Five Questions For A Poet People Should Know

Who are you as a Poet? Please share something about yourself and your business.

As a poet I am always thinking of new ways I can write and make myself better.  I get a lot of inspiration from my students.  They know I love to write poetry so when they write poetry they are always trying to please me.  It warms my heart to know that they want to know what I think.  They make me a better writer.

What makes you a “Poet People Should Know”?

Not tooting my own horn, but my words are special.  Each word that I write comes from something I have experienced.  Those experiences have made me who I am today.

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world?

I have always been a writer but I didn’t realize that I wanted to share my words with the world until a few years ago.  My words had always been written in a journal.  I never shared them with anyone because they were my private thoughts.  Those private thoughts turned into poems.  Little by little I started sharing them and a great friend of mine told me that I should really consider writing professionally.  I took my first step steps and submitted and agreed to write for a book my friend was publishing.  It was refreshing and I felt really good about it.  Afterwards I was connected with two authors who were publishing a poetry anthology and I had some of my poems published in there.  Then I was connected with Freedomink Publishing and I found my home.  My first book Life and Love Through My Eyes was published in July 2012.  I am working on my second book Dismissed Inhibitions for release this October.  I am excited because I have the chance again to share my experiences.

YoTrip Celebrates Women You Should Know

 
March is Women’s History Month and I think it is wonderful that the world takes 31 days and makes a seat of honor for women. In so many faces, places and spaces in this world the value of women is not even considered. In some parts of the world women are treated as second class citizens or less. The beauty of a woman‘s ability to give birth and keep the planet populated is viewed as sport by some people in this world. I am happy to honor, showcase, uplift, and praise women during the month of March and every other day of the year!

 

Recently, I was invited to sit in a circle among some bright-eyed young ladies and some seasoned, successful women for a candid conversation. The conversation was lively and spirited in the exchange of ideas and advice. At one point, I became sad to hear a young girl offer that she did not know of any women in her life to call role models. I could not let it go, I had to express to the group that being a woman is beautiful, exciting and worthy of honor and these young women needed to find the value of seeing a woman role model in their homes, schools, churches and community at large. So often, young ladies are caught up in the media hype of the rich and famous. The portrayal of the celebrities as living the life, is often what the media projects to sell products and people. This stemmed a round table poll question: who do you consider a role model and why? Most of the seasoned ladies offered that their Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, or Sister were a strong inspiration in their lives. It is my hope that when the seasoned women shared about the power of having a woman to guide you in life impacted the young ladies.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 3/14/13- An Inventor Beyond Her Time Bessie Blount (Vol.3,Iss.1)

“A black woman can invent something for the benefit of humankind” – Bessie Blount  

Bessie Blount, was a physical therapist who worked with soldiers injured in W.W.II. Bessie Blount’s war service inspired her to patent a device, in 1951, that allowed amputees to feed themselves.

The electrical device allowed a tube to deliver one mouthful of food at a time to a patient in a wheelchair or in a bed whenever he or she bit down on the tube. She later invented a portable receptacle support that was a simpler and smaller version of the same, designed to be worn around a patient’s neck. http://inventors.about.com/od/bstartinventors/a/Bessie_Blount.htm

Bessie Blunt could not get all of her inventions patented with ease yet she was not deterred, but lived and worked with determination. The French government saw the need and usefulness of her inventions and shared them with the world. On Christmas night 1951, Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette retired to bed in their white frame house tucked inside a small orange grove in Mims, Florida. Ten minutes later, a bomb shattered their house, their lives, and any notions that the South’s post-war transition to racial equality would be a smooth one. Harry Moore died that night, his wife nine days later.

Harry T. Moore paved the way for the ‘60s civil rights movement by championing equal pay for black teachers, organizing the black vote and, publicly condemning racist attitudes and actions of local, state and national officials.

The work of Harry T. Moore was progressive in a time when blacks were not taking actions against systematic racial inequality. A fighter for the people, Harry T. Moore just wanted to see fairness in all aspects of life not only in Brevard County, Florida but throughout the state.

In 1934, Harry Moore started the Brevard County NAACP, and steadily built it into a formidable organization. In 1937, in conjunction with the all-black Florida State Teacher’s Association, and backed by the NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall in New York, Moore filed the first lawsuit in the Deep South to equalize black and white teacher salaries.

n 1944, Thurgood Marshall won a major victory in the landmark Smith v. Allwright case, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the “lily-white” Democratic Party primary was unconstitutional. Harry Moore immediately organized the Progressive Voters’ League, and in the next six years, due primarily to his leadership, over 116,000 black voters were registered in the Florida Democratic Party. This represented 31 percent of all eligible black voters in the state, a figure that was 51% higher than any other southern state. http://www.pbs.org/harrymoore/harry/mbio.html

The lead roles that Harry T. Moore assumed in the political advancements cost both Harry and his wife Harriette their teaching jobs. Harry then increased his presence in the NAACP as a full-time worker, recruiting new members and taking on controversial issues as lynching and police brutality. It was the unwavering stance of Harry T. Moore that often put him in the line of fire and many would offer led to his death on Christmas in 1951.

Breaking down barriers and raising awareness of the inequities was the calling card of  the educator, turned political activist. Harry T. Moore with  his wife Harriette by right his side, worked  unselfishly in the struggle to make a difference in the lives of southern blacks. Today and forever we salute the efforts of Harry T. and Harriette Moore in the civil rights movement.

 

Today marks the one year anniversary of the murder of 17 -year old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. The unarmed teen was gunned down as he walked home. Trayvon’s death has brought to light the use of the “Stand Your Ground” defense.

A True Educator Lucy Craft Laney

Miss Lucy Craft Laney has gone down in history as one of the state of Georgia‘s most influential educational leaders. As a child of Georgia she is in league with other outstanding black hero’s from Georgia such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Leader and Dr. Henry McNeil Turner, the first black chaplain in the U.S. Army and the first black in the Georgia Legislature. The founder and principal of the Haines Institute in Augusta for fifty years (1883-1933), Lucy Craft Laney is Georgia’s most famous female African American educator.

She was born on April 13, 1854, one of ten children, to Louisa and David Laney during slavery. Her parents, however, were not slaves. David Laney purchased his freedom about twenty years before Laney’s birth; he purchased his wife’s freedom sometime after their marriage. Laney learned to read and write by the age of four and could translate difficult passages in Latin by the age of twelve, including Julius Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War.

“Miss Lucy,” as she was generally known, began her own school in 1883 in the basement of Christ Presbyterian Church in Augusta.

The school was chartered by the state three years later and named the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. Originally Laney intended to admit only girls, but several boys appeared and she could not turn them away. Laney began her lifelong appeal for funding for her school by traveling to a meeting of the General Assembly of the Northern Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis in 1886. She addressed the assembly but received only her fare home. She did, however, obtain the confidence of a lifetime

benefactor, Mrs. Francine E. H. Haines, for whom her school was named. By 1912 the Haines Institute employed thirty-four teachers, enrolled nine hundred students, and offered a fifth year of college preparatory high school in which Laney herself taught Latin. Haines graduates matriculated at Howard, Fisk, Yale, and other prestigious colleges, where they reflected the confidence and pride that Laney and her staff had instilled in their students.

Miss Laney started the first black kindergarten in Augusta, Georgia and the first black nursing school in the city, the Lamar School of Nursing. Many people were influenced by the work that Miss Laney did at Haines. Ms. Mary McCleod Bethune who worked with Miss Laney for a year was so impressed by Miss Laney’s accomplishments that she went to Florida and founded Bethune-Cookman College for Blacks. This outstanding institution continues to thrive and produce thousands of African American students.

After a life of selfless dedication to the education of her people, which focused on the education of her people, Miss Laney died on October 23, 1933. Thousands of people came to her funeral. Her body was buried on the corner of the lawn of the Haines & Normal Industrial Institute. Miss Laney’s spirit lives on and her strong legacy continues to this day.

After her death, the Haines Normal & Industrial Institute was renamed the Lucy Craft Laney Comprehensive High School in her honor, Gwinnett Street was renamed Laney-Walker Boulevard in the honor of her and that of Dr. Charles T. Walker, pastor, civic leader, founder of Tabernacle Baptist Church and co-founder of Atlanta University. There are several other schools throughout the USA that have been named in Miss Laney’s honor. In 1974, in honor of her contributions to Georgia and its children, the portrait of Miss Laney was commissioned by then Governor Jimmy Carter and unveiled in the Georgia State Capitol. In the summer of 1965, my mother then Marian Anderson, graduated from the great and legendary Lucy Craft Laney High School. Twenty  and twenty-one years later, I in (Class of 1985) and my sister Greta ( Class of 1986) walked across the stage at the civic center as graduates of “dear ol’ Laney High”. Walking the halls and yard at Lucy C. Laney, was fun. Sitting in the classroom and wearing my Army JROTC uniform were important elements in building our foundation. Our lives were enriched and our legacy was set as Laney Wildcats who carried the “Pride of the South.”

Thanks you Miss Lucy Craft Laney for your dedication and for being a true educator with a love for learning that continues to live on in Wildcats all over the world.

The Greensboro Lunch Counter Sit-in

On February 1, 1960, four young African-American men, freshmen at the Agricultural and Technical College of North Carolina, entered the Greensboro Woolworth’s and sat down on stools that had, until that moment, been occupied exclusively by white customers. The four—Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair Jr., Joseph McNeil and David Richmond—asked to be served, and were refused. But they did not get up and leave. Indeed, they launched a protest that lasted six months and helped change America. A section of that historic counter is now held by the National Museum of American History, where the chairman of the division of politics and reform, Harry Rubenstein, calls it “a significant part of a larger collection about participation in our political system.” The story behind it is central to the epic struggle of the civil rights movement.

The courageous act of four young college students changed the course for access to retail outlets and places of public accommodations. Peaceful protests began to occur all over the segregated south.  Over fifty years have come and gone yet the actions of the Greensboro Four must be remembered when you sit in fancy restaurants or flowery mom and pop shops.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 2/7/13-Tice Davids & The Underground Railroad

Origin of the Term Underground Railroad

The origins of the Underground Railroad go back before the 18th century, but the terminology dates to around 1831. One version states that an enslaved, Tice Davids, crossed the Ohio River in the vicinity of Ripley, Ohio, a ferryboat ride from the slave state of Kentucky, to escape from his owner. As Tice Davids swam the river, his owner kept him in sight as he pursued him in a small rowboat. He could see Tice’s head bobbling in the river, but once Tice reached the Ohio side, he was lost from view. His owner searched diligently around Ripley, “a town that hated slavery,” but was unable to find his human property. Bewildered and tuckered out, the slave owner could only conclude that Tice Davids “must have gone on an underground road.”

It was subsequent to this incident that those conspirators involved in the escape of Tice Davis, and others, began to use such terms as conductors, firemen, brakemen, stationmaster, depots/stations, and such phrases as “catching the next train” to describe their clandestine, though morally driven, efforts in assisting refugees to escape a morally bankrupted slave-owning South. The terminology used was in line with the country’s early use of steam to propel passenger-carrying vehicles, in this case the railroads. http://www.undergroundrailroadexperience.cuny.edu/origin.html

A Season of Memories

Ruth Anderson, my beloved grandmother left this world for her heavenly home when I was still a young one (just eight years old). My brief time with my grandma was filled with experiences that left lasting impressions on my life. During the fall/winter months, grandma would love to take her beloved grandchildren along for one of her favorite past-times: picking pecans.

In Augusta, Georgia as the leaves found their way off the trees, the grounds would become littered with the dusty brown colored shells with black lines holding the treasured nuts known as pecans. I can still hear the rusting sound as the marriage of the leaves, pecan shells, and shoes all coming together as we walked through the orchards that seemed larger than life. Armed with our brown bags, neatly folder under our arms, we opened the bag and watched grandma for instructions on how which pecans were ready to be picked. 

My grandma was expert in finding pecans at their prime and she would feel her brown bag quickly. The pecans we picked would soon turn into the main ingredients in Pecan pies or toasted and rolled with sugar and spice for a wonderful holiday treat.

The Air We Breathe

 

November is National COPD Awareness Month and we should not take the air we breathe for granted.Our lifeline is tied directly to the air we breathe,

 

COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a serious lung disease which makes it hard to breathe. Also known by other names, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, COPD is now the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and also causes long-term disability.

The number of people who have COPD is on the rise — more than 12 million are currently diagnosed with it. And it is estimated that another 12 million may have COPD but not realize it.

If you or someone you know has symptoms such as chronic coughing, shortness of breath or wheezing, see your doctor or health care provider for a simple breathing test. By taking steps now, and talking with your doctor or health care provider about treatment options, you can breathe better and enjoy a more active life.

• COPD kills more than 120,000 Americans each year. That’s one death every 4 minutes
