Magic’s Milestone:20 Years Later, He is Still Here

Twenty years and ten days ago the history books open to a new chapter in the life of  Ervin “Magic” Johnson. The super-star forward stepped up to the podium at a press conference and shocked the world with these words,

“Good afternoon,” he said in a calm, but serious manner. “Because of the HIV virus that I have attained, I will have to retire from the Lakers today … I plan on going on living for a long time … I’m going to be a happy man.

“Sometimes we think only gay people can get it or it’s not going to happen to me. Here I am, saying it can happen to everybody. Even me, Magic Johnson.” (Ervin “Magic” Johnson, HIV Announcement, Nov.7, 1991)

Magic Johnson’s admission of his contraction of the HIV virus put a new face on the disease that had in the last decade been known as the white gay male condition. Now this mega athlete, five time NBAchampion with the Los Angeles Lakers, Magic Johnson found that his reckless living had caught up with him. Not to mention that he was six months into his marriage to his devoted wife, Cookie who was pregnant with their  child. As a result of Magic’s status he had to be concerned for the health of Cookie and the child. Cookie vowed to stay by Magic’s side as he faced his greatest opponent HIV.

Hearing that Magic had HIV, made many think what they were fearful of saying: How soon before he is dead. The HIV virus was a new disease that was taking prisoners and walking them to a death sentence. So no one expected that we would be here twenty years later in awe of Magic’s Milestone: 20 Years Later, He is Still Here.

As we have seen millions of victims to HIV/AIDS did a quick and painful death. Yet it is Magic who has appeared to have not missed a beat. Yes he left the sport of basketball and retired, but he did not sit down and wait to die. For Magic Johnson, it became Showtime, only this time he was on the stage of life as a champion in the fight for HIV/AIDS awareness and education. The  Magic Johnson Foundation, was  established to help provide testing and knowledge about HIV/AIDS that is taking the lives of all people. On the 20th anniversary of his announcement Magic gave a 1 million dollar check to his foundation. Magic has vowed to make HIV/AIDS  education and awareness his lifelong work towards finding a cure and helping others living with this disease.

Magic Johnson journey with HIV has been public and different in that he has not seemingly struggled with the disease. The medical team Magic Johnson has is world-class and has used the best of cocktails of medications to keep him healthy and alive. Today Magic will tell you the virus is “asleep” in his body and he keeps going due to medicines, exercise and a healthy diet.

Whatever the reason or timing, God has not seen fit to end the life of Magic Johnson. At 52, Magic has seemingly beat the odds and the naysayers.  It appears that Magic is living his life with HIV by exhibiting a strength and courage that many are left wondering how and why. As Magic’s Milestone: 20 Years Later, He is Still Here enters his next quarter of this game of life  we can only wish him well and say thanks for continuing to fight with his champion spirit.
