50 Years Later…The Civil Rights Act of 1964

It has only been a mere half a century since equality and access for all was signed into law. The question that many still ponder is legislation relevant and does the struggle continue.

When then President Lyndon B. Johnson  signed The Civil Rights Act in 1964 it was surely a different time. Yet we look around us and African -Americans are still fighting to vote, be accepted in public spaces and places, obtain an education, and jobs. Until we arrive at a day and time where the core elements of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 are being upheld. The next 50 years must be better than the first 50 years.

It is my hope that I can see more positive changes in the name of equality and fairness.

Major Features of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

(Public Law 88-352)

Title I—Voting Rights
Barred unequal application of voter uirements, but did not abolish literacy tests sometimes used to disqualify African Americans and poor white voters.

Title II—Public Accommodations
Outlawed discrimination in hotels, motels, restaurants, theaters, and all other public accommodations engaged in interstate commerce; exempted private clubs without defining “private,” thereby allowing a loophole.

A period tells you that is that. With a semicolon you get a pleasant little feeling of expectancy ; there is more to come; read on; it will get clearer.
