Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 10/11/12 Guest Post by Dr. Darcova Triplett, STRUT FOR A CURE CELEBRATIONS (Vol.10, Iss.2)

STRUT FOR A CURE CELEBRATIONS

Guest Post by Dr. Darcova Triplett

Dr. Darcova Triplett  is the Editor-in-Chief of STRUT! The Magazine. This magazine was created to provide the platform for women to walk in confidence, competence and conviction. What started out as a magazine has transformed into a movement that empowers women to explore their gifts and talents and then use them to positively influence and impact the world. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Triplett will be recognized in history as the brainchild for STRUT FOR A CURE. Under the direction of Dr. Triplett, on Saturday, October 6, 2012, supporters in Nevada, California, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and New York will simultaneously declare victory over this disease that directly affects 1 in 8 women. STRUT FOR A CURE has been created to educate women about this devastating disease that carries the following statistics:

1)      For women in the United States of America, breast cancer is the most common cancer.

2)      African American women under the age of 45 are more likely than any other ethnic group to develop and die from breast cancer.

3)      About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

STRUT FOR A CURE stands on the shoulders of Annie Doris Brown and Bieace Brown- King. Through this endeavor, Dr. Triplett celebrates the life of her grandmother, Annie Doris Brown, who traded in her PINK boxing gloves for Angel Wings in 2010. She also supports her mother, Bieace Brown- King, who is a one year breast cancer Survivor. “Watching that disease spread through my grandmother’s body was overwhelming. And when my mother was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, I felt compelled to do something,” proclaims Darcova. Thus, STRUT FOR A CURE. When Dr. Triplett reached out to family and close friends throughout the United States of America, they eagerly took on the vision and agreed to serve as hostesses. Thanks to Candice Lockhart Smith (California), Keisha Clark  (Louisiana), Yolanda Triplett and Wanda Winston (Florida), Trinette Collier (Georgia) and La Verne Newton (New York), STRUT FOR A CURE is destined to reach the masses.

Monetary contributions collected during the STRUT FOR A CURE extravaganza will be donated to Mothers, Daughters and Sisters Against Breast Cancer, Inc. where the focus is on helping uninsured and underinsured women pay for mammograms. Dr. Triplett is on the Board of Directors for this nonprofit organization and her mother, Bieace Brown-King, is the Co-Founder.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for May 3, 2012-Stroke Awareness (Vol.5, Iss.1)

May is Stroke Awareness Month

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. It is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability. Although most strokes occur in people aged 65 years or older, strokes can occur at any age. For example, a new CDC study, Trends of Acute Ischemic Stroke Hospitalizations in the U.S.: 1994–2007, found that stroke hospitalizations increased among both males and females aged 5–44 years old, raising concern about this young population.

Photo: A woman reading information on a laptop computer.Knowing the symptoms of stroke and calling 9-1-1 immediately if someone appears to be having a stroke are crucial steps in getting prompt emergency medical care for a stroke. New treatments are available that can reduce the damage caused by a stroke for some victims, but these treatments need to be given soon after the symptoms start. http://www.cdc.gov/Features/Stroke/

Strokes call for the those around a person experiencing signs and symptoms to need fast actions to get them proper care. Getting care could mean the difference of  life threatening affects.  When a stroke strikes it does not take a poll or have any respect of persons. Know the signs and be ready and willing to act in the nick of time.

This month I will highlight and bring awareness to National Stroke Awareness

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for April 24, 2012- Miss Zora Meets Dr.Maya (Vol.4, Iss.4)

Maya Angelou, February 2011

Maya Angelou, February 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Today is the 124th birthday celebration for the one and only Miss Zora Neale Hurston. As the world pauses to remember the genius woman of Eatonville, Florida’s favorite adopted daughter, I wonder what would Miss Zora think of this world and how would she record it. ” I have the nerve to walk my own way, however hard, in my search for reality, rather than climb upon the rattling wagon of wishful illusions.” Letter from Zora Neale Hurston to Countee Cullen like she expounds in the quote she walked her own way.

Since this post first appeared almost three years ago, Miss Zora has an auspicious author, a passionate poet, and a wisdom-filled writer the incomparable Dr. Maya Angelou, join her beyond the heavenly gates. I can only imagine sitting at the feet of greatness and gleaning the wisdom and knowledge they would so freely share. Miss Zora and Miss Maya two renaissance women who gave the world so much and left indelible footprints of a beauty legacy on this journey called life. 1-7-15

This post is in celebration of National Poetry Month during the month of April. Miss Zora Neale Hurston and Dr. Maya Angelou are two of my “sheroes” for being women who epitomize making your own way. Both Miss Zora and Dr. Maya set the pace for their contemporaries to try to keep up. A dear friend of mine Publisher, author, poet and “every woman”, Katandra Shanel Jackson Taylor of Freedom Ink Publishing http://www.freedomink365.com/ saw a picture of me at an event and inspired me to pen this post. Here is the poetic piece, enjoy!

Miss Zora Meets Dr.Maya

Two sassy southern belle’s meet on a dusty road

Walking in purpose and passion as they carry their load

I can almost hear them as they speak and share their stories

Shouting, jumping for joy and sharing in each others glories

“I Won’t Take Nothing For My Journey” Dr. Maya tells all

How about those “Mules and Men” back at her Miss Zora recalls

Walking along their path two women find their souls are intertwined

“Dust Tracks On The Road’ Miss Zora exclaims from deep within

“I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings” Dr.Maya shares her life with her pen

These two writers, poets, authors, educated women equipped with their own way of thinking and mind

Make no mistake Miss Zora and Dr.Maya can be called two strong women and truly one of a kind.

April is National Poetry Month

Poetry Magazine is celebrating 100 years of publishing  read about it’s humble beginnings .

Poetry (founded as, Poetry: A Magazine of Verse), published in Chicago, Illinois since 1912, is one of the leading monthly poetry journals in the English-speaking world. Published by the Poetry Foundation and currently edited by Christian Wiman, the magazine has a circulation of 30,000 and prints 300 poems per year[1] out of approximately 100,000 submissions.[2] It is sometimes referred to as Poetry–Chicago.
Poetry has been financed since 2003 with a $200 million grant from Ruth Lilly.

Founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe in 1912, Poetry magazine began with the “Open Door”:

May the great poet we are looking for never find it shut, or half-shut, against his ample genius! To this end the editors hope to keep free of entangling alliances with any single class or school. They desire to print the best English verse which is being written today, regardless of where, by whom, or under what theory of art it is written.

In its first year Poetry published William Carlos Williams and William Butler Yeats; Joyce Kilmer’s “Trees” and Ezra Pound’s “In a Station of the Metro”; and introduced Rabindranath Tagore to the English-speaking world just before he was awarded the Nobel Prize.Founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe in 1912, Poetry magazine began with the “Open Door”:

YoTrip-Words and Thoughts for Monday, December 27, 2010-HOW WAS MY AIM? (Vol.12, Iss.12)

AOL Instant Messenger

Image via Wikipedia

The year 2010 is quickly marching toward a close. Now is a great time to evaluate the past and prepare for the pending future. As we look to start 2011, I ponder the question: How was my AIM in 2010? Did I reach the goals that were set? I wished to ASPIRE personally and professionally. I sought to INSPIRE others by sharing my gifts. I hoped to MOTIVATE the masses to be their best self. There are four more days left let’s see what more we can accomplish!

(Re-posted from Monday, December 28, 2009)

Determined to define my outlook for the coming year, I have decided to take a three-pronged approach to my 2010 tag line.

A.I.M. To Win in 2010

AIM is defined- To intend or direct for a particular effect or purpose, to strive for a goal.

When I think of AIM I am lead to focus on the target or goal that is ahead of me. I thought that AIM needed legs (words) that will constantly make me remember and focus on it. For me AIM now means to: AAspire, IInspire, MMotivate

Aspire is defined-To long, aim, or seek ambitiously; be eagerly desirous, esp. for something great or of high value. To have a great ambition or ultimate goal; desire strongly.

In 2010, I will continue to seek to ASPIRE to higher heights in my personal and professional growth and development.

Inspire is defined-To fill with an animating, quickening, or exalting influence. To fill or affect with a specified feeling, thought to influence or impel.

In 2010, I will continue to INSPIRE by sharing my gifts with others with the hope that significance is achieved.

Motivate is defined-To provide with an incentive; move to action; impel.

In 2010, I will continue to MOTIVATE and push those in my sphere of influence to be their best self.

A.I.M., is a simplistic approach to a winning formula for 2010. A.I.M is personal (for me), is communal (for us), and is essential. I believe with prayer, determination, focus and a spirit of perseverance A.I.M. is possible!

I am interested in your feedback, please share your thoughts before 2009 expires.

Thanks for being you, it does make a difference!

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for August 12, 2010-Losing to Gain (Vol.3, Iss.2)

Losing To Gain (People), Part 2

Last week the topic of “Losing to Gain” was introduced in the form of several questions, posed to make you ponder the concept of losing. The feedback was great; it is good to know someone is reading these words. Today we will examine the “people portion” of Losing to Gain. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this topic or others that are shared.

We are all born with an invisible expiration date on our foreheads. A person’s time of birth is certain and is announced upon their arrival in this world. The wailing cries of an infant are their calling card. The joyous celebration that is had for your birth is a marked difference to the service held for your departure. Leaving here, transitioning, and going home, dying is as certain as our birth.

The human reaction to death is usually filled with sadness, sorrow and surrender. Our hearts are heavy, our hands try to hold on and our heads are helpless in our need to understand WHY our loved one, friend, neighbor, co-worker, or stranger left us in this world. Quite simply, we want answers to the inevitable activity of death. As much as we know death will come, we are most times mentally, physically, socially and emotionally unprepared to face that which death brings. Those who have a spiritual connection realize that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”. The soul of the saved are released from this earth and the physical shell remains.

So often at the time of mourning people will say, “I am so sorry for your loss”. Yet the believer knows that if a person knows the Lord, then they are far from being LOST or a LOSS to those who loved them. When the pain subsides and the peace begins to sustain, you will find a comfort in knowing the loss of people can be seen as a blessing. The loss becomes a gain in the sweet assurance of knowing the dead and dearly departed move on to a place of rest. As much as people hurt when people they love and care about transition from this earth, in time those left behind will see the beauty in the loss and celebrate those who have gained eternal life.

In loving memory of Larry McCormack (Husband of Karen), we met once or twice in this life but I am sure I will see you in the great beyond. For the countless others we celebrate the life you lived and the new life they have gained! Losing to Gain…
