Five Questions For A Poet People Should Know

Who are you as a Poet? Please share something about yourself and your business.

As a poet I am always thinking of new ways I can write and make myself better.  I get a lot of inspiration from my students.  They know I love to write poetry so when they write poetry they are always trying to please me.  It warms my heart to know that they want to know what I think.  They make me a better writer.

What makes you a “Poet People Should Know”?

Not tooting my own horn, but my words are special.  Each word that I write comes from something I have experienced.  Those experiences have made me who I am today.

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world?

I have always been a writer but I didn’t realize that I wanted to share my words with the world until a few years ago.  My words had always been written in a journal.  I never shared them with anyone because they were my private thoughts.  Those private thoughts turned into poems.  Little by little I started sharing them and a great friend of mine told me that I should really consider writing professionally.  I took my first step steps and submitted and agreed to write for a book my friend was publishing.  It was refreshing and I felt really good about it.  Afterwards I was connected with two authors who were publishing a poetry anthology and I had some of my poems published in there.  Then I was connected with Freedomink Publishing and I found my home.  My first book Life and Love Through My Eyes was published in July 2012.  I am working on my second book Dismissed Inhibitions for release this October.  I am excited because I have the chance again to share my experiences.

Below is my eighth feature blog post in honor of Women’s History Month.  It is important that we celebrate the beauty and brains of women. Please enjoy learning about these fascinating women and then make sure you support them in their passions, projects, and products

Who are you? Please share something about yourself and your business.

I am Dr. Wachell McKendrick and I am currently a college professor of Social Work at Florida A&M University.  I like to say that my career has been via the “scenic route” as I was a teen mother when I graduated high school as an Honors student at 17 years old, and entered college (Florida State University). After becoming a military spouse (my daughter’s father) at 19 I continued my education and completed my bachelor’s degree with two children at age 21. While in the military I counseled military personnel and their families who had substance abuse issues. My work continued to be in the Social work arena (elderly, substance abuse, domestic violence victims, program development, and clinical supervision) for the next 20 years. At that time I was going through a divorce, left Miami (with my youngest child now, age 9), my hometown, and returned to school to pursue my dream of a PhD. I completed my PhD in 2011 at the school I began in, Florida State University. So, I guess you can say that I had come full circle. My current focus is Family relations and empowering women.

What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”?

Having experienced many of the same issues I was counseling others for, my ability to sympathize and empathize with others and their plight in life add a personal dimension to my work (I consider it my life’s ministry). My determination and passion for reaching goals I have set for myself which also impact the lives of others, literally. My dedication to social justice, the family, and their healthy functioning is why people should know me. I have a passion for social work and not just for social work’s or social work research’s sake, but for social action and change in the lives of people I teach, counsel, and encounter in my community

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world?

I would guess I realized this at an early age, being an older sister. I have always felt a responsibility to others and their welfare. If I could change it, defend it, then I was at the front doing so. I was called “Hercules” as a young girl, I think it went deep into my psyche (J). I realized that counseling was a mechanism for effecting change while in high school. While remaining in my assigned school while I was pregnant (a choice I made with the encouragement of my father), the school psychologist (a woman and role model)and the sessions we had weekly were impactful and I wanted to provide the same. I was naturally a caretaker and listener, so it made sense to major in psychology.

How do you make it all happen?

As alluded to earlier, my family’s support from my adolescence, women mentors (Church Secretary, Sunday School teacher, Choir Directress, and others) in my church, in my family ( my aunts on both sides of my family tree who were learned women despite not having degrees), and  in my profession. Ultimately, my belief in God as directing my steps and somewhere in all of it, belief that with Him guiding I could reach goals I set for myself.

1) I am Katandra Shanel Jackson. Daughter, Sister, Mother, Amiga, Girlfriend. Lover of children, animals, all things literary, antiques/old things, tattoos and 4 inch stilettos. I am the Owner/Operator at Sun-Kissed Under A Georgia Sky, Quilted blankets by Kat… Foundation Starter of Angel Eyes Foundation, a 501c3 entity that is educating the masses and raising awareness about child sexual abuse… Chief Everything Officer (CEO), Editor-At-Large at FreedomInk Publishing… Overall Entrepreneur. –What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”?

2) I feel that we each bring something different to the table which is life. What I bring is a never-ending oasis of creativity and ingenuity that is industry forward… not to mention my own nerdy, quirky, sassy, fearless sense of style and mannerism to match. 

–When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world?

3) My ‘something special’ was stumbled upon very much like that of unearthing a hidden gem! Books. I kept a diary during my pre-teen years and began writing poetry that was based on my everyday existence. Real life is sometimes stranger than fiction. At the age of 29 for the 2nd or 3rd time (I’ve officially lost count at that fountain of youth!) I began posting entries via my first blog. The Diary of A Bride To Be. A lot of folks were really relating and enjoying the entries and several were making comment about how I should turn the blog into a book. So I contacted several Literary Agents and after not getting the prompt and proper response of submitting the type of book ‘they’ wanted to read, I sought a Self-Publishing company and took the necessary steps to release my first in print book! Soon after I met FreedomInk 1st Published Author, Richard McKinney. With a major vote of trust and confidence from him, I published Redemption!! That was in 2011. It is now 2013 and at current, FreedomInk along with it’s imprint, Oppidian, houses 11 Authors, myself included and there are 17 titles under the umbrella! All but 4 have been published and released and are available wherever books are sold!!

5) Lots of sleepless nights. Sacrifice. By the general understanding that in order for the dream to be achieved, I must take me as an individual out of the equation. Mostly I’m able to do this because no matter who comes in and out of my life, no matter the ups and downs, no matter the setbacks and do-over’s, my children believe in me! They are my life-force, my reason for being, my reason to give everyday my all. They are why I make it happen. They believe in me and that in-turn fuels the dream.

A True Educator Lucy Craft Laney

Miss Lucy Craft Laney has gone down in history as one of the state of Georgia‘s most influential educational leaders. As a child of Georgia she is in league with other outstanding black hero’s from Georgia such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Leader and Dr. Henry McNeil Turner, the first black chaplain in the U.S. Army and the first black in the Georgia Legislature. The founder and principal of the Haines Institute in Augusta for fifty years (1883-1933), Lucy Craft Laney is Georgia’s most famous female African American educator.

She was born on April 13, 1854, one of ten children, to Louisa and David Laney during slavery. Her parents, however, were not slaves. David Laney purchased his freedom about twenty years before Laney’s birth; he purchased his wife’s freedom sometime after their marriage. Laney learned to read and write by the age of four and could translate difficult passages in Latin by the age of twelve, including Julius Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War.

“Miss Lucy,” as she was generally known, began her own school in 1883 in the basement of Christ Presbyterian Church in Augusta.

The school was chartered by the state three years later and named the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. Originally Laney intended to admit only girls, but several boys appeared and she could not turn them away. Laney began her lifelong appeal for funding for her school by traveling to a meeting of the General Assembly of the Northern Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis in 1886. She addressed the assembly but received only her fare home. She did, however, obtain the confidence of a lifetime

benefactor, Mrs. Francine E. H. Haines, for whom her school was named. By 1912 the Haines Institute employed thirty-four teachers, enrolled nine hundred students, and offered a fifth year of college preparatory high school in which Laney herself taught Latin. Haines graduates matriculated at Howard, Fisk, Yale, and other prestigious colleges, where they reflected the confidence and pride that Laney and her staff had instilled in their students.

Miss Laney started the first black kindergarten in Augusta, Georgia and the first black nursing school in the city, the Lamar School of Nursing. Many people were influenced by the work that Miss Laney did at Haines. Ms. Mary McCleod Bethune who worked with Miss Laney for a year was so impressed by Miss Laney’s accomplishments that she went to Florida and founded Bethune-Cookman College for Blacks. This outstanding institution continues to thrive and produce thousands of African American students.

After a life of selfless dedication to the education of her people, which focused on the education of her people, Miss Laney died on October 23, 1933. Thousands of people came to her funeral. Her body was buried on the corner of the lawn of the Haines & Normal Industrial Institute. Miss Laney’s spirit lives on and her strong legacy continues to this day.

After her death, the Haines Normal & Industrial Institute was renamed the Lucy Craft Laney Comprehensive High School in her honor, Gwinnett Street was renamed Laney-Walker Boulevard in the honor of her and that of Dr. Charles T. Walker, pastor, civic leader, founder of Tabernacle Baptist Church and co-founder of Atlanta University. There are several other schools throughout the USA that have been named in Miss Laney’s honor. In 1974, in honor of her contributions to Georgia and its children, the portrait of Miss Laney was commissioned by then Governor Jimmy Carter and unveiled in the Georgia State Capitol. In the summer of 1965, my mother then Marian Anderson, graduated from the great and legendary Lucy Craft Laney High School. Twenty  and twenty-one years later, I in (Class of 1985) and my sister Greta ( Class of 1986) walked across the stage at the civic center as graduates of “dear ol’ Laney High”. Walking the halls and yard at Lucy C. Laney, was fun. Sitting in the classroom and wearing my Army JROTC uniform were important elements in building our foundation. Our lives were enriched and our legacy was set as Laney Wildcats who carried the “Pride of the South.”

Thanks you Miss Lucy Craft Laney for your dedication and for being a true educator with a love for learning that continues to live on in Wildcats all over the world.

 MENTOR-You Sow They Grow!

Do you have a few hours a week to spend with a young person? Mentoring and the difference it makes in the life of a child is highlighted each January for National Mentoring Month. When you sow into the life of a child through mentoring you open the door to opportunities and possibilities for the child.

 

Mentoring can do the following:

 

• Help guide a child in their growth and development
• Help a child with education and career goal
• Help the child fill in the gaps in life

Created in 2002 by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us—individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits—can work together to increase the number of mentors to assure brighter futures for our young people. http://www.nationalmentoringmonth.org/

 

 

As a long time mentor, I have learned that children just want to be encouraged. When you give of your talent, your time and your treasures to a child you will see the impact of your involvement in their lives. A child that is connected with a mentor has another level of support.

 

For the last eight years I have had the pleasure of working with an emerging non-profit in Central Florida, Tomorrow Investments Matter (T.I.M. Works). The core mission of  T.I.M. Works is to help young ladies gain an increased self-awareness, learn to develop healthy relationships, understand their self-worth, gain financial savvy skills, and develop leadership skills. Kwanzaa- A Cultural Celebration

Kwanzaa is an African American cultural holiday. The name comes from Swahili “mutanda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits”.

First fruits celebrations originate from ancient Egypt and Nubia. They were the inspiration for the modern version of Kwanzaa founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, a time of African-Americans‘ struggle for civil rights.

Kwanzaa is occurs between Dec 26 and Jan 1, honouring human dignity, community, culture and people’s relationship with the environment. Respect is paid to the ancestors and new commitments to one’s community are taken on. Each day of the festival focuses on a different one of seven values including Umoja (Unity), Kujichaguilia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

During the festival homes, churches and places for communal gathering are decorated in black, red and green signifying future and hope. On Dec 31 a big feast (Karamu) takes place which is usually a product of joint communal effort. http://bit.ly/Ttaq7D

The Air We Breathe

 

November is National COPD Awareness Month and we should not take the air we breathe for granted.Our lifeline is tied directly to the air we breathe,

 

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a serious lung disease which makes it hard to breathe. Also known by other names, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, COPD is now the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and also causes long-term disability.

The number of people who have COPD is on the rise — more than 12 million are currently diagnosed with it. And it is estimated that another 12 million may have COPD but not realize it.

If you or someone you know has symptoms such as chronic coughing, shortness of breath or wheezing, see your doctor or health care provider for a simple breathing test. By taking steps now, and talking with your doctor or health care provider about treatment options, you can breathe better and enjoy a more active life.

• COPD is the 3^rd leading cause of death in the United States and causes serious, long-term disability
• COPD kills more than 120,000 Americans each year. That’s one death every 4 minutes
• More than 12 million people are diagnosed with COPD

Beyond October

As we close the month of October and National Breast Cancer Awareness month, we can sit and wonder was enough said and done to help the cause. Until there is a cure for breast cancer we must commit to do more beyond thirty-one days in the fall of the year. Breast cancer is a bold disease that has found its way into every segment of society and is spreading like wildfire.  Because breast cancer is not stopping, slowing down or taking a break, we must be very diligent to stay in the fight to find a cure. As we speak, somewhere in the world someone has been given a diagnosis of breast cancer, and they do not know how to deal with the road ahead. Knowing that someone is in need of  ways to cope with breast cancer is reason enough to keep working to find a cure.  

Now is the time to make the effort to do your part to keep breast cancer awareness relevant and in the forefront of people’s hearts and minds. Do your part by connecting with local or national organizations that promote breast health. It is vital that everyone remembers to education, empower and encourage others about breast cancer. 

Until we see that breast cancer is not taking over at alarming rates to women, men, young and old people we have to work hard by going out and telling others we support breast cancer health and awareness. So be challenged, be courageous, be committed to the cause of finding a cure for breast cancer.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH-PAUSE FOR THE CAUSE

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October, 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities were conducted at the local, state, and national levels.

Highlighting Domestic Violence Awareness occurs every October and those who are victims and survivors will tell you that the abusers who torment and torture are active year around. Now is not a time to remain silent but to speak out about the effects of Domestic Violence. It is important to note what are causes for Domestic Violence but to also Pause for the cause and spread the word to others.

Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive 

behavior perpetrated by an intimate partner against another.  It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every 

community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background.  

Violence against women is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior, and thus is 

part of a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence results in physical injury, 

psychological trauma, and sometimes death. The consequences of domestic violence can cross generations 

and truly last a lifetime. 

Here are some facts and figures about Domestic Violence

 

One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.

85% of domestic violence victims are women.

Historically, females have been most often victimized by someone they knew.

Females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.
