Nelson Mandela…The Servant Father of South Africa In His Own Words

http://cdn1.thefamouspeople.com/profiles/images/nelson-mandela/quotes/118556.png

The world took a pause as we learned of the death of  Nelson Mandela. We can say a great deal about him but I found it most fitting to let his own words speak volumes to what he has said in his 95 years of living. Take your rightfully earned place of rest…as we honor and salute you Mr.

“One day I will be the first black president of South Africa.” 1952

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” Rivonia trial on 20 April 1964

“Difficulties break some men but make others. No axe is sharp enough to cut the soul of a sinner who keeps on trying, one-armed with the hope that he will rise even in the end.” Letter to Winnie Mandela, 1 February 1975

Friends, comrades and fellow South Africans, I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people. Your tireless and heroic sacrifices have made it possible for me to be here today. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands.” Speaking on his release from Robben Island from the balcony of Cape Town city hall on Sunday 11 February 1990

“Since my release, I have become more convinced than ever that the real makers of history are the ordinary men and women of our country; their participation in every decision about the future is the only guarantee of true democracy and freedom.” The Struggle is My Life 1990

“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.” Interview for the documentary Mandela, 1994  http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/06/nelson-mandela-life-quotes

“This is a war. It has killed more people than has been the case in all previous wars and in all previous natural disasters. We must not continue to be debating, to be arguing, when people are dying.” — On HIV/Aids.

“Nobody knows when they are going to die. Even though I am an old man I do not dwell on the possibility of death. Death comes when it is ready.” — Three days before it was announced that he had been diagnosed with microscopic prostate cancer in 2001. http://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/mandela/2013/12/06/one-hundred-quotes-from-nelson-mandela

YoTrip Presents A Poetic Expression “I Cannot But If I Could…”

English: Breat Cancer ribbons

English: Breast Cancer ribbons (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I Cannot But If I Could…

I cannot speak your pain
I cannot speak your pain
I cannot speak your pain
I cannot even imagine what it means to hear those words
Those words
Those words
Those words
You have BREAST CANCER
CANCER OF THE BREAST
CANCER IN YOUR CHEST
CANCER yes BREAST CANCER
CANCER no BREAST CANCER
I cannot hear your pain
I cannot hear your pain
I cannot hear your pain
It came like a thief in the night no warning
No alarm tripped to alert you of its arrival
Never made a sound above a whisper, yet it’s results speaks volumes
I cannot feel your pain
I cannot feel your pain
I cannot feel your pain
The perilous poison crept in like the invasion of the body snatchers
Cancer connected itself to one of the life centers of your body, your breast
Cancer grabbed you and sought to hold you hostage
I cannot see your pain
I cannot see your pain
I cannot see your pain
Cancer is not always visible to those looking outside in
Your courage to go on, gives you strength when your body is weak and wants to give up
What appears to be perfection resting upon your chest is the pathway to your pain
I cannot heal your pain
I cannot heal your pain
I cannot heal your pain
The sad sickness of Cancer it never looks the same one from another
The Oncologist determine a treatment plan radiation, chemotherapy, medication or just cutting cancer out of your body
It is your faith in the great Physician that helps you, that holds you, that heals you

But if I could…
If I could speak your pain I would cry out to God on your behalf
If I could hear your pain I would tell it to be silent and never to utter a word again
If I could feel your pain I would take it on so you could rest
If I could heal your pain-I would clear this world of breast cancer and all it has done
If I could see your pain I would be more aware beyond these 31 days, 744 hours, 44,640 minutes, 2,678,400 seconds and more moments than we can ever count!

Let what you speak, what you hear, what you feel, what you heal, and what you see make a difference in the lives of others….
I pray to God that He sends us a cure for Breast Cancer, until then let’s turn the pain into a reason to praise The Lord Jesus who rules and reigns forever in our lives!

YoTrip Presents: September Is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Childhood Cancers

Key Points

  1. What are the most common types of childhood cancer?Among the 12 major types of childhood cancers, leukemias (blood cell cancers) and cancers of the brain and central nervous system account for more than half of the new cases. About one-third of childhood cancers are leukemias. The most common type of leukemia in children is acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The most common solid tumors are brain tumors (e.g., gliomas andmedulloblastomas), with other solid tumors (e.g., neuroblastomas, Wilms tumors, and sarcomassuch as rhabdomyosarcoma and osteosarcoma) being less common.
  2. How many children are diagnosed with cancer in the United States annually? In the United States in 2007, approximately 10,400 children under age 15 were diagnosed with cancer and about 1,545 children will die from the disease (1). Although this makes cancer the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children 1 to 14 years of age, cancer is still relatively rare in this age group. On average, 1 to 2 children develop the disease each year for every 10,000 children in the United States (2).

YoTrip Presents: Hey Men! It Is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September Is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

As the month of September brings prostate cancer into focus, it’s time to increase public understanding of the disease, including its prevalence, approaches to screening and prevention, treatment options, and resources that offer updated prostate cancer information throughout the year.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men and is a leading cause of cancer death in men, second only to lung cancer. According to American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 192,280 new cases of prostate cancer and an estimated 27,360 deaths in the United States during 2009.[1] Staying informed with the latest news on prevention and screening is an important step in reducing your risk of developing prostate cancer. And, should a diagnosis occur, access to current, in-depth treatment information can help you find the best care.

YoTrip Presents: September is Gynecologic Cancers Awareness Month

Get In The Know About Down Below

Do you recognize that your health is your wealth? You can have riches beyond your imagination but all the things (houses, cars, and real estate) cannot keep you alive and well! Your health matters and that means your total health.  September is a month filled with health related awareness. Let me draw your attention one of them.

Gynecologic Cancers Awareness Month highlights the five different types of cancers that plague the reproductive area. Five main types of cancer affect a woman’s reproductive organs: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. As a group, they are referred to as gynecologic cancer. (A sixth type of gynecologic cancer is the very rare fallopian tube cancer.)

The Inside Knowledge: Get the Facts About Gynecologic Cancer campaign raises awareness of the five main types of gynecologic cancer: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar. It encourages women to pay attention to their bodies and know what is normal for them, so they can recognize the warning signs of gynecologic cancers and seek medical care. When gynecologic cancers are found early, treatment is most effective.   http://www.cdc.gov/cancer/knowledge/

YoTrip Presents: June is Men’s Health Awareness Month

Men's Health Week

Men’s Health Week (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month

   Silent Health Crisis
“ T here is a silent health crisis in America…it’s a fact that, on average,
American men live sicker and die younger than American women.”
Dr. David Gremillion, Men’s Health Network

This statement is a sad indictment to the disparage of health among American men. The silence in the crisis that Dr. Gremillion acknowledges speaks volumes on the state of men’s health in this country. Who among the masses does not know a man who is not honoring his temple by taking care of his health? How many also know a man who has had a health scare, he refuses to get a check-up, and walks around like he thinks he is the “man of steel”?

Let’s view some facts about men’s health:

  • Percent of men 18 years and over in fair or poor health: 12.5%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who met the 2008 federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic activity through leisure-time aerobic activity: 52.3%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who had 5 or more drinks in 1 day at least once in the past year: 31.2%
  • Percent of men 18 years and over who currently smoke cigarettes: 22.2% (2009-2011)
  • Percent 20 years and over who are obese: 33.9% (2007-2010)
  • Percent 20 years and over with hypertension: 31.7% (2007-2010)
  • Percent of males under 65 years without health insurance coverage: 18.9%
  • Leading causes of death
    • Heart disease
    • Cancer
    • Accidents (unintentional injuries)

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/mens_health.htm

These numbers support the statement of Dr. Gremillion, men are in trouble! What is even sadder is that these numbers are reflective of all men, when we look at African-Americans and Hispanics those numbers are alarmingly high.

As we focus on Men’s Health during June, the numbers are a wake up call and a call to action. It it is time for men to realize, recognize, and respond by declaring “my health is my wealth and I will be well”!
