Happy Birthday Miss Zora Neale Hurston
In a place called Notasulga, Alabama on January 7, 1891, Zora Neale was born the fifth of eight children, to John Hurston, a carpenter and Baptist preacher, and Lucy Potts Hurston, a former schoolteacher. The family moved to the historic Town of Eatonville. Established in 1887, the rural community near Orlando was the nation’s first incorporated black township. It was, as Hurston described it, “a city of five lakes, three croquet courts, three hundred brown skins, three hundred good swimmers, plenty guavas, two schools, and no jailhouse.” http://zoranealehurston.com/about/
Today marks the 123rd birthday celebration of the prolific writer and anthropologist. A true Renaissance Woman, Miss Zora was always adding layers to colorful life. I am glad I was introduced to her as a young girl growing up in LA (lovely Augusta, Georgia) and I am glad to say I live a stone’s throw away from Eatonville the place she called home for many years.
During the 1930’s and ’40’s Miss Zora was at the height of her literary career she penned ,Their Eyes Were Watching God, in 1937; Tell My Horse, in 1938; Moses, Man of the Mountain, in 1939. In 1942, Dust Tracks on a Road, was published and Miss Zora was getting some recognition for her brilliant works of art. Also in 1942, Hurston was profiled in Who’s Who in America, Current Biography and Twentieth Century Authors. In 1948, Miss Zora published another novel, Seraph on the Suwanee.
Miss Zora wrote many thought-provoking articles during the 1950’s that spoke to her outlook and insight on the plight and experience of the American Negro. After she had stroke in 1959, Miss Zora and was forced to live in a welfare home in St. Lucie and sadly died a year later. Unable to be properly laid to rest, Miss Zora was buried in an unmarked grave in the Garden of Heavenly Rest, in Fort Pierce, Florida. In the early ’70’s author Alice Walker gave this great lady, Miss Zora Neale Hurston back her dignity back by properly marking her burial site.
Today we salute your life, your living and your amazing legacy, Happy birthday Miss Zora!
