Lessons From A Legend

Last Wednesday, September 12, 2012, time on this side of the world stopped as Coach David Dupree went from glory to reward. The 88 year-old former sideline walker was the long-time leader of the Lucy Craft Laney High School football team.  For close to three decades, Coach Dupree built a reputation on taking young impressionable boys and helping them become influential young men with the game of football and education as the driving vehicles.

Coach Dupree touched the hearts and minds of so many, not just the athlete’s, but all students who walked the halls of  “Dear ‘ol Laney High”. In statue, Coach Dupree had a presence that made you know he meant business and it earned his a great measure of respect.

On the football field, Coach Dupree expected nothing less than the best from all of his players. From the smallest little tight end to the big defensive back, every player mattered and was apart of putting the “T” in Team. Wearing the Red, Gray, and white school colors, Coach Dupree exemplified “The Pride” of a Laney Wildcat and he wore it well.

Four years ago, Coach Dupree was honored with a naming ceremony, when the newly built football stadium was named after him. What a humbling moment to have all those days of sweat and hard work payoff with a place you could be proud of and show the essence of the what you valued in the playing of the game.

The Lessons From A Legend, Coach David Dupree live on in the foundation of football, the empowerment of education and the lasting legacy he left on and off the field of life.

Rest so peaceful Coach Dupree…

A period tells you that is that. With a semicolon you get a pleasant little feeling of expectancy ; there is more to come; read on; it will get clearer.
