Write On, Already… National Novel Writing Month

Since 1999 a challenge has been set for those who care to participate and attempt to write a novel during the month of November. It is called the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) event. It is a great  time to put your skills to the test and see if you can produce a novel.

If you have an interest and want to participate you still have 15 days to get that novel written. If it sounds like a tall order for you there are online as well as local support in many cities and states to help keep you encouraged.

I salute and honor any one who has joined the challenge and stayed the course, even if they did not write 50,000 words.

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000-word (approximately 175-page) novel by 11:59:59 PM on November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and—when the thing is done—the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.

Annual participant/winner totals 1999: 21 participants and six winners

2000: 140 participants and 29 winners

2001: 5000 participants and more than 700 winners

2002: 13,500 participants and around 2,100 winners

2003: 25,500 participants and about 3,500 winners

2004: 42,000 participants and just shy of 6,000 winners

2005: 59,000 participants and 9,769 winners

2006: 79,813 participants and 12,948 winners

2007: 101,510 participants and 15,333 winners

2008: 119,301participants and 21,683 winners

2009: 167,150 participants and 32,178 winners

2010: 200,500 participants and 37,500 winners

2011: 256,618 participants and 36,843 winners

Poetry Month is in April!

Poetry Month is in April! (Photo credit: Manchester Library)

For as long as I can remember since I was a wee wonder, a little child

Putting words on paper would always make me smile

The Poet in Me

Drives my need to express my feelings on this and that

The Poet in Me

Let’s me be simplistic

The Poet in Me

Allows me to be complex

The Poet in Me

Can be tough as nails

The Poet in Me

Can soft as a baby’s skin

The Poet in Me

Goes deep as the oceans floor

The Poet in me

Can be shallow like the water’s edge

The Poet in me

Bears all from the depths of my soul

The Poet in me

Shutdown and hides when life takes it toll

The Poet in me

Loves the power of words

The Poet in me

Hates the abuse of words

The Poet in me

Respects creative expression

The Poet in me

Wakes each day with a desire to write

The Poet in me

True to my gift, my craft

The Poet in me

Is and will always be! 4/5/12

LIVE THE DREAM

“Yesterday we dared to dream, today we continue to find ways to live the dream.”~YoTrip

Over the last few days the hopes and dreams of the late, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were recited by the young and old, black and white, the poor and rich all over the nation. It is the words that the great orator, Dr. King that spoke of a time when we lived in harmony and equality was available for all men. For  last forty years since Dr. King’s death, we have heard the message  ”dare to dream” and then find ways to Live the Dream. Dr. King believed that his dreams were within reach and could be achieved by the efforts of all people.

Live the Dream is a call to action that all can choose to embrace. How do you view the world? Where do you see yourself in the world? What can you do to make the world better? Why is it important for you to Live the Dream? When will you start to do your part to Live the Dream? These questions are posed to help you put your thinking cap on and let your mind go to work.

Today and always find the path to Live the Dream by living your dreams. Let your dreams be your guide, your driver, your reason for seeking to be and do more. Live the Dream and know that when you dream, you keep your mind open to the infinite opportunities waiting for you on the horizon. To Live the Dream gives honor to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Eight

JUST EIGHT THINGS…
LIVE
1.You were born to live
2.Dying is not a better option
LAUGH
3.Find something to trigger your inner and outter funny
4.Release all those happy feelings
LOVE
5. It beats spreading hate
6.It still makes the world go around
LEARN
7. Always stay open to the opportunity to know new things
8. It stimulates your mind
The more I keep hearing these four words, the more I realize how important they should be in our daily activity. In this world that is pushing us, pulling us, patting us up and down we all can take some time of personal insight and LIVE more, LAUGH more, LOVE more, and LEARN more! I am vowing to incorporate these four L’s into my way of existing.
Often we search for a complex solutions, when we just need to see the resolve in the simple things. As I sat and looked at the eight things, I see them as interchangeable in any of the four areas. Let me challenge you: For the next week make it your focus to find ways to LIVE better, LAUGH better, LOVE better, and LEARN better. Record how you were able to accomplish these things and if you think it will help someone do not be afraid to share (knowledge is power!).
I am getting excited and I am looking forward to some great results. So start now the four L’s are waiting on you…

My Silence Speaks Volumes

There are times when it is best to follow the rules of thinking before speaking. The world has been in a place of pause for the last 46 days as we watched intently or from a distance the Capital Murder trial for Casey Marie Anthony in the senseless death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.  Today a jury of 12 people found Casey “not guilty” of the murder charge and child neglect or abuse. The raw emotions of the verdict and all of the opinions of the sideline attorney’s (myself included) leads me to not offer up my mixture of emotions on this subject.

At this point I am going to say that the lost of Caylee Marie Anthony is greater than any victory of justice that was felt by the defense team of Casey Marie Anthony. Until I can say more I am simply choosing to let MY SILENCE SPEAK VOLUMES!

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for June 28, 2011-Success vs. Significance (Vol.3, Iss.4)

SUCCESS (magazine)

Image via Wikipedia

Success vs. Significance

Recently I was asked how do I define SUCCESS.  I had to admit to the person that I do not prescribe to the notion of SUCCESS but I was seeking SIGNIFICANCE.

suc·cess
n.1. The achievement of something desired, planned, or
attempted: attributed their success in business to hard
work.

2. a. The gaining of fame or prosperity: an artist spoiled by success.

b. The extent of such gain.
3. One that is successful: The plan was a success.
4. Obsolete A result or an outcome.
sig·nif·i·cant
// adj.

1. Having or expressing a meaning; meaningful.
2. Having or expressing a covert meaning; suggestive:
a significant glance. See Synonyms at expressive.
3. Having or likely to have a major effect; important: a significant change in the tax laws.
4. Fairly large in amount or quantity: significant casualties; no significant
opposition.
5. Statistics Of or relating to observations or
occurrences that are too closely correlated to be attributed to chance and
therefore indicate a systematic relationship.
As I see it SUCCESS, is fleeting it comes and it goes in the eyes, the hearts and minds of people. Society sees SUCCESS as how much money did a person make. The more you make the more people expect you to make and they equate your SUCCESS with monetary prosperity. SUCCESS is always made to be seen as something larger or growing. The larger than life view of SUCCESS puts people on pedestals and builds them up. Just as people are elevated up in the notion of SUCCESS, they can tumble and fall in a matter of moments or minutes. The moment people, places, and possessions feel like you have not made enough or the spotlight on you is fading then your SUCCESS light fades.
I seek to be SIGNIFICANT vs. SUCCESS. For me SIGNIFICANCE is lasting and makes an impression. SIGNIFICANCE is solid, it will not come and go, it has staying power. SIGNIFICANCE for me is built on making a difference by being different, by doing different, by seeing different. To be SIGNIFICANT you can do a big or a small thing and have an impact. When you make an impact on people, places or possessions, the SIGNIFICANCE in you is at work. SIGNIFICANCE can be attained by all who seek to have it in their lives by recognizing the importance and meaning you are wanting to convey.
SUCCESS will always be something that society pushes as a marker for having “made it” or “making it” in the world. SIGNIFICANCE is ordered by what you make it, not by what you make. To be viewed as the image of SUCCESS or SIGNIFICANCE is based on what a person wants in life and living. SUCCESS is based on what you gained and obtain, and SIGNIFICANCE is built on what you can maintain and sustain in this journey called life.
Are you seeking SUCCESS or are you seeking SIGNIFICANCE?
“Some people seek to successful in life, but I seek to be significant in life everyday, in every way making a difference.” ~~YoTrip
