Celebrate The 8 in 2015

****note it took me a few days to complete this post ****

We are Eight days into the Year of 2015. Are you embracing the New Year with a joyous and positive mindset? The number 8 is symbolic of, “new beginnings” in our life. Today I used the number 8 to help show someone that no matter what happens we were given this day and this year to live. I say this year because 2+0+1+5=8 and that equals “new beginnings”.

The beginning of the year is a time when people inspect and reflect on where they are and where they want to be in life. Let me encourage you, as you celebrate the 8, it is time for you to decide to live. Just a few days ago I had to bring this concept home to someone who was internalizing things that was causing them undo distress. I had to explain that he was not bleeding or on fire so he was granted a gift of life. I further explained that since he was here on earth this day it was his duty to live life. I asked him to affirmatively speak these words, “today I decide to live life!” Let go of the things you cannot control and embrace what is in front of you…this moment…this minute…right now, the eight…your new beginnings!

At that point I had to show him what he needed to envision and that was the power of the eight. I took to the whiteboard and commenced to draw the number eight going from the left swinging downward to the right circling upward to the left and the coming upward to the right to complete the number. Then I began to draw from the right side, swinging downward to the left and coming upward to the right, to complete the number. The number eight has the numerical distinction of being contiguous. It is the same right side up or upside down. It crosses at it middle and is the epitome of infinity.

I liken the number eight to our lives, it starts at birth (our beginning) and we journey up and down the pathways, up the hills and down into the valley. When we reach the mid points in the eight, we can decide to journey backward in reflection of our past or go forward in expectation of our future, it is all still connected. The contiguous makeup of the number eight allows us to start over again, and again, and again, and again with each new day!

Let me challenge you to celebrate the eight by affirming “today I decide to live!” Now go and make a fresh start to this new beginning in the Year of 2015!

Daddy Always With Us

(This post is lengthy, but worth the time it takes to read it. Thanks in advance)

November 3, 1989 is a day that caused my family’s life  to be turned upside down. My favorite man in all the planet, William Henry Clay, Sr. moved from life on earth to death and living in his eternal home.

This week marks 25 years since, Daddy moved his address from earth to heaven. I so desire to write about where I am and the struggle to share my recall of my Daddy.

My fingers have made several attempts to express how much I miss my Daddy and wish I could have him to take care of everything.

On Monday November 3rd, as my sister Greta and I prepared to return to Florida from our hometown of Augusta, we saw a Facebook post that Kim Lockett Holmes had passed away. I could not believe nor wrap my head around this news. Already trying to think positively about Daddy, this news intensified my sadness.

The power of social media is a blessing and a curse. Like wildfire my Facebook timeline was filled with fellow Lucy Laney High School Wildcats sharing their condolences to Kim’s son and family. As my mind raced and sadness crept in, I recalled that Kimmie was always smiling and now her soul was resting in heaven.

Now it is November 16th, thought I would work on this post again. Well in the last few weeks I have been stunned by the death of a childhood friend and child I watched grow from little lady to young lady.

Monday the 10th came and I was hit with a text message that made me stop in my tracks. The death angel had struck again  This time it was one of my former Sunday School students. At 18 years young, Jayla decided to take her own life. I just kept saying this does not make sense. Why Lord? Why?

I really cannot believe that Jayla is gone. What a beautiful face tied to a troubled spirit. Over the years I watched as her grandmother and aunt poured into her life and offered her a strong foundation. Jayla’s family wanted to see her be and do her best. May Jayla’s soul be at rest.

I still could not finish the post about Daddy. Every time I started, I just could not focus.

I still was not able to write about my Daddy. Thoughts were in my head, yet my pen was not ready.

Monday the 24th came and all I wanted was some good news. Well again I was told of a tragic death. An innocent young child had died and she had touched the lives of many in my circle.

This has been a trying month. November is traditionally a time of gratitude and thankfulness. Even as we pause to celebrate Thanksgiving, I had thoughts of these souls that had transitioned from earth to eternal rest. Thinking of them brought me back to memories of my Daddy.

If I could only have time to tell him all the things that happened in my life for the last 25 years. (We would need a little time).I would love to hear my Daddy’s voice and his words of wisdom and see him smile. I would tell Daddy I have learned a few lessons:
-You cannot buck the system (Order is here for a reason)
-Education will take you far but, don’t forget common sense (I learn something new daily)
-The world owes you nothing so don’t stop showing them who you are (Always a Clay)
-Family is your blood and the community you are surrounded with in life (Momma, Greta, and William Jr., love them to life)
-Keep God first and everything else will fall in line (All the glory and honor)
-Never stop believing in yourself ( Because of you, I can and I will)

As November comes to a close, I am glad I found the strength to finish this post. It allowed me to share my feelings as I recall my Daddy. We who remain here on earth experience  the emotional roller of feelings. We encounter the good, the bad, the happy, the sad, the joy, the pain, the heartache, the love, the hate, the birth and the death in this thing called life!

I am honored to call myself a card carrying, “Daddy’s Girl For Life”. William Henry Clay,Sr you are forever in my heart and I miss you like crazy.

Peaceful rest Kim, Jayla, little baby girl and so many others that transitioned from life to death this month of November.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for October 7, 2010-VALUE What Matters Most (Vol.5, Iss.1)

Life is beautiful so know its value...

Image by Parvin ♣( OFF for a while ) via Flickr

What do you VALUE in your life? Who do you VALUE in your life? What really matters most to you? Who really matters most to you? How do you assign VALUE to what matters in your life? Have you or do you take life, health and strength for granted? Do believe that family, friends, and fellowman are going to be here forever? Are you so consumed in the self-cares of life that you VALUE little about others?

The questions about VALUE are loaded, and should cause you to pause, take note and take action. VALUE is the sum total of worth that is assigned or the importance given to a person, place or possession. Who, what and where you place VALUE is a telling sign to what matters most in your life. So often the rat race and fast pace gets you caught up and you are chasing places and possessions and putting people on the back-burner. Many people will tell you that I am working hard for the people (my family) so that they can have the best that life has to offer. Others will say that it takes a lot to have “nice stuff” and I must keep working hard to maintain. These are the same people that never make it to their son’s football game, daughter’s recital, a open house and cannot tell you the last time they joined the family at the table for a meal. The people who are ripping and running in the name of “making more” and “having more”, do not even see that their view of VALUE, has changed and shifted.

When you lose touch with the VALUE of family and friends (people), then you find it is easy to embrace the notion of “making more” and “having more”.Let’s be clear, it is good to be able to possess and have access to things, especially when you work hard and make sacrifices. So often, you will find that “having more” and “making more” does not sustain you or make you feel a sense of contentment. It is too easy to become consumed and the VALUE of your efforts to have possessions and places, diminish the VALUE of people.
The journey of life is a great teacher and sets a path on how to VALUE what matters most. As you travel on the path of life, it is up to you to make the decision; will you run from start to finish, hoping to finally make it and then get a chance to take a rest. Or will you enjoy the journey, take the time to stop along the way and see the VALUE and beauty in life. Everyone has the ability to make a choice about what you VALUE in life, who you VALUE in life, and how you assign VALUE in your life? If you have shifted your VALUE focus from people to possessions and places, there is no better time than the present to rethink ponder on how you can VALUE WHAT MATTERS MOST!
