Know Who You Are…Black Girls Rock!
I believe it is important to affirm who you are: Believer in Jesus Christ, black woman, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, niece, sister-in-law, Godmother, and friend. Writer, blogger, social influencer, life-long learner, mentor, speaker, leader, and visionary. Georgia born and raised, Florida resident, public administrator, college graduate, homeowner, information junkie, and foodie for life. These affirmation are just a few of the pieces of me!
This evening I proudly watched a spirited celebration of black women and girls via The Black Girls Rock (BGR)Awards show. As a salute to the role and work that black women and girls do in their communities or as celebrities, BGR shines a positive light on its honorees. Since 2006 Beverly Bond, CEO and founder of BGR took a slogan on a tee-shirt and made it a movement for the masses for women and girls.
BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. is 501(c)3 non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialog and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media.
BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc. continues to partner with BET Networks in the worldwide broadcast of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! The event continues to be a historic and monumental show highlighting the accomplishments of exceptional women of color who have made outstanding contributions in their careers, and who stand as inspirational and positive role models in their communities. http://www.bet.com/shows/black-girls-rock/about.html
It is refreshing to view a program like the BGR Awards that is overflowing with a positive images of girls and women that look like me. The BGR Awards are given in the areas of : M.A.D. (Making A Difference ) Girls, Community Activist, Young, Gifted and Black, Star Power, Humanitarian, Shot Caller, Rock Star and Living Legend.
Watching BGR Award show had me clapping my hands, smiling, shouting and shedding some tears of joy. Every moment and emotion shown helped to further my affirmations: Black Girls Rock, and I AM a Black Woman who Rocks!
