What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”?

I am a 2 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed in 2011, nothing mattered to me but my fight to conquer the cancer that was trying to take over my body. I focus on living and trusting in the Lord to get me through it. As a result I am now cancer free and I promised the Lord I would spend the rest of my life telling others how good God is!

I want people to know that nothing beats having faith in God. I understand that tomorrow is not promised. I live with the believe in a win/win situation. If I die, I will go to be with the Lord. If I live I will get to be here with my friends and family to impact the world.

I give God all the glory.

Quvenzhane Wallis History-Making Little Giant

Quvenzhane Kwe-VEN-zhan-nay,  and means “fairy” in Swahili. Friends and family call her “Nazie” for short.  Quvenzhane is a charming and precious little girl who has warmed the heart of millions as she became the history-making little giant after receiving an Oscar nomination for her role in “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, at the age of nine. Quvenzhane  made history when she became  the youngest Best Actress nominee. At the tender age of five, she audition for  and garnered the role in “Beast of the Southern Wild”. Quvenzhane, plays “Hushpuppy“  a little daring young girl dealing with natural disaster and a dying father.

The talented history-making little giant, Quvenzhane, was born in Houma, Louisiana, the daughter of Qulyndreia, a teacher, and Venjie Wallis, Sr., a truck driver. ”Quven”, the first part of her name, combines her parents’ first names, while her mother has stated that zhané means “fairy” in Swahili. http://bit.ly/Wq5MN2

The Oscar buzz and her skills in “Beast of the Southern Wild”, has landed Quvenzhane in the next production of “Annie” as well as you can see her in a film short “Bone Shaker”, and a feature film “Twelve Years A Slave”. Quvenzhane Wallis is a history-making little giant who has also made her presence known. Watching Quvenzhane on the red carpet at the Oscars was beautiful, seeing her with Academy Award winner Halle Berry, was priceless. For her accomplishments to this point in her life, Quvenzhane  is worthy of a round of applause and honor, she has truly earned it. The best is yet to come for Quvenzhane Wallis, her star is shining so bright!

The 100 Day SMART GOAL CHALLENGE   "The 100 Day SMART Goal Challenge"

Last week I made a stop in your track discovery. As I finished up my daily devotion from my YouVersion app on my phone, I was congratulated for completing my 265th day of study. It hit me…We had 100 days left in the year before we embarked on 2013.

Later that morning I had a conversation with a person who was turning 40 soon and was concerned that she did not know what she wanted to be when she grew up. I told her she was going to have to “represent” to join the 4.0 club! I then went into analyze mode and began to question her about what she like, loved and would do if she could and not worry about failing. The rapid line of questioning stunned her and then she became silent. Then offered that she needed help with establishing a goal. I said okay and then  she left my office . I went to Google and added Goal setting to the search box. I pulled up some information  and went looking for her in her work area. I left the papers in her chair and returned to my office.

Later that evening while out with friends, it came to me. I needed to do something significant in the 100 days to come. I then shared this with Dr. Loretta Faith Harris. I am going to establish an event to help others achieve their goal within the next 100 days. She smiled and I was ready to get home and let my fingers catch up with my mind.

I went to social media (my Facebook page) and created an event page. I decided to call the event, THE 100 DAY SMART GOAL CHALLENGE. I always thought of what I had learned in Goal Setting workshops and lessons. When you determined a GOAL you needed to make it SMART. The SMART acronym is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. This event would gather people who all want to accomplish something by January 1, 2013.  I was hyped and hoped I could get my Facebook  friends to come aboard and join the movement.  See the information below. Come on aboard and join us! #100Day #SMARTGOAL

The 100 Day SMART Goal Challenge is an opportunity for you to establish a task (large or small) and take the steps necessary to complete it by January 1, 2013. The “100 Day SMART Goal Challenge” event is a collective place where those who join can come together collectively as Accountability Partners to encourage and empower their selves and others. http://www.facebook.com/events/444796945573132/

Food and fun for a worthy cause.
Date:
Mon, 1834-11-17

On this date we celebrate the birth of Nancy Green in 1834. She was a Black storyteller and one of the first black corporate models in the United States.

The world knew her as “Aunt Jemima,” but her given name was Nancy Green. The famous Aunt Jemima recipe was not her recipe but she became the advertising world’s first living trademark.

Miss Green was born a slave in Montgomery County, Kentucky. Chris Rutt, a newspaperman, and Charles Underwood bought the Pearl Milling Company and had the original idea of developing and packaging a ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour. To survive in a highly competitive business, the men needed an image for their product.

In 1889, Rutt attended a vaudeville show where he heard a catchy tune called “Aunt Jemima” sung by a blackface performer who was wearing an apron and bandanna headband. He decided to call their pancake flour “Aunt Jemima.”

Rutt and Underwood were broke, so in 1890, they sold the formula to the R.T. Davis Milling Company. Mr. Davis began looking for a Black woman to employ as a living trademark for his product, and he found Nancy Green in Chicago. She was 56 years old. The Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix was introduced in St. Joseph, MO. Read more on the history of Aunt Jemima go to: http://www.aaregistry.org/historic_events/view/nancy-green-original-aunt-jemima

Tuesday Thinking by YoTrip for June 14, 2011-From Castaways to Champions (Vol.3, Iss.2)

Dirk Nowitzki playing with the Dallas Mavericks

From Castaways to Champions

The Dallas Mavericks became the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2011 Champions after defeating the Miami Heat. The newly crowned champions were not favored to win or even be a contender for the coveted hardware. This Dallas Mavericks team lead by the German power forward, Dirk  Nowitzki  with the masterful shooting range, poise, and patience had to work hard to win. Instead of counting the Dallas Mavericks in, sports analyst and the naysayers were confident this team did not stand a chance against the three-pong threat of Miami’s Dwayne Wade, Lebron James and Chris Bosch.  Beyond the loyalty of their fans , the Dallas Mavericks had few who believed they could or would rise to the occassion and go from castaways to champions.

The Dallas Mavericks team has only been in the league 30 years and has come up short when it comes to winning a title. The legacy of the Los Angeles Lakers for the last several years as the team to beat out of the Western conference has found the Mavericks and other teams standing on the sidelines instead of in the spotlight. This year would prove to be different for Dallas as they found the heart and the will to raise their level of play pass being castaways and onto being champions. The 2011 NBA Finals was the place and the time for the Mavericks to show the world that this team was a team ready to move into the spotlight and take home the crown.

Castaways is a term that was befitting of this Dallas Maverick‘s team who surrounds the All-Star Dirk Nowitzki. The supporting cast of the Dallas Mavericks is  not full of soaring superstars, but of a group of talented players who showed drive, determination and diligence. Seven of the Mavericks fifteen players have ten or more years in the league. Guards Jason Terry and JJ Barea put on three-point clinics as they found the hot spots all over the hardwood in this championship series.Veteran guard Jason Kidd,  has played sixteen years in the league and winning a championship appeared to allude this future hall of fame recipient, but his leadership and experience proved to help make the difference for this team. Shawn Marion used his scrappy defensive play and funky free-throw shooting to be a presence on this  team. Center Tyson Chandler, was solid and protected the basket and provided power dunks when the team needed him to step  up his game. The rest of the Mavericks all gave their all as they chased a chance at becoming the best team in the NBA.

Coach Rick Carlisle, knows what it means to be a champion, as a member of the 1986 Boston Celtics. Carlisle believed in this Maverick team of castaways and kept pushing them to give a little more and play a little harder. The players could respect that coach Carlisle had been where they were and did not disappoint by coming up with wins. No one was prouder of the team than the outspoken and charismatic owner of the Mavericks, Mark Cuban. At every game Cuban could be seen court side in his signature tee shirts cheering the team on to victory. After eleven years of being the owner of a good Dallas Mavericks team, now Cuban was the owner of a championship team.

The Dallas Mavericks are champions and the play of Dirk Nowitzki was pivotal to making this happen. Dirk was consistent, played through the sickness of an 103 degree fever, and stayed the course making clutch shots to keep his team in the running for the championship. Dirk’s play is not flashy, but his talent and understanding of the game shows why he and his Dallas Mavericks have gone from castaways to champions. Congratulations to the Dallas Mavericks, they  have the true spirit and heart of a champion.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for June 2, 2011-After 19 Years Two Giants (Endeavor and Shaq) Retire

Space-Shuttle-Endeavour-Lanceering

After 19 Years Two Giants (Endeavor and Shaq) Retire

NASA’s Space Shuttle Endeavor and NBA Boston Celtic veteran center Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal have both brought their massive careers to a close. The Endeavor is the youngest in the fleet of space shuttles for NASA and “Shaq” is one of the oldest active players in the NBA. These twin towers have had extensive careers built upon their activities and travels.  As much as the Endeavor has been a force in outer space, Shaq has been a dominating force all over the planet earth.

The Endeavor and Shaq both know how to make an entrance and exit, as the replacement for the destroyed in mid-air Challenger, the space shuttle Endeavor was a breath of fresh air and had a wonderful run. Shaq was drafted into the NBA, by the Orlando Magic taking the young and budding team to new levels with his towering stature and dominance in the paint. The Endeavor, took off  and landed with a earth-shattering sonic boom, over the years Shaq’s running the floor and catching the pass for the powerful slam dunks, often lead to what felt like a sonic boom in stadiums all over the world.

On its final mission, the Endeavor was being piloted by Captain Mark Kelly and his team of six astronauts. Close to a million people converged on Cape Canaveral, Florida to watch the Endeavor. Those onlookers included Captain Kelly’s wife, Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford, who is recovering from a life-threatening gunshot to her head.  The Endeavor, at the end of its mission, after being partly dismantled, will be displayed at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Shaq’s retirement is due to his being  hampered with  a torn Achilles that is only going to get worse if he continues  to play in the league, even in a limited capacity. After capturing numerous individual awards and 4 championship rings (3 with the Los Angeles Lakers and 1 with Miami Heat) on Wednesday,  Shaq shared his  decision to leave the game with his over 4 million followers on the social media  giant, Twitter. In classic Shaq form (he has acquired a new nickname each of six times he has changed teams in his 19 seasons with the NBA), he asked his followers to give him a new nickname to embrace his new status of “retired”. The new name for Shaq is “401K”, an indicator of all of the money he would be living off of in his new state of retirement. On Friday, Shaq will hold a press conference at his (Orlando)/Isleworth mansion to formally announce that after 19 years he is hanging up his size 23′s to start his  new life. In addition to being the owner of several businesses, Shaq is looking forward to completing his doctoral studies in Human Resources Development from Miami’s Barry University and being called “Dr. Shaq”.

The Endeavor made its mark by becoming a space shuttle that was built to commemorate the lost lives of the Challenger and to restore people’s believe in continued space exploration after a tragedy. Shaquille, the self-proclaimed “Superman” of the NBA  brought back the excitement and presence of the “big man” with a likeable spirit, and bigger smile leading teams to victory at a new level. Both the Endeavor and Shaq came and made their impact on the world. The legacy of the space shuttle Endeavor and future Hall of Famer, Shaquille O’Neal will long be felt by those who watched them over the last 19 years.

Two giants who have earned their  places in history, the space shuttle  Endeavor and Shaq have racked up some impressive stats:

Here’s a by-the-numbers look at Endeavour’s lasting legacy in space:

$1,800,000,000: The cost of space shuttle Endeavour in 1987 dollars when it was built to replace the space shuttle Challenger after the tragic 1986 launch failure that killed seven astronauts. While $1.8 billion may seem like a lot for a NASA shuttle, at the time it was roughly half the cost of earlier shuttles since NASA was able to use some spares to construct Endeavour.

116,372,930: The total miles Endeavour has traveled before launching on its last voyage. [Video: Endeavour's Final Mission]
750,000: The number of spectators who turned out in Florida to watch Endeavour’s first launch attempt on April 29, 2011.

500,000: The number of spectators expected to turn out to Florida’s Space Coast to watch Endeavour’s final launch (the second attempt at liftoff) on May 16, 2011.

6,154: The number of entries in a national student contest to name the space shuttle Endeavour when it was built. The name Endeavour honors the 17th century sailing ship HMB Endeavour, which was captained by British seaman James Cook on a famous voyage of exploration in the South Pacific.

17,400: The speed at which Endeavour traveled (in miles per hour) to remain in orbit. It’s about Mach 25, or five times the speed of a bullet.

4,423: The number of orbits Endeavour made of Earth before launching on its last mission.

1992: The year Endeavour lifted off on its first flight. The orbiter carried seven astronauts to space on the STS-49 mission to rescue and repair a broken communications satellite.

283: The total number of days Endeavour has spent in space, not counting the 16 days it will add during STS-134.

167: The number of crew members Endeavour has carried to orbit, not including the six astronauts slated to ride the shuttle on the STS-134 mission.

25: The number of missions Endeavour will have flown by the time it is retired.

12: The number of times Endeavour will have visited the International Space Station by the time it is retired. The shuttle’s trips to the orbiting laboratory include the very first U.S. space station mission, the STS-88 flight in December 1998 that launched the first American space station module, Unity.

4: The number of space shuttles that NASA built before Endeavour. Its predecessors include Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Atlantis. [The Most Memorable Space Shuttle Missions]

3.5: The number of years it took NASA to build Endeavour. Construction on the orbiter began in September 1987, and completed in April 1991.

1: The number of times Endeavour has visited the Hubble Telescope in orbit. The shuttle was used to launch the first Hubble servicing mission, STS-61 in December 1993, which famously corrected the observatory’s faulty optics.

Shaq by the numbers:

Orlando Magic (1992–1996)

Miami Heat (2004–2008)

O’Neal’s individual accolades include the
1999–00 MVP award,
15 All-Star game selections,
three All-Star Game MVP awards,
three Finals MVP awards,
14 All-NBA team selections,
and three NBA All-Defensive Team selections.
He is one of only three players to win NBA MVP,
All-Star game MVP and Finals MVP awards in the same year (2000);
the other players are Willis Reed in 1970 and Michael Jordan in 1996 and 1998.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for May 12, 2011-A Winner’s Heart(Vol.5, Iss.2)

Surface anatomy of the human heart. The heart ...

Image via Wikipedia

Winning is always a goal that people seek in the game of life. Gaining, accomplishing, acquiring, all equals to a person  winning.  When someone  is,viewed as a winner, there is an implied belief that they have a heart for winning and a winner’s heart. When you win with a winner’s heart, you win with, style and grace.

Do you have a heart for winning? Are you operating with a winner’s heart? Is winning a goal in which you have set for yourself? If you cannot answer yes to these questions, maybe it is time to do a check of your heart. Is there a winner in you?

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for April 7, 2011-Making History at the Masters (Vol.4, Iss.1)

Carl Jackson, who will caddie in his 50th Masters, has carried Ben Crenshaw’s bag since 1976. (Zach Boyden-Holmes/Staff)

Making History at the Masters

In LA (Lovely Augusta) the first week in April signifies the start of Spring Break for students in Richmond county public schools and the commencement of the Professional Golf Association (PGA)’s premier event, the Masters tournament. For seventy-five years, the greens owned and created by Bobby Jones has set the course for golf majors. An international tournament, the Masters brings players and people from all around the world to see the well-manicured greens, blooming azaleas, colorful dogwoods and woodsy pines. The Masters golf tournament is  an event steeped in tradition and fanfare, and brings a large amount of revenue to the “Garden City”. Augusta is Georgia’s second largest city and  is located on the Savannah river and borders the state of South Carolina, when the Masters comes to town it puts the city on the world stage to see which golfer will reign victorious.

This year’s Masters has a wonderful back story of a person,Mr. Carl Jackson who has walked the course for 50 years and played a pivotal role in the career of golfer Ben Crenshaw. Mr. Jackson is a caddie that grow up peeking through the chain link fence of the Augusta Country club watching the happenings on the golf course. At the young age of 14, Mr. Jackson began a career as a caddie and was able to work at the Masters at the invitation of caddiemaster Freddie Bennett.

Since 1961, Mr. Jackson has worked on the “big course” and caddie the Masters tournament, he is easily the most recognized caddie in the game. In 1995, Mr. Jackson surpassed the late Willie Peterson, who spent 25 years as Jack Nicklaus‘ caddie (1959-83), with 34 trips, according to research by Golf Digest ‘s Ron Whitten. Mike Cowan, former caddie of Tiger Woods ,is a current caddie who has gained 27 trips to the Masters.

Mr. Jackson is humbled by the feat and has been planning for this milestone for a decade. Having such a wide margin between himself and the Mike Cowan means Mr. Jackson can rest assure it will be a record that will stand for years to come. Carrying the bag and walking the greens of the Augusta National has been Mr. Jackson’s calling card and it is with pride he carries this banner of longevity.

In the course of Mr. Jackson’s fifty years at the Masters, he has been with golf legend, Ben Crenshaw for thirty-five years and two Masters tournament wins (1984 and 1995). The two men were introduced to each other by Jack Stephens, a member of the Augusta National that saw the potential in Carl Jackson in his younger years. It was Jack Stephens at urging of President Dwight Eisenhower and others who help Mr. Jackson maintain his position as a caddie after dropping out of school to make money to help support his family.  Jack Stephens convinced Mr. Jackson to get a GED so he could remain employed by the Augusta National. Mr. Jackson would later move to Little Rock, Arkansas and work as a caddie, caddiemaster and business manager for Jack Stephens and his family.

Larger than being the caddie of a great golfer Mr. Jackson is proud of the Augusta National Caddies (a group of black men) that he worked with from 1961-1983, during this time period no outside caddies were allowed to work at the tournament. Willie “Pappy” Stokes, Nathaniel “Ironman” Avery and Willie “Cemetery” Perteet, were apart of the Augusta National Caddies and have died. Stokes, who caddied for five Masters winners, was a mentor to Jackson.

Mr. Jackson is not only a history making caddie but he is a husband, father, brother and son but also a cancer survivor. In 2000, Mr. Jackson was diagnosed with colon cancer, with multiple tumors he was told he would need a costly operation. Giving up and not wanting to be a burden to his family, Mr. Jackson decided he would just let the cancer take its course.  Mr. Jackson’s wife contacted Ben and Julie Crenshaw and let them know that her husband chose to not fight the cancer. The Crenshaw’s along with Jack Stephens convinced Mr. Jackson that he could have any needed treatment for his cancer and not to worry about the cost. The time Mr. Jackson was battling cancer was the only time he missed a Masters in fifty-three years.

The Masters golf tournament will not formally acknowledge the accomplishments of Mr. Carl Jackson. It is the belief of members of the Augusta National to focus on the game and not those playing or assisting with play. The laid back demeanor of Mr. Jackson will gain more from the crowds of fans who will show their support and celebration at each hole on the journey that he and Ben Crenshaw take as they seek to grab hold of the victory once more at the Masters.

BY THE NUMBERS:

14: Age Jackson caddied his first Masters Tournament

39: Number of consecutive Masters appearances

30: Cuts made by golfers Jackson caddied for at the Masters

34: Number of Masters Jackson has caddied for Ben Crenshaw

1: Masters Jackson has missed in the past 50 years

1961: Year Jackson Caddied his first Masters Tournament

2: Bags carried to Masters wins, both with Crenshaw.

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for April 5, 2011-A Champion’s Moment To Shine (Vol.2, Iss.1)

A Champion’s Moment To Shine

The 2011 NCAA Men’s championship game was played in the Houston, Texas at the Reliant Stadium on Monday evening with the University of Connecticut (UConn) Huskies taking on the Butler University Bulldogs. The 2011 NCAA Men’s championship is the culmination of the college basketball’s “March Madness” featuring a former champion in the UCONN Huskies and the former cinderella team that may it to the finals just a year ago, the Butler Bulldogs. In the end UCONN lead by the heart of two champions, Coach Jim Calhoun and shooting sensation junior guard, Kemba Walker were victorious over Butler with a score of 53-41.

This championship game was a defensive battle  that saw as many as 88 missed field goal attempts between both teams.  In the first half the teams were tied at 19 when Butler hit a long-range three pointer to go up 22-19 going into halftime. Most commentators and sports fans will say this championship game was not full of excitement and a nail-biter that would come down to a final shot but, played more like a defensive scuffle. UCONN took Butler to task and they were unable to find the basket during the second half only making a few shots. This championship game was the lowest scoring in the history of the NCAA 62 year existence.

For all the hype behind getting to the Final Four and then being the last two teams standing, this game proved to provide some surprises  and made history. UCONN’s coach Jim Calhoun, who won his third national title with what he says is the most resilient team he has ever coached. He joined John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight and Adolph Rupp as the only coaches with more than two titles. Calhoun, 68, also became the oldest coach ever to win the championship. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/u-conn-huskies-defeat-butler-bulldogs-53-41-for-ncaa-basketball-championship/2011/04/04/AFEFfXgC_story.html Joining the ranks of true champion coaches, Coach Calhoun did not focus on the history he made but the ability of his team to rise to occasion and become champions. For Coach Calhoun this win was a shining moment  worthy of champion status after surviving three bouts with cancer and sitting out a portion of the season last year due to medical concerns.

The  2011 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship closes out the season for teams, players, coaches, colleges, students, families and fans that had an opportunity to participate in a trip to the “big dance”. All of the training, trials, and triumph are over for this time and this season. Some teams and players will take this time to reflect on the journey of the season and how they can improve for next year, some will make decisions about continuing their college years or venture to throw their names in the hats for the upcoming National Basketball Association (NBA) draft in June.  No matter what path a team or a player chooses beyond this season, they can be proud to be a part of the game of basketball and have the talent to compete to become a champion.

Congratulations to the Butler Bulldogs, though they came up short of victory, they have found there team in this place back to back years which will make them strive harder to gain the reigns of being called a champion. The UCONN Huskies played in the 2011 NCAA tournament with heart and determination throughout the games to show the world how to celebrate and have a champions moment to shine.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for December 9, 2010 K.I.M. KEEP IT MOVING (Vol.7, Iss.2)

Keep It Moving

One week ago you were challenged to establish goals and take steps you achieve them before December ends. Where are you? Are you still on track to accomplish your own level of greatness to closeout 2010? Have you continued to tell yourself those four simple words, YOU CAN DO THIS! Did you challenge and stretch yourself to accomplish your goals? Have you started to knock down the barriers to you achieving your goals? Did you write down your goals? Have you shared your goals with someone else? Have you envisioned yourself accomplishing your goals?

If you answered “yes” to one or all of these questions good for you. If you answered “no” to any of these questions do not fret or be discouraged. Now is the time to KEEP IT MOVING! You cannot let what you have not accomplished stop you from continuing to KEEP IT MOVING! Decide to not worry about what you have not accomplished, but what you can accomplish if you KEEP IT MOVING!

So what does it take to KEEP IT MOVING! First, you have to remind yourself that YOU CAN DO THIS! If you believe in your ability to accomplish a goal that is a big step in the right direction. Second, you have to record what you want to accomplish. Write down your goals and put yourself on a timetable, this will help you to KEEP IT MOVING! Finally, you have to repeat what you want to accomplish by sharing your goals with someone else in order to KEEP IT MOVING! When you tell another person what you seek to accomplish, they can hold you accountable and keep you encouraged.

Remember to continue to constantly tell yourself YOU CAN DO THIS! Recognize that all the great things that you can do as you finish 2010 can only happen if you remind yourself of what you want to accomplish. Put yourself on a timetable by writing down the goals you want to achieve. Once you tell yourself YOU CAN DO THIS! and write your goals with an attached timetable, then you need to tell others so they can hold you accountable. In order to accomplish these three steps you have to KEEP IT MOVING!
