always knew that I shared a special connection with children. I always loved the Lord and would spend lots of time in my room as a child reading, dissecting, and writing down information from the bible. I understood everything clearly, as I read and when things were not that clear, I would pray and ask God to help me understand His word. When, “I” knew for myself that I had something special was when I experienced the LOVE of the Lord!

Where can people find out more about you? People call me the, Social Media Queen” because I can be found across the internet. Here are a few outlets that will give you a good overview of who I am and what I do:

How do you make it all happen? I can do ALL things though Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). Amen. I appreciate this HONOR.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 2/28/13- Quvenzhane Wallis History-Making Little Giant

http://bit.ly/ZGHVW9

Quvenzhane Wallis History-Making Little Giant

Quvenzhane Kwe-VEN-zhan-nay,  and means “fairy” in Swahili. Friends and family call her “Nazie” for short.  Quvenzhane is a charming and precious little girl who has warmed the heart of millions as she became the history-making little giant after receiving an Oscar nomination for her role in “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, at the age of nine. Quvenzhane  made history when she became  the youngest Best Actress nominee. At the tender age of five, she audition for  and garnered the role in “Beast of the Southern Wild”. Quvenzhane, plays “Hushpuppy”  a little daring young girl dealing with natural disaster and a dying father.

The talented history-making little giant, Quvenzhane, was born in Houma, Louisiana, the daughter of Qulyndreia, a teacher, and Venjie Wallis, Sr., a truck driver. “Quven”, the first part of her name, combines her parents’ first names, while her mother has stated that zhané means “fairy” in Swahili. http://bit.ly/Wq5MN2

The Oscar buzz and her skills in “Beast of the Southern Wild”, has landed Quvenzhane in the next production of “Annie” as well as you can see her in a film short “Bone Shaker”, and a feature film “Twelve Years A Slave”. Quvenzhane Wallis is a history-making little giant who has also made her presence known. Watching Quvenzhane on the red carpet at the Oscars was beautiful, seeing her with Academy Award winner Halle Berry, was priceless. For her accomplishments to this point in her life, Quvenzhane  is worthy of a round of applause and honor, she has truly earned it. The best is yet to come for Quvenzhane Wallis, her star is shining so bright!

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for 1/29/13 MENTOR If You Sow, They Grow!

 MENTOR-You Sow They Grow!

“You will be so enriched when you sow into the life of others.” ~~YoTrip

Do you have a few hours a week to spend with a young person? Mentoring and the difference it makes in the life of a child is highlighted each January for National Mentoring Month. When you sow into the life of a child through mentoring you open the door to opportunities and possibilities for the child.

Mentoring can do the following:

  • Help guide a child in their growth and development
  • Help a child with education and career goal
  • Help the child fill in the gaps in life

Created in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us—individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits—can work together to increase the number of mentors to assure brighter futures for our young people. http://www.nationalmentoringmonth.org/

As a long time mentor, I have learned that children just want to be encouraged. When you give of your talent, your time and your treasures to a child you will see the impact of your involvement in their lives. A child that is connected with a mentor has another level of support.

For the last eight years I have had the pleasure of working with an emerging non-profit in Central Florida, Tomorrow Investments Matter (T.I.M. Works). The core mission of  T.I.M. Works is to help young ladies gain an increased self-awareness, learn to develop healthy relationships, understand their self-worth, gain financial savvy skills, and develop leadership skills. To learn more about about T.I.M. Works go to http://www.apinkypromise.net/

Let me challenge you to get involved and become a mentor.  The seeds you sow in a child, will be the foundation for growth in a child. Make the difference by being the difference in the life of a child.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for August 2, 2012- Living Her Life Like It’s Golden…Gabby Douglas

Living Her Life Like It’s Golden…Gabby Douglas

"I've been meditating on scriptures sayin...

“I’ve been meditating on scriptures saying be confident in this. And, you know, the bible really helps me so I was very confident.” -Gabby Douglas, photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images (Photo credit: On Being)

Douglas said she had felt confident all along that she would win.

“It was just an amazing feeling,” she said, giggling. “I was just like, Believe, don’t fear, believe.”

Just five months ago, Martha Karolyi, the coordinator of the women’s national team, did not think Douglas had what it took to be an Olympian. She lacked confidence and focus, Karolyi said, even as recently as a few weeks ago.

Douglas disagreed. As this year went on, she thought more and more that she could make the London Games — and win. After sacrificing so much, she had no other choice but to push forward, she said. http://nyti.ms/RkyOon

Gabby Douglas has shown the world that when others count you out, if you believe in yourself and your ability to win, there is nothing that can stop you on your path to greatness. The Olympic two-time gold medalist, is living her life-like its golden and she is shining  bright for all the world to see. Congratulations Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas, your winning spirit and heart of gold shows in your dedication to the sport and are one of the grand representatives of Team USA!

Tell Me Your Dreams

Tell Me Your Dreams (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Dreams Less Sweet

Dreams Less Sweet (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

IT IS POSSIBLE

IT IS POSSIBLE…A DISCOURSE IN BELIEF!

To dream, a dream into reality real… IT IS POSSIBLE!

To have an attitude of determination, despite the arrows of deflation… IT IS POSSIBLE!

To have a “No Turning Back” mindset, when all roads are blocked along the way… IT IS POSSIBLE!

To ponder back into the past, be the pulse of the present, and focus on the future…IT IS POSSIBLE!

To always stand for something and refuse to fall for anything… IT IS POSSIBLE!

To rise above the HATERS of you, and rally around the HEROES in you… IT IS POSSIBLE!

To beat the odds, because you are better than ordinary…IT IS POSSIBLE!

To see defeat as a doorway to an opportunity to try again, if at first you don’t succeed…IT IS POSSIBLE!

To stay in the game, especially when others count you out of the game…IT IS POSSIBLE!

To recognize the best is yet to come, if we stay the course… IT IS POSSIBLE!

TO KNOW THAT ONE OF OUR GREATEST GIFTS IS TO RECOGNIZE AND ACKNOWLEDGE WHO WE ARE, AS A PEOPLE. OUR VAST AND RICH HISTORY, AS A PEOPLE IS TIED TO MANKIND’S BEGINNINGS AND EXISTENCE. KINGS AND QUEENS, RULERS AND ROYALTY, SLAVES AND SERVANTS ARE THE CALLING CARDS OF OUR PEOPLE. NOW IN THIS TIME AND PLACE WE PAUSE… TO HONOR, REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE, THOSE WHO SHOULDERS WE STAND UPON. THE FOREPARENTS OF OUR HISTORY AND HERITAGE, SO GREAT OUR STORIES TO SHARE.

OUR LEGACY BUILT ON THE BRIDGE OF LITERACY AND KNOWLEDGE, COMING TOGETHER IN CELEBRATION OF “WHERE WE WERE, WHO WE ARE, AND WHAT WE SHALL BECOME?

MAY WE NEVER STOP. “YEARNING FOR LEARNING”, FOR THE DAY THAT HAPPENS WE ARE DOOMED AND DESTINED TO DIE.

WE HAVE COME TOO FAR AND HAVE TOO FAR TO GO TO STOP NOW…

IT IS POSSIBLE…IF YOU ONLY BELIEVE

Tuesday Thinking by YoTrip for June 14, 2011-From Castaways to Champions (Vol.3, Iss.2)

Dirk Nowitzki playing with the Dallas Mavericks

Image via Wikipedia

From Castaways to Champions

The Dallas Mavericks became the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2011 Champions after defeating the Miami Heat. The newly crowned champions were not favored to win or even be a contender for the coveted hardware. This Dallas Mavericks team lead by the German power forward, Dirk  Nowitzki  with the masterful shooting range, poise, and patience had to work hard to win. Instead of counting the Dallas Mavericks in, sports analyst and the naysayers were confident this team did not stand a chance against the three-pong threat of Miami’s Dwayne Wade, Lebron James and Chris Bosch.  Beyond the loyalty of their fans , the Dallas Mavericks had few who believed they could or would rise to the occassion and go from castaways to champions.

The Dallas Mavericks team has only been in the league 30 years and has come up short when it comes to winning a title. The legacy of the Los Angeles Lakers for the last several years as the team to beat out of the Western conference has found the Mavericks and other teams standing on the sidelines instead of in the spotlight. This year would prove to be different for Dallas as they found the heart and the will to raise their level of play pass being castaways and onto being champions. The 2011 NBA Finals was the place and the time for the Mavericks to show the world that this team was a team ready to move into the spotlight and take home the crown.

Castaways is a term that was befitting of this Dallas Maverick‘s team who surrounds the All-Star Dirk Nowitzki. The supporting cast of the Dallas Mavericks is  not full of soaring superstars, but of a group of talented players who showed drive, determination and diligence. Seven of the Mavericks fifteen players have ten or more years in the league. Guards Jason Terry and JJ Barea put on three-point clinics as they found the hot spots all over the hardwood in this championship series.Veteran guard Jason Kidd,  has played sixteen years in the league and winning a championship appeared to allude this future hall of fame recipient, but his leadership and experience proved to help make the difference for this team. Shawn Marion used his scrappy defensive play and funky free-throw shooting to be a presence on this  team. Center Tyson Chandler, was solid and protected the basket and provided power dunks when the team needed him to step  up his game. The rest of the Mavericks all gave their all as they chased a chance at becoming the best team in the NBA.

Coach Rick Carlisle, knows what it means to be a champion, as a member of the 1986 Boston Celtics. Carlisle believed in this Maverick team of castaways and kept pushing them to give a little more and play a little harder. The players could respect that coach Carlisle had been where they were and did not disappoint by coming up with wins. No one was prouder of the team than the outspoken and charismatic owner of the Mavericks, Mark Cuban. At every game Cuban could be seen court side in his signature tee shirts cheering the team on to victory. After eleven years of being the owner of a good Dallas Mavericks team, now Cuban was the owner of a championship team.

The Dallas Mavericks are champions and the play of Dirk Nowitzki was pivotal to making this happen. Dirk was consistent, played through the sickness of an 103 degree fever, and stayed the course making clutch shots to keep his team in the running for the championship. Dirk’s play is not flashy, but his talent and understanding of the game shows why he and his Dallas Mavericks have gone from castaways to champions. Congratulations to the Dallas Mavericks, they  have the true spirit and heart of a champion.
