PERSPECTIVE has to do with how you see the world from your mind’s eye. The who, the what, the where, and the when  in your life is shaped by your vision.”  7/1/13 ~~YoTrip

Everyone has the ability to form an opinion decision based on what you think,  see, hear, touch and feel. Your mind’s eye can set or change the course of your journey in life. Two people can view an event at the very same time and they will have different outcomes based on their perspective.

YoTrip’s Word For The Day: Blessings

Blessed

Blessed (Photo credit: Nastassia Davis [www.nastassiadavis.com])

BLESSINGS: AN ACT OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Do you realize the blessings in your life? Most people will say yes without even thinking about it. We wake up in the morning and our minds are filled with all that we have to complete on our to do list. Did you say “thank you Lord” for my life, health and seeing another day? No you were so consumed with all the things that you wished you had. You forgot about the roof that covers your head at night, the closets you have busting over with clothes, you cannot see the floor for all the shoes that cover it. There is a choice of food items in your refrigerator, you have multiple bathrooms in your home, you drive a vehicle to your destinations and you have a job! All that is a blessing!
This morning as I was on my way to work I went off the normal path and stopped at a different place for coffee. The parking lot was busy with cars coming in and going out in a hurry. I looked out my passenger window and saw her slowing approaching the entrance of the store. This woman was wearing a heavy coat, a hat on her head and layers of tattered clothes in this Florida heat. The woman’s slowness was probably due to the fact that she pulled all her belongings behind her in an old suitcase.
I rushed into the store unfamiliar with the setup seeking coffee. I found the coffee counter and looked for my favorite flavor. Begin to assemble the perfect blend of Joe, and looked for the bananas. I did not see the bananas around the coffee and asked the attendant who directed me to the front counter. I walked toward the front counter and encountered the woman as she carried a 64 oz cup of some red juice and looking at the change in her hand as if she did not have enough for this drink to quench her thirst. As our eyes met, I spoke and so did she, I asked if she would like something else to go with the drink. The woman nodded yes and pointed to the wings in the warmer. I asked the attendant to get her some wings. The woman looked back at me and I said get something else if you like, she whispered “one more thing” my heart danced at that moment. I received the blessing as I gave a blessing to the woman.
The blessing was the act of encouragement I received from the woman. The humility I saw in this woman’s eyes brought me to a place to acknowledge that we must recognize our blessings one by one. Our blessings may seem small but they are the gifts that God has bestowed upon us. I am thankful for each and every blessing that I received today?
Can you share a story of a blessing you received recently? Let me hear back from you, comment below.

YoTrip Presents: June is Men’s Health Awareness Month

Men's Health Week

Men’s Health Week (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month

   Silent Health Crisis
“ T here is a silent health crisis in America…it’s a fact that, on average,
American men live sicker and die younger than American women.”
Dr. David Gremillion, Men’s Health Network

This statement is a sad indictment to the disparage of health among American men. The silence in the crisis that Dr. Gremillion acknowledges speaks volumes on the state of men’s health in this country. Who among the masses does not know a man who is not honoring his temple by taking care of his health? How many also know a man who has had a health scare, he refuses to get a check-up, and walks around like he thinks he is the “man of steel”?

Let’s view some facts about men’s health:

  • Percent of men 18 years and over in fair or poor health: 12.5%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who met the 2008 federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic activity through leisure-time aerobic activity: 52.3%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who had 5 or more drinks in 1 day at least once in the past year: 31.2%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who currently smoke cigarettes: 22.2% (2009-2011)
  • Percent 20 years and over who are obese: 33.9% (2007-2010)
  • Percent 20 years and over with hypertension: 31.7% (2007-2010)
  • Percent of males under 65 years without health insurance coverage: 18.9%
  • Leading causes of death
    • Heart disease
    • Cancer
    • Accidents (unintentional injuries)

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/mens_health.htm

These numbers support the statement of Dr. Gremillion, men are in trouble! What is even sadder is that these numbers are reflective of all men, when we look at African-Americans and Hispanics those numbers are alarmingly high.

As we focus on Men’s Health during June, the numbers are a wake up call and a call to action. It it is time for men to realize, recognize, and respond by declaring “my health is my wealth and I will be well”!

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 3/14/13- An Inventor Beyond Her Time Bessie Blount (Vol.3,Iss.1)

“A black woman can invent something for the benefit of humankind” – Bessie Blount

Bessie Blount, was a physical therapist who worked with soldiers injured in W.W.II. Bessie Blount’s war service inspired her to patent a device, in 1951, that allowed amputees to feed themselves.

The electrical device allowed a tube to deliver one mouthful of food at a time to a patient in a wheelchair or in a bed whenever he or she bit down on the tube. She later invented a portable receptacle support that was a simpler and smaller version of the same, designed to be worn around a patient’s neck. http://inventors.about.com/od/bstartinventors/a/Bessie_Blount.htm

Bessie Blunt could not get all of her inventions patented with ease yet she was not deterred, but lived and worked with determination. The French government saw the need and usefulness of her inventions and shared them with the world. Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for 2/26/13- Civil Rights Activist Harry T. and Harriette Moore (Vol.2,Iss.3)

Harry T. Moore

Civil Rights Activist Harry T. and Harriette  Moore

On Christmas night 1951, Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette retired to bed in their white frame house tucked inside a small orange grove in Mims, Florida. Ten minutes later, a bomb shattered their house, their lives, and any notions that the South’s post-war transition to racial equality would be a smooth one. Harry Moore died that night, his wife nine days later.

Harry T. Moore paved the way for the ‘60s civil rights movement by championing equal pay for black teachers, organizing the black vote and, publicly condemning racist attitudes and actions of local, state and national officials.

Despite a massive FBI investigation and repeated inquisitions, the murders of Harry and Harriette Moore have never been solved. http://www.der.org/films/freedom-never-dies.html

The work of Harry T. Moore was progressive in a time when blacks were not taking actions against systematic racial inequality. A fighter for the people, Harry T. Moore just wanted to see fairness in all aspects of life not only in Brevard County, Florida but throughout the state.

In 1934, Harry Moore started the Brevard County NAACP, and steadily built it into a formidable organization. In 1937, in conjunction with the all-black Florida State Teacher’s Association, and backed by the NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall in New York, Moore filed the first lawsuit in the Deep South to equalize black and white teacher salaries.

n 1944, Thurgood Marshall won a major victory in the landmark Smith v. Allwright case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the “lily-white” Democratic Party primary was unconstitutional. Harry Moore immediately organized the Progressive Voters’ League, and in the next six years, due primarily to his leadership, over 116,000 black voters were registered in the Florida Democratic Party. This represented 31 percent of all eligible black voters in the state, a figure that was 51% higher than any other southern state. http://www.pbs.org/harrymoore/harry/mbio.html

The lead roles that Harry T. Moore assumed in the political advancements cost both Harry and his wife Harriette their teaching jobs. Harry then increased his presence in the NAACP as a full-time worker, recruiting new members and taking on controversial issues as lynching and police brutality. It was the unwavering stance of Harry T. Moore that often put him in the line of fire and many would offer led to his death on Christmas in 1951.

Breaking down barriers and raising awareness of the inequities was the calling card of  the educator, turned political activist. Harry T. Moore with  his wife Harriette by right his side, worked  unselfishly in the struggle to make a difference in the lives of southern blacks. Today and forever we salute the efforts of Harry T. and Harriette Moore in the civil rights movement.

Today marks the one year anniversary of the murder of 17 -year old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. The unarmed teen was gunned down as he walked home. Trayvon’s death has brought to light the use of the “Stand Your Ground” defense.

A Historic Institution Of Higher Learning: Paine College

Paine College Historic District, in Augusta, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 26, 2012. Representing one of the few institutions of higher education created by a biracial board of trustees in Georgia for African-American students, Paine College Historic District was found historically important on the state level. Important for its role in education and African American heritage, the event was marked by a statement from Paine College President George C. Bradley, who wrote, “This is a major milestone in the college’s 131 years of existence, and we look forward to making additional milestones and accomplishments in the legacy of Paine College.”….

Founded in 1882 by trustees from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MEC-S)and the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America (CEMC) with the goal of educating African-American youth, the institution was, from the beginning, a coeducational school.  Paine College continues to serve its original purpose of providing quality education and remains associated with the successor denominations of the founding churches. http://1.usa.gov/X6IUfW

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 2/7/13-Tice Davids & The Underground Railroad

Origin of the Term Underground Railroad

The origins of the Underground Railroad go back before the 18th century, but the terminology dates to around 1831. One version states that an enslaved, Tice Davids, crossed the Ohio River in the vicinity of Ripley, Ohio, a ferryboat ride from the slave state of Kentucky, to escape from his owner. As Tice Davids swam the river, his owner kept him in sight as he pursued him in a small rowboat. He could see Tice’s head bobbling in the river, but once Tice reached the Ohio side, he was lost from view. His owner searched diligently around Ripley, “a town that hated slavery,” but was unable to find his human property. Bewildered and tuckered out, the slave owner could only conclude that Tice Davids “must have gone on an underground road.”

It was subsequent to this incident that those conspirators involved in the escape of Tice Davis, and others, began to use such terms as conductors, firemen, brakemen, stationmaster, depots/stations, and such phrases as “catching the next train” to describe their clandestine, though morally driven, efforts in assisting refugees to escape a morally bankrupted slave-owning South. The terminology used was in line with the country’s early use of steam to propel passenger-carrying vehicles, in this case the railroads. http://www.undergroundrailroadexperience.cuny.edu/origin.html

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for 1/8/13-January is Thyroid Awareness Month (Vol.1, Iss.2)

Overview of the thyroid system (See Wikipedia:...

Overview of the thyroid system (See Wikipedia:Thyroid). To discuss image, please see Talk:Human body diagrams (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Understanding the Thyroid

January is Thyroid Awareness month. The thyroid is a body part that is small in size but large in its functionality. As a center for how the body operates, the thyroid has the ability to work normally or it can be under active (Hypothyroidism) or overactive (Hyperthyroidism). All month-long there will be post that encourage, educate, enlighten and empower the readers regarding the thyroid.

The thyroid gland is an important endocrine gland that controls the body’s metabolism. It is a small butterfly shaped gland located in the front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland produces the hormones tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Together these hormones regulate how your cells use energy. The pathways by which cells use energy is called metabolism. Your body’s general metabolism determines blood pressure, heart rate, and weight.

Hypothyroidism is a condition where your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. Low levels of thyroid hormone interfere with the body’s ability to perform normal metabolic functions such as efficient use of energy from food products, regulation of many chemical reactions in the body, and maintenance of healthy cells, bones and muscles, to name a few..

There is no known prevention for hypothyroidism, nor is there a cure. Once you have it, you have it for life. http://bit.ly/UIJR2z
