Fireworks Light Up The Sky

The fireworks have always been a part of the celebration. From the United States inception, until its 238th birthday on yesterday as fireworks light up the sky.

The colorful night lights flood the skylines of cities in honor of the independence of these United States from Great Britain. Yet we cannot take credit for the creation of the bombs bursting in air. It was the Chinese during the 7th century that made a combination of gun podwer and leaves that when fired up caused loud noises as it ignited into the clouds. As a source of celebration, fireworks have always been a centerpiece of the holiday party.

As a child, I recall seeing the roadside display tents for fireworks across the state line into South Carolina, since Georgia prohibited the sale of fireworks in the state. My Daddy and Granddaddy were like little kids at a candy store at those tent stores. Each of them loaded up on fire crackers, cherry bombs, sky rockets, flares, bottle rockets and sparklers. Days prior to the holiday, our neighborhood’s were testing grounds for lighting up the sky before the main shows took place downtown, at the mall or at Fort Gordon on the 4th of July. Pop, blam, boom were the sounds, that made the faint of heart run for cover and send out pets into a tailspin.
Each 4th of July we gathered as a family and watched a light-filled  sky show and listened to the patriotic tunes that accompanied the fireworks assent and descent. In unison  everyone looked towards the sky in awe and amazement of the colorful designs and displays from the fireworks in the sky.

What a great memory of the celebration of our independence and the sights and sounds that lit up the sky!
