Public Service My Calling To Fulfill

By Yolanda Triplett

Today’s 13% post comes to you from Yolanda Triplett who is the Program Development Supervisor for the Division of Building Safety in Orange County Florida. Yolanda’s customer centric position provides oversight for the reception area, contractor licensing, online services, and the telephone call center and division outreach.

“Citizen Service is the very American idea that we meet
our challenges not as isolated individuals but as members of
a true community, with all of us working together. Our mission
is nothing less than to spark a renewed sense of obligation,
a new sense of duty, a new season of service.”
– William Jefferson Clinton, 42nd President of the United States

The 28th day of July in the year of 1998, I embarked on this journey called public service. I liken my career as a public administrator with the Division of Building Safety, in Orlando, Florida to a journey because it has definitely taken me places both personally and professionally. Serving the public in an industry that is dominated by males; I have learned valuable lessons and earned the respect of those whom I serve along with daily. I recognize the work that I do as public service and it is my calling to fulfill.

For seventeen years, I have had the pleasure of serving the public with their building permits and inspections needs. I love to share with people who I work in a place where we help citizens and those in the construction industry go from “dirt to dollars”! The core mission of the Division of Building Safety is to ensure that buildings are built safely according to state and local codes. Citizens and design professionals start a process with a plan on paper and finish the process with a structure that they will utilize for living, working, or playing in our community. As a proud public servant, I assist those on the building and construction journey with navigating the process. continue reading here

Celebrate The 8 in 2015

20150108-231751.jpg
****note it took me a few days to complete this post ****

We are Eight days into the Year of 2015. Are you embracing the New Year with a joyous and positive mindset? The number 8 is symbolic of, “new beginnings” in our life. Today I used the number 8 to help show someone that no matter what happens we were given this day and this year to live. I say this year because 2+0+1+5=8 and that equals “new beginnings”.

The beginning of the year is a time when people inspect and reflect on where they are and where they want to be in life. Let me encourage you, as you celebrate the 8, it is time for you to decide to live. Just a few days ago I had to bring this concept home to someone who was internalizing things that was causing them undo distress. I had to explain that he was not bleeding or on fire so he was granted a gift of life. I further explained that since he was here on earth this day it was his duty to live life. I asked him to affirmatively speak these words, “today I decide to live life!” Let go of the things you cannot control and embrace what is in front of you…this moment…this minute…right now, the eight…your new beginnings!

At that point I had to show him what he needed to envision and that was the power of the eight. I took to the whiteboard and commenced to draw the number eight going from the left swinging downward to the right circling upward to the left and the coming upward to the right to complete the number. Then I began to draw from the right side, swinging downward to the left and coming upward to the right, to complete the number. The number eight has the numerical distinction of being contiguous. It is the same right side up or upside down. It crosses at it middle and is the epitome of infinity.

I liken the number eight to our lives, it starts at birth (our beginning) and we journey up and down the pathways, up the hills and down into the valley. When we reach the mid points in the eight, we can decide to journey backward in reflection of our past or go forward in expectation of our future, it is all still connected. The contiguous makeup of the number eight allows us to start over again, and again, and again, and again with each new day!

Let me challenge you to celebrate the eight by affirming “today I decide to live!” Now go and make a fresh start to this new beginning in the Year of 2015!

It Been 20 Years…

This week marks the anniversary of my arrival in the land of Mickey (Orlando) from the land of Country Music (Nashville). It is funny how the time has passed  as I reflect back to that face, that place, that space of January 1994…

In the days to come I will recall, revisit and remember the journey from Nashville or shall I say Antioch, Tennessee to Orlando, Florida.

It seems like yesterday when I received the call from my husband (yes I was a “Mrs.” back then. Another post for another time) saying the company (Olive Garden/OG) had accepted the proposal we developed, was ready to move forward and move us to sunny Orlando, Florida.

I was a ball of emotions trying to take in the fact that we were leaving Nashville (a place that had grown to be home in my three years there) and heading southward to Orlando. This was it.

Before we moved the OG brought us down for a visit and to help with the transition. We stayed at the then Adams Mark Hotel which is attached to the Florida Mall. While my husband met with his new bosses, I hung out at the mall and planned for our upcoming moving date and looked at where I would work once we settled in to Orlando.

During our visit we were wined and dined with Presidents and Vice Presidents and other corporate big wigs.

Our time in Orlando was fun and full of relaxation. I arrived in Nashville in relation mode. Over the next month, I was in relocation mode. I had to be ready when the movers arrived.

This move was apart of our dream. All we had to do was be ready to go forward. It was still scary going to a new lands. A co-worker knew I loved by Dr. Maya Angelou so she gave me the book,” I Won’t Take Nothing For My Journey”, the title speaks volumes to where we were going.

On Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr weekend in January 1994 Tim, Snoopy (the dog) and I headed to Augusta, Georgia to see my family and friends and to rest.

After 20 years, I have had some ups and downs, some wins and some loss. I am here and still standing. I can truly say, The Best Is Yet To Come!

YoTrip Presents: Sometimes It Is Not Meant To Be 082193

Peace: It does not mean to be in a place where...

Peace: It does not mean to be in a place where there is no trouble, no noise or hard work. It means to be in the midst of all these things and still be calm in your heart. (Photo credit: deeplifequotes)

Sometimes It Is Not Meant To Be

Twenty years have come and gone
What started out great, did not last that long
Sometimes it is not meant to be
We do not hold, know, or can see beyond now
Our time is present, and we have hope for our future
Sometimes it is not meant to be
All the plans made, they fizzle and fade…away
You look back and you wonder…Why?
Sometimes it is not meant to be
How did we go from always and forever
To this cannot last past our heart-filled dreams
Sometimes it is not meant to be
As the days turn to weeks,  and then turn into months and  finally years
The memory of what was, merely dims out slowly, like a flickering flame
Sometimes it is not meant to be
Then you look around and twenty years have passed and you wonder
About the should a’s and the would a’s of your life
Sometimes it is not meant to be
Yet you cannot grab back what has faded away, the moments, the memory came and served their purpose
The assignment was complete and you move on
Sometimes it is not meant to be
You look back at the path and thank God for the journey
Where you came from is a stepping stone to where you are going
Sometimes it is not meant to be
Then the light guides you to the revelation that
Sometimes It Is Not Meant To Be…FOREVER!

YoTrip Presents: Dr. Loretta Faith Harris “A Woman People Should Know”

YoTrip Presents: Dr. Loretta Faith Harris ” A Woman People Should Know”

LFHred hand fold

Below is my sixth feature blog post in honor of Women’s History Month.  It is important that we celebrate the beauty and brains of women. Please enjoy learning about these fascinating women and then make sure you support them in their passions, projects, and products

Who are you? My name is Dr. Loretta Faith Harris, but I live by Faith. I am the second of five children to the parents of Meshach and Delrene Harris. My humble beginnings are in Pahokee “Muck city” Florida where I take pride and joy. There is a lot in a name and I believe that God divinely ordained my name. Faith foreshadowed my life’s encounters and experiences, which required COMPLETE and TOTAL Faith in God.

What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”? I believe that my genuine, transparent, and honest approach to share my life experiences make me a woman people should know. Life is everything but a fairy tale! When you have survived tragedy, adversity, and even experienced death, you adopt a new perspective towards life encounters. My experiences of overcoming death-defying odds and making it to my eventual triumph are chronicled in my award-winning memoir, “The Journey Less Traveled: Choose to Turn Your Tragedy into Triumph.” So, I say to anyone reading this blog, “Take the time” to get to know the true woman.

When I rise in the morning before my feet hit the ground I whisper, “Good morning Holy Spirit” because my Father and I are one. There is a reason I face my fears and skydive, rock climb, and run tracks. My shortcomings remind me every single day that my doctorate is just a title and had it not been for the GRACE of God, I would not be here! I am confident in who I am in Christ, yet humbled in spirit. Yes, I am a woman you should get to know.

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world? I remember this day as if it were yesterday. I was a preteen, attending a church service and my mother took one look at me and said, “You are going to do something great with children.” I was holding a baby at that time. I did not think that I would end up becoming an educator, but I always knew that I shared a special connection with children. I always loved the Lord and would spend lots of time in my room as a child reading, dissecting, and writing down information from the bible. I understood everything clearly, as I read and when things were not that clear, I would pray and ask God to help me understand His word. When, “I” knew for myself that I had something special was when I experienced the LOVE of the Lord!

Where can people find out more about you? People call me the, Social Media Queen” because I can be found across the internet. Here are a few outlets that will give you a good overview of who I am and what I do:

How do you make it all happen? I can do ALL things though Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). Amen. I appreciate this HONOR.
