A Historic Institution Of Higher Learning: Paine College

Paine College Historic District, in Augusta, Georgia, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 26, 2012. Representing one of the few institutions of higher education created by a biracial board of trustees in Georgia for African-American students, Paine College Historic District was found historically important on the state level. Important for its role in education and African American heritage, the event was marked by a statement from Paine College President George C. Bradley, who wrote, “This is a major milestone in the college’s 131 years of existence, and we look forward to making additional milestones and accomplishments in the legacy of Paine College.”….

Founded in 1882 by trustees from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MEC-S)and the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America (CEMC) with the goal of educating African-American youth, the institution was, from the beginning, a coeducational school.  Paine College continues to serve its original purpose of providing quality education and remains associated with the successor denominations of the founding churches. http://1.usa.gov/X6IUfW

How do you celebrate a woman who through an unselfish act changed a course of history? You posthumously honor her legacy with a “forever” United States postage stamp. On February 4, 2013, what would have been Miss Rosa Park’s 100th birthday, a larger than life rendering of the postage stamp was unveiled at the steps of the infamous segregated Montgomery, Alabama bus.  Additionally, there were ceremonies held in several cities in the great state of Michigan.

Over 60 years ago, Miss Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger, as it was customary for Negros when the bus filled and seats were needed for white bus riders. Miss Rosa’s actions was central to the in the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement,

Her defiance and the ensuing black boycott of the city bus system helped the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. rise to national prominence.

“This is being done in sight of the bus where future generations can sit in a seat where Rosa Parks sat and refused to budge and in a seat where the world was changed,” U.S. Sen. Carl Levin said before he and U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a fellow Democrat, pulled the curtain to reveal the Rosa Parks Forever Stamp, which bears her 1950’s likeness. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/new-stamp-honors-rosa-parks-courage-article-1.1256087#ixzz2K5iCjYgm

Thank you Miss Rosa Parks we have access because you were courageous enough to sit which was the ultimate way to take a stand. To help keep this legacy alive go to http://rosaparks.org/

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for December 27, 2012-KWANZAA A Cultural Celebration (Vol.12, Iss.2)

Kwanzaa- A Cultural Celebration

Kwanzaa is an African American cultural holiday. The name comes from Swahili “mutanda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits”.

First fruits celebrations originate from ancient Egypt and Nubia. They were the inspiration for the modern version of Kwanzaa founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, a time of African-Americans‘ struggle for civil rights.

Kwanzaa is occurs between Dec 26 and Jan 1, honouring human dignity, community, culture and people’s relationship with the environment. Respect is paid to the ancestors and new commitments to one’s community are taken on. Each day of the festival focuses on a different one of seven values including Umoja (Unity), Kujichaguilia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

During the festival homes, churches and places for communal gathering are decorated in black, red and green signifying future and hope. On Dec 31 a big feast (Karamu) takes place which is usually a product of joint communal effort. http://bit.ly/Ttaq7D

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for November 22, 2012-A Word Of Thanksgiving (Vol.11, Iss.3)

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving (Photo credit: Calsidyrose)

A WORD OF THANKSGIVING

Today is the National Day of Thanksgiving here in the United States. All over the country people cooked, cleaned and connected over meals that covered tables and filled empty stomachs. Gathering of family, friends and folks took place  all in the name of Thanksgiving.

I like so many was blessed to be able to travel and join my family for all the fun, food, and fellowship associated with Thanksgiving. I visited with two different family members homes and it was great just to all be together. The food was incredible: Cornish Hens, turkey, ham, dressing, turnip greens, mac n’ cheese, fried and barbaque chicken, chitterlings, string beans, mixed peas, potato salad, corn pudding, apple cobbler, carrot cake, sweet potato pie,  and red velvet cake.

We laugh and love so much, it was a joy. We watched Football games, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (a classic) and then 25th Anniversary for Micheal Jackson‘s BAD. What a great day for offering a word of Thanksgiving. I have so much to be thankful and grateful for, I just cannot tell it all.

I would also like to take this time to offer a word of Thanksgiving for all of the people who have supported YoTrip-Words and Thoughts/Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip/Thursday Thinking by YoTrip as I seek to leave my footprints on the world.

Let us all continue in the spirit of Thanksgiving for this day and beyond!

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for 11/13/12-The Air We Breathe (Vol.11, Iss.2)

Enlarged view of lung tissue showing the diffe...

Enlarged view of lung tissue showing the difference between healthy lung and COPD (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Air We Breathe

November is National COPD Awareness Month and we should not take the air we breathe for granted. Our lifeline is tied directly to the air we breathe,

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a serious lung disease which makes it hard to breathe. Also known by other names, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, COPD is now the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and also causes long-term disability.

The number of people who have COPD is on the rise — more than 12 million are currently diagnosed with it. And it is estimated that another 12 million may have COPD but not realize it.

If you or someone you know has symptoms such as chronic coughing, shortness of breath or wheezing, see your doctor or health care provider for a simple breathing test. By taking steps now, and talking with your doctor or health care provider about treatment options, you can breathe better and enjoy a more active life.

Did You Know?

  • COPD is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and causes serious, long-term disability
  • COPD kills more than 120,000 Americans each year. That’s one death every 4 minutes
  • More than 12 million people are diagnosed with COPD
  • An additional 12 million likely have COPD and don’t even know it http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/lung/copd/index.htm

Keep the people impacted by Hurricane Sandy in your thoughts and prayers.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 10/11/12 Guest Post by Dr. Darcova Triplett, STRUT FOR A CURE CELEBRATIONS (Vol.10, Iss.2)

STRUT FOR A CURE CELEBRATIONS

Guest Post by Dr. Darcova Triplett

Dr. Darcova Triplett  is the Editor-in-Chief of STRUT! The Magazine. This magazine was created to provide the platform for women to walk in confidence, competence and conviction. What started out as a magazine has transformed into a movement that empowers women to explore their gifts and talents and then use them to positively influence and impact the world. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Triplett will be recognized in history as the brainchild for STRUT FOR A CURE. Under the direction of Dr. Triplett, on Saturday, October 6, 2012, supporters in Nevada, California, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and New York will simultaneously declare victory over this disease that directly affects 1 in 8 women. STRUT FOR A CURE has been created to educate women about this devastating disease that carries the following statistics:

1)      For women in the United States of America, breast cancer is the most common cancer.

2)      African American women under the age of 45 are more likely than any other ethnic group to develop and die from breast cancer.

3)      About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

STRUT FOR A CURE stands on the shoulders of Annie Doris Brown and Bieace Brown- King. Through this endeavor, Dr. Triplett celebrates the life of her grandmother, Annie Doris Brown, who traded in her PINK boxing gloves for Angel Wings in 2010. She also supports her mother, Bieace Brown- King, who is a one year breast cancer Survivor. “Watching that disease spread through my grandmother’s body was overwhelming. And when my mother was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, I felt compelled to do something,” proclaims Darcova. Thus, STRUT FOR A CURE. When Dr. Triplett reached out to family and close friends throughout the United States of America, they eagerly took on the vision and agreed to serve as hostesses. Thanks to Candice Lockhart Smith (California), Keisha Clark  (Louisiana), Yolanda Triplett and Wanda Winston (Florida), Trinette Collier (Georgia) and La Verne Newton (New York), STRUT FOR A CURE is destined to reach the masses.

Monetary contributions collected during the STRUT FOR A CURE extravaganza will be donated to Mothers, Daughters and Sisters Against Breast Cancer, Inc. where the focus is on helping uninsured and underinsured women pay for mammograms. Dr. Triplett is on the Board of Directors for this nonprofit organization and her mother, Bieace Brown-King, is the Co-Founder.

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for September 11, 2012- FOREVER HEROES (Vol.9, Iss.2)

911 Hero's

911 Hero’s (Photo credit: fauxto_digit)

FOREVER HEROES

I can’t even imagine or see with my mind’s eye

After all these years still stuck with the one word…WHY!

Barreling through the sky, using the airways to attack

Caught totally off guard you can’t fight back

Utter chaos erupts at the drop of a dime

Comes at you fast in little or no time

Terror rears it ugly head

Before you know it countless numbers are dead

In the truest sense of service, the forever heroes steps in

Doing their part to help protect and defend

Working without cease dedicated to the cause

Annually we reflect, remember and pause

To lift up the countless whose lives were lost

And you the Forever Heroes, giving unselfishly at all cost

Our lives and our living changed that day

Barriers of protection, security checks became the way

Forever Heroes we say thank you for giving it your all

On point, heard bell, responded and answered the call.

Thank you for then, and thank you now, thank you Forever Heroes.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for August 2, 2012- Living Her Life Like It’s Golden…Gabby Douglas

Living Her Life Like It’s Golden…Gabby Douglas

"I've been meditating on scriptures sayin...

“I’ve been meditating on scriptures saying be confident in this. And, you know, the bible really helps me so I was very confident.” -Gabby Douglas, photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images (Photo credit: On Being)

Douglas said she had felt confident all along that she would win.

“It was just an amazing feeling,” she said, giggling. “I was just like, Believe, don’t fear, believe.”

Just five months ago, Martha Karolyi, the coordinator of the women’s national team, did not think Douglas had what it took to be an Olympian. She lacked confidence and focus, Karolyi said, even as recently as a few weeks ago.

Douglas disagreed. As this year went on, she thought more and more that she could make the London Games — and win. After sacrificing so much, she had no other choice but to push forward, she said. http://nyti.ms/RkyOon

Gabby Douglas has shown the world that when others count you out, if you believe in yourself and your ability to win, there is nothing that can stop you on your path to greatness. The Olympic two-time gold medalist, is living her life-like its golden and she is shining  bright for all the world to see. Congratulations Gabrielle “Gabby” Douglas, your winning spirit and heart of gold shows in your dedication to the sport and are one of the grand representatives of Team USA!
