A WORD OF THANKSGIVING

 

Today is the National Day of Thanksgiving here in the United States. All over the country people cooked, cleaned and connected over meals that covered tables and filled empty stomachs. Gathering of family, friends and folks took place  all in the name of Thanksgiving.

I like so many was blessed to be able to travel and join my family for all the fun, food, and fellowship associated with Thanksgiving. I visited with two different family members homes and it was great just to all be together. The food was incredible: Cornish Hens, turkey, ham, dressing, turnip greens, mac n’ cheese, fried and barbaque chicken, chitterlings, string beans, mixed peas, potato salad, corn pudding, apple cobbler, carrot cake, sweet potato pie,  and red velvet cake.

We laugh and love so much, it was a joy. We watched Football games, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (a classic) and then 25th Anniversary for Micheal Jackson‘s BAD. What a great day for offering a word of Thanksgiving. I have so much to be thankful and grateful for, I just cannot tell it all. 

I would also like to take this time to offer a word of Thanksgiving for all of the people who have supported YoTrip-Words and Thoughts/Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip/Thursday Thinking by YoTrip as I seek to leave my footprints on the world.

Let us all continue in the spirit of Thanksgiving for this day and beyond!

November is National Adoption Month and it is such a selfless act to open your heart, your home, and your head to another person. The love, support, joy and completeness that families give to children by bringing them into their families is a beautiful thing. I salute the countless numbers of people who adopted and understand the power making the difference in the life of others.

A Vital Resource To Stroke Victims: The Caregivers

The victim of a stroke need someone to help them as they recover and heal from the affects of their stroke. The caregiver is the person who provides care, concern and compassion to the stroke victim. Those who provide assistance give of themselves to  ensure the stroke victim, has the things they need on their journey to recovery.

Being a caregiver requires patience and persistence when interacting  with both the stroke victims and other resources. Please read and share the information below.

 

Caregivers/family members play a prominent role throughout the post-stroke recovery process. Caregivers/family members are essential to successful home care and too often are ignored. Caring for stroke survivors at home can cause high levels of emotional, mental and physical stress. In addition to distress, disruption of employment and family life makes caregiving very challenging. Family caregivers can promote positive post-stroke recovery outcomes; however, they need to care for themselves as well. Post-stroke recovery varies for each person; even if the stroke survivor returns to work and maintains a large amount of autonomy, family members may play a bigger role in the stroke survivor’s live than before the stroke.

Caregivers/family members of stroke survivors: You are not alone. National Stroke Association is dedicated to providing educational programs and resources to help you navigate the challenging post-stroke recovery journey.

Caregivers/family members may:

  • Assist with doctor’s appointments, medications, and exercises.

  • Manage financial matters and transportation.

  • Provide the stroke survivor with physical, mental and emotional support.

  • Assist the stroke survivor with daily activities such as personal care and hygiene.

  • Plan out the stroke survivor’s care, including setting routines and managing the care team.

  • Assess stroke survivor’s medical needs, communicate with healthcare professionals and advocate (medically) for the stroke survivor.

POET’S NEVER DIE

Our words are lasting like the memories in the corners of our mind

What we share is worthy of pause by all who encounter our talents

What we express goes on,lives on, moves on but more importantly stays on

The paper,  the pen, the mind of the reader, and the heart of those touched by the words

They just get worn, like your favorite pair of shoes, they get weary, like a fighter at his last round who feels like giving up

Yet what keeps us, makes us appealing for the young and old alike

Consider the great artist who are dangerous with their stokes of the pen

Still their stories are picked up off of the shelves or the  subject of Google searches

This post is in celebration of National Poetry Month during the month of April. Miss Zora Neale Hourston and Dr. Maya Angelou are two of my “sheroes” for being women who epitomize making your own way. Both Miss Zora and Dr. Maya set the pace for their contemporaries to try to keep up. A dear friend of mine Publisher,author,poet and  ”every woman”, Katandra  Shanel Jackson Taylor of  Freedom Ink Publishing http://www.freedomink365.com/  saw a picture of me at an event and inspired me to pen this post.  Here is the poetic piece, enjoy!

Miss Zora Meets Dr.Maya

Two sassy southern belle’s meet on a dusty road

Walking in purpose and  passion as they carry their load

I can almost hear them as they speak and share their stories

Shouting, jumping for joy and sharing in each others glories

“I Won’t Take Nothing For My Journey” Dr. Maya tells all

How about those “Mules and Men” back at her Miss Zora recalls

Walking along their path two women find their souls are intertwined

“Dust Tracks On The Road’ Miss Zora exclaims from deep within

“I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings” Dr.Maya  shares her life with her pen

These two writers,poets, authors, educated women equipped with their own way of thinking  and mind

Make no mistake Miss Zora and Dr.Maya can be called two strong women and truly one of a kind.

Advocate For Justice-Ida B. Wells

Ida B. Wells was born a slave in 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Her father, James, was a carpenter and her mother, Elizabeth, was a famous cook. Both parents were literate and taught Ida how to read at a young age. She was surrounded by political activists and grew up with a sense of hope about the possibilities of former slaves within the American society. Both parents died, along with an infant brother, during the 1878 yellow fever epidemic when Ida was 16 years old. At that young age, she assumed the responsibility of rearing her five younger brothers and sisters.

She soon became a teacher in order to earn money for the family and eventually ended up working in Memphis. While there, one day changed her life forever. She has accustomed to riding the train in whatever seat she chose. In 1883, she sued the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad because they forbade her from sitting in the ladies coach subsequently wrote and article about the experience. The success of her article about the ease influenced her career change to journalist.

As injustices against former slaves raged throughout the South and a reign of terror began, Wells’ sense of indignation and quest for justice was fueled. She decided to use her pen to expose the motives behind the violence. Lynching had become one of the main tactics in the strategy to terrorize blacks, and exposing its real purpose became the target of her crusade for justice. When three of her male friends, who were upstanding, law-abiding, successful businessmen (in direct competition with white businessmen), were lynched on the pretext of a crime they did not commit, Wells wrote about the situation with a clarity and forcefulness that riveted the attention of both blacks and whites. Her major contention that lynchings were a systematic attempt to subordinate the black community was incendiary.  To read the complete story go to: http://www.idabwells.org/
