The Air We Breathe

 

November is National COPD Awareness Month and we should not take the air we breathe for granted.Our lifeline is tied directly to the air we breathe,

 

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a serious lung disease which makes it hard to breathe. Also known by other names, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, COPD is now the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and also causes long-term disability.

The number of people who have COPD is on the rise — more than 12 million are currently diagnosed with it. And it is estimated that another 12 million may have COPD but not realize it.

If you or someone you know has symptoms such as chronic coughing, shortness of breath or wheezing, see your doctor or health care provider for a simple breathing test. By taking steps now, and talking with your doctor or health care provider about treatment options, you can breathe better and enjoy a more active life.

The Silence Must Be Broken, Men And Breast Cancer

 

The face of breast cancer has historically been that of women, lately there has been an increase in the number of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer. The silence must be broken on men and breast cancer. Now more than ever the rising number of men who are facing breast cancer, is a call to continue to bring about awareness to all who are affected by this disease.

 

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, there will be approximately 2,190 new cases and 410 deaths due to male breast cancer in 2012. While the majority of breast cancer victims are women, there are still 1.2 men out of every 100,000 that will be diagnosed with the disease. 

 

While survival rates are about the same for both genders, men are often diagnosed at a later age because most men don’t recognize or complain about the symptoms.

 

The main types of breast cancer are the same for men and women, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. About 75 percent of the cases start in the cells lining the milk ducts and are known as ductal carcinomas. The other 25 percent are lobular carcinomas, which are cancers that begin in the lobules, or milk-producing glands. However, the majority of male breast cancer are known as infiltrating ductal carcinomas (IDC), meaning they have spread outside the duct and into the surrounding tissues.

 

Age is a major risk factor for male breast cancers, with the majority of cases diagnosed in men ages 65 to 75, Susan G. Komen for the Cure reported. In addition, women and men who inherited a BRCA2 gene mutation are at a higher risk, with seven percent of these men going on to develop breast cancer by the age of 70. Other risk factors include heavy alcohol use, chronic liver disease and obesity. Some hormone drugs used to treat prostate cancer and exposure to large amounts of radiation can also be a factor. http://cbsn.ws/SZN5XD

 

In the fight for bringing about more education, empowerment and encouragement for breast cancer awareness and how it affects men is the right reason to let the silence be broken on men and breast cancer.

Strokes are not a respecter of any persons color, creed, nationality, or sexual orientation it strikes without warning. In the African-Americans community, the numbers are staggeringly higher than other groups. Know the signs and symptoms to help prevent strokes. You must be your best advocate.

Know the Facts About African Americans and Stroke

Heart disease and stroke are major health risks for all people. But African Americans are at particularly high risk.
Consider this:

• Blacks have almost twice the risk of first-ever strokes compared to whites.
• Blacks have higher death rates for stroke compared to whites.
• The prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans in the United States is the highest in the world.
• Among non-Hispanic blacks age 20 and older, 62.9 percent of men and 77.2 percent of women are overweight or obese.
• In 2001, 27.7 percent of black or African-Americans only, used any tobacco product. Heavy cigarette smoking approximately doubles a person’s risk for stroke when compared to light smokers.
• Black women have higher prevalence rates of high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity and diabetes than white women.

Unlike a stroke, when a TIA occurs, the blood clot resolves itself and there’s no permanent injury. When a stroke occurs and part of your brain dies from lack of blood flow, the part of the body it controls is affected. Strokes can cause paralysis, affect language and vision, and cause other problems.

You Have The Power

The burden of stroke is greater among African Americans than in any other group. In fact, not only do blacks have almost twice the risk of first-ever stroke compared with whites, but blacks 35-54 years old have four times the relative risk for stroke.

But there is hope. You have the power to fight stroke – and win! By following these three simple steps, you can help protect yourself against stroke.

• Reduce your chances of having a stroke by learning the risk factors and working with your doctor to help reduce your risk.
• Recognize the warning signs of a stroke. Stroke is a medical emergency. Every second counts!
• Respond by calling 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone close to you is having warning signs of stroke. Then check the time. When did the first symptom start? You’ll be asked this important question later. http://www.powertoendstroke.org/stroke-african-americans.html
