YoTrip Chooses to LIVE LIFE 4/16/13

Great day in the morning folks! Decide right now to LIVE your life in the spirit of peace. #GDMF374

Chooses To LIVE LIFE

In the mist of all this darkness, disaster, and doom
I choose to LIVE and get beyond the gloom
It is so easy to soak it up and be consumed with it all
Now is the time to LIVE and not fold and fall
We must now take an action and that is to LIVE
Make it your business to go on and give
Never will we get this time to LIVE over again
So just choose life and go right on and win
We can make a thousand excuses and stay stuck in place
Or we can move now and start running the LIFE race
So LIVE life for the ones who gave LIFE without a reason
Take if from me now is the LIVE LIFE season.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 2/7/13-Tice Davids & The Underground Railroad

Origin of the Term Underground Railroad

The origins of the Underground Railroad go back before the 18th century, but the terminology dates to around 1831. One version states that an enslaved, Tice Davids, crossed the Ohio River in the vicinity of Ripley, Ohio, a ferryboat ride from the slave state of Kentucky, to escape from his owner. As Tice Davids swam the river, his owner kept him in sight as he pursued him in a small rowboat. He could see Tice’s head bobbling in the river, but once Tice reached the Ohio side, he was lost from view. His owner searched diligently around Ripley, “a town that hated slavery,” but was unable to find his human property. Bewildered and tuckered out, the slave owner could only conclude that Tice Davids “must have gone on an underground road.”

It was subsequent to this incident that those conspirators involved in the escape of Tice Davis, and others, began to use such terms as conductors, firemen, brakemen, stationmaster, depots/stations, and such phrases as “catching the next train” to describe their clandestine, though morally driven, efforts in assisting refugees to escape a morally bankrupted slave-owning South. The terminology used was in line with the country’s early use of steam to propel passenger-carrying vehicles, in this case the railroads. http://www.undergroundrailroadexperience.cuny.edu/origin.html

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for 1/8/13-January is Thyroid Awareness Month (Vol.1, Iss.2)

Overview of the thyroid system (See Wikipedia:...

Overview of the thyroid system (See Wikipedia:Thyroid). To discuss image, please see Talk:Human body diagrams (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Understanding the Thyroid

January is Thyroid Awareness month. The thyroid is a body part that is small in size but large in its functionality. As a center for how the body operates, the thyroid has the ability to work normally or it can be under active (Hypothyroidism) or overactive (Hyperthyroidism). All month-long there will be post that encourage, educate, enlighten and empower the readers regarding the thyroid.

The thyroid gland is an important endocrine gland that controls the body’s metabolism. It is a small butterfly shaped gland located in the front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland produces the hormones tetraiodothyronine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Together these hormones regulate how your cells use energy. The pathways by which cells use energy is called metabolism. Your body’s general metabolism determines blood pressure, heart rate, and weight.

Hypothyroidism is a condition where your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. Low levels of thyroid hormone interfere with the body’s ability to perform normal metabolic functions such as efficient use of energy from food products, regulation of many chemical reactions in the body, and maintenance of healthy cells, bones and muscles, to name a few..

There is no known prevention for hypothyroidism, nor is there a cure. Once you have it, you have it for life. http://bit.ly/UIJR2z

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for December 27, 2012-KWANZAA A Cultural Celebration (Vol.12, Iss.2)

Kwanzaa- A Cultural Celebration

Kwanzaa is an African American cultural holiday. The name comes from Swahili “mutanda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits”.

First fruits celebrations originate from ancient Egypt and Nubia. They were the inspiration for the modern version of Kwanzaa founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, a time of African-Americans‘ struggle for civil rights.

Kwanzaa is occurs between Dec 26 and Jan 1, honouring human dignity, community, culture and people’s relationship with the environment. Respect is paid to the ancestors and new commitments to one’s community are taken on. Each day of the festival focuses on a different one of seven values including Umoja (Unity), Kujichaguilia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

During the festival homes, churches and places for communal gathering are decorated in black, red and green signifying future and hope. On Dec 31 a big feast (Karamu) takes place which is usually a product of joint communal effort. http://bit.ly/Ttaq7D

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for October 16, 2012-The Silence Must Be Broken, Men And Breast Cancer (Vol.10, Iss.3)

The Silence Must Be Broken, Men And Breast Cancer

The face of breast cancer has historically been that of women, lately there has been an increase in the number of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer. The silence must be broken on men and breast cancer. Now more than ever the rising number of men who are facing breast cancer, is a call to continue to bring about awareness to all who are affected by this disease.

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, there will be approximately 2,190 new cases and 410 deaths due to male breast cancer in 2012. While the majority of breast cancer victims are women, there are still 1.2 men out of every 100,000 that will be diagnosed with the disease.

While survival rates are about the same for both genders, men are often diagnosed at a later age because most men don’t recognize or complain about the symptoms.

The main types of breast cancer are the same for men and women, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. About 75 percent of the cases start in the cells lining the milk ducts and are known as ductal carcinomas. The other 25 percent are lobular carcinomas, which are cancers that begin in the lobules, or milk-producing glands. However, the majority of male breast cancer are known as infiltrating ductal carcinomas (IDC), meaning they have spread outside the duct and into the surrounding tissues.

Age is a major risk factor for male breast cancers, with the majority of cases diagnosed in men ages 65 to 75, Susan G. Komen for the Cure reported. In addition, women and men who inherited a BRCA2 gene mutation are at a higher risk, with seven percent of these men going on to develop breast cancer by the age of 70. Other risk factors include heavy alcohol use, chronic liver disease and obesity. Some hormone drugs used to treat prostate cancer and exposure to large amounts of radiation can also be a factor. http://cbsn.ws/SZN5XD

In the fight for bringing about more education, empowerment and encouragement for breast cancer awareness and how it affects men is the right reason to let the silence be broken on men and breast cancer.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 10/11/12 Guest Post by Dr. Darcova Triplett, STRUT FOR A CURE CELEBRATIONS (Vol.10, Iss.2)

STRUT FOR A CURE CELEBRATIONS

Guest Post by Dr. Darcova Triplett

Dr. Darcova Triplett  is the Editor-in-Chief of STRUT! The Magazine. This magazine was created to provide the platform for women to walk in confidence, competence and conviction. What started out as a magazine has transformed into a movement that empowers women to explore their gifts and talents and then use them to positively influence and impact the world. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Triplett will be recognized in history as the brainchild for STRUT FOR A CURE. Under the direction of Dr. Triplett, on Saturday, October 6, 2012, supporters in Nevada, California, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia and New York will simultaneously declare victory over this disease that directly affects 1 in 8 women. STRUT FOR A CURE has been created to educate women about this devastating disease that carries the following statistics:

1)      For women in the United States of America, breast cancer is the most common cancer.

2)      African American women under the age of 45 are more likely than any other ethnic group to develop and die from breast cancer.

3)      About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer.

STRUT FOR A CURE stands on the shoulders of Annie Doris Brown and Bieace Brown- King. Through this endeavor, Dr. Triplett celebrates the life of her grandmother, Annie Doris Brown, who traded in her PINK boxing gloves for Angel Wings in 2010. She also supports her mother, Bieace Brown- King, who is a one year breast cancer Survivor. “Watching that disease spread through my grandmother’s body was overwhelming. And when my mother was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer, I felt compelled to do something,” proclaims Darcova. Thus, STRUT FOR A CURE. When Dr. Triplett reached out to family and close friends throughout the United States of America, they eagerly took on the vision and agreed to serve as hostesses. Thanks to Candice Lockhart Smith (California), Keisha Clark  (Louisiana), Yolanda Triplett and Wanda Winston (Florida), Trinette Collier (Georgia) and La Verne Newton (New York), STRUT FOR A CURE is destined to reach the masses.

Monetary contributions collected during the STRUT FOR A CURE extravaganza will be donated to Mothers, Daughters and Sisters Against Breast Cancer, Inc. where the focus is on helping uninsured and underinsured women pay for mammograms. Dr. Triplett is on the Board of Directors for this nonprofit organization and her mother, Bieace Brown-King, is the Co-Founder.
