YoTrip-Words and Thoughts

A place and space for me to express my thoughts

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip, February 2, 2010-Mentoring Part II (Vol.2, Iss.1)

Mentor is defined by Dictionary.com as,”To serve as a trusted counselor or teacher, especially in occupational settings. A wise and trusted counselor or teacher, an influential senior sponsor or supporter.”

Last week after posting my Tuesday Thoughts on Mentoring, one of my sisters inquired if adults should have a mentor. I responded in the affirmative and let her know I would focus on the next level of adult mentoring this week.

Mentoring is usually thought of in the relationship between adults and our youth. This level of mentoring is vital to the growth and development of our next generation. Mentoring is also useful at the next level, as adults we need mentors in various aspects of our lives. I subscribe to the notion that we must value the concept of mentoring as a life-long journey.

Do you have someone that you look to for advice, guidance, and leadership? Is there someone you consider a “role model” or you like characteristics or qualities they possess? When you have to make major life decisions is there a person you must speak with to help you weigh your options? If you answered yes to these questions then you have that person in your life that bears the title of mentor. In some cases, you may have multiple mentors that you rely upon based on the situation or opportunity you are currently facing.

Let’s look at few types of mentors that we as adults find ourselves connected to on our life-long journey. One type of mentor is a personal mentor, that is that person I call the “big sister” or “big brother” type who helps you with self awareness, self-esteem, and self development. The personal mentor may advise you on relationships and family issues or may be that great listening ear you need in a time of distress. Personal mentors typically have a “tell-it-like-it is” outlook, and you know they will give it to you straight.

Another type of mentor is a business or professional mentor. The business or professional mentor is the person that guides you in the work or business environment. Some business or professional mentors maybe in a leadership role in your workplace or in an organization that you both are members of. The business or professional mentor can be thought of as the “role model” or person you would like to emulate in your career. When you need to plan, organize, and grow your business or in your professional development this type of mentor is there to help fill in the gaps. A business or professional mentor will encourage you and not allow you to quit when things get rough, let you cry when you are frustrated, and tell you about the “land mines” to avoid because they have “been there and done that” too often in their careers.

Adult to adult mentoring is valuable and a worthwhile exchange for the mentor and the mentee. The mentor has the opportunity to pour substance and know-how into the life of the mentee. The mentee looks to the mentor to help them in their decision-making, give them “tough love”, and be the voice of reason in stressful times.Whether your mentor is personal, business or professional they serve a purpose in helping you move forward in life.

Do you have someone you look to as a mentor to help teach and guide you? Are you a mentor to someone? Do you need a mentor? Just remember mentoring matters, to the giver and the reciever. MENTOR-Get one, be one and see how your life will change as you journey to a place called BETTER.
