Five Questions For A Poet People Should Know

Who are you as a Poet? Please share something about yourself and your business.

As a poet I am always thinking of new ways I can write and make myself better.  I get a lot of inspiration from my students.  They know I love to write poetry so when they write poetry they are always trying to please me.  It warms my heart to know that they want to know what I think.  They make me a better writer.

What makes you a “Poet People Should Know”?

Not tooting my own horn, but my words are special.  Each word that I write comes from something I have experienced.  Those experiences have made me who I am today.

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world?

I have always been a writer but I didn’t realize that I wanted to share my words with the world until a few years ago.  My words had always been written in a journal.  I never shared them with anyone because they were my private thoughts.  Those private thoughts turned into poems.  Little by little I started sharing them and a great friend of mine told me that I should really consider writing professionally.  I took my first step steps and submitted and agreed to write for a book my friend was publishing.  It was refreshing and I felt really good about it.  Afterwards I was connected with two authors who were publishing a poetry anthology and I had some of my poems published in there.  Then I was connected with Freedomink Publishing and I found my home.  My first book Life and Love Through My Eyes was published in July 2012.  I am working on my second book Dismissed Inhibitions for release this October.  I am excited because I have the chance again to share my experiences.

Who are you? Please share something about yourself and your business.

My name is Yvette Register. I help people manage the risks of every day life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams. I also inspire people to live out their God-given dreams. I do this as a State Farm Insurance agent, motivational writer of a blog called Beyond that Dream with Yvette Register and co-founder of the Cheers to Great Health facebook page.

What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”?

I am a 2 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed in 2011, nothing mattered to me but my fight to conquer the cancer that was trying to take over my body. I focus on living and trusting in the Lord to get me through it. As a result I am now cancer free and I promised the Lord I would spend the rest of my life telling others how good God is!

I want people to know that nothing beats having faith in God. I understand that tomorrow is not promised. I live with the believe in a win/win situation. If I die, I will go to be with the Lord. If I live I will get to be here with my friends and family to impact the world.

I give God all the glory.

When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world?

When I was a little girl I always wanted to be an entrepreneur. I always felt I was here to help others. Becoming an insurance agent is one of the fulfillment’s of my purpose. I get to help people in the most difficult times in their lives. I love what I do and am blessed to be a blessing to others.

How do you make it all happen?

I make it all happen by the grace of God. I believe Phil. 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Everyday I get up and work hard. Hard work is like planting seeds to harvest in the future. I plant and trust God for the growth!

I am Dr. Darcova Triplett- Wife, Mother, Educator, Poet, Author, Visionary of The STRUT Movement, Designer of Earrings and Visual Artist. My business is all about creating with the purpose of shifting the atmosphere. I Create to Provoke an Awakening to the fact that the world is waiting for each of us to STRUT in our Purpose!

What makes you a “Woman People Should Know”? It is imperative that people know me because my Positivity, Creativity and Make-it-Happen STRUT IS CONTAGIOUS!!! When did you find out that you had that something special that you wanted to share with the world? As a child, my parents always told my sister and I that we were Unique, Distinct and Influential. Those words have always stuck with me and, to be quite honest, as far back as I can remember, I’ve ALWAYS let my little light shine.

How do you make it all happen? My method to making it happen is really really really simple. I say GOD USE ME! Then I get quiet. What follows is a series of dreams and visions. And when I’m really still and really focused, HE GIVES SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS, TOO! I write down His plans for me… and go with the flow. As ordained, doors open and opportunities become available. As I align my will to God’s Will, He Stirs Up the Gifts already planted inside of me. It’s not rocket science and nothing miraculous about it. I ask God to fix my mind and touch my hands… AND HE SHOWS OUT EVERY TIME!

Miss Lucy Craft Laney has gone down in history as one of the state of Georgia‘s most influential educational leaders. As a child of Georgia she is in league with other outstanding black hero’s from Georgia such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Leader and Dr. Henry McNeil Turner, the first black chaplain in the U.S. Army and the first black in the Georgia Legislature. The founder and principal of the Haines Institute in Augusta for fifty years (1883-1933), Lucy Craft Laney is Georgia’s most famous female African American educator.

She was born on April 13, 1854, one of ten children, to Louisa and David Laney during slavery. Her parents, however, were not slaves. David Laney purchased his freedom about twenty years before Laney’s birth; he purchased his wife’s freedom sometime after their marriage. Laney learned to read and write by the age of four and could translate difficult passages in Latin by the age of twelve, including Julius Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic War.

“Miss Lucy,” as she was generally known, began her own school in 1883 in the basement of Christ Presbyterian Church in Augusta.

The school was chartered by the state three years later and named the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute. Originally Laney intended to admit only girls, but several boys appeared and she could not turn them away. Laney began her lifelong appeal for funding for her school by traveling to a meeting of the General Assembly of the Northern Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis in 1886. She addressed the assembly but received only her fare home. She did, however, obtain the confidence of a lifetime

benefactor, Mrs. Francine E. H. Haines, for whom her school was named. By 1912 the Haines Institute employed thirty-four teachers, enrolled nine hundred students, and offered a fifth year of college preparatory high school in which Laney herself taught Latin. Haines graduates matriculated at Howard, Fisk, Yale, and other prestigious colleges, where they reflected the confidence and pride that Laney and her staff had instilled in their students.

Miss Laney started the first black kindergarten in Augusta, Georgia and the first black nursing school in the city, the Lamar School of Nursing. Many people were influenced by the work that Miss Laney did at Haines. Ms. Mary McCleod Bethune who worked with Miss Laney for a year was so impressed by Miss Laney’s accomplishments that she went to Florida and founded Bethune-Cookman College for Blacks. This outstanding institution continues to thrive and produce thousands of African American students.

After a life of selfless dedication to the education of her people, which focused on the education of her people, Miss Laney died on October 23, 1933. Thousands of people came to her funeral. Her body was buried on the corner of the lawn of the Haines & Normal Industrial Institute. Miss Laney’s spirit lives on and her strong legacy continues to this day.

After her death, the Haines Normal & Industrial Institute was renamed the Lucy Craft Laney Comprehensive High School in her honor, Gwinnett Street was renamed Laney-Walker Boulevard in the honor of her and that of Dr. Charles T. Walker, pastor, civic leader, founder of Tabernacle Baptist Church and co-founder of Atlanta University. There are several other schools throughout the USA that have been named in Miss Laney’s honor. In 1974, in honor of her contributions to Georgia and its children, the portrait of Miss Laney was commissioned by then Governor Jimmy Carter and unveiled in the Georgia State Capitol. In the summer of 1965, my mother then Marian Anderson, graduated from the great and legendary Lucy Craft Laney High School. Twenty  and twenty-one years later, I in (Class of 1985) and my sister Greta ( Class of 1986) walked across the stage at the civic center as graduates of “dear ol’ Laney High”. Walking the halls and yard at Lucy C. Laney, was fun. Sitting in the classroom and wearing my Army JROTC uniform were important elements in building our foundation. Our lives were enriched and our legacy was set as Laney Wildcats who carried the “Pride of the South.”

Thanks you Miss Lucy Craft Laney for your dedication and for being a true educator with a love for learning that continues to live on in Wildcats all over the world.

A WORD OF THANKSGIVING

 

Today is the National Day of Thanksgiving here in the United States. All over the country people cooked, cleaned and connected over meals that covered tables and filled empty stomachs. Gathering of family, friends and folks took place  all in the name of Thanksgiving.

I like so many was blessed to be able to travel and join my family for all the fun, food, and fellowship associated with Thanksgiving. I visited with two different family members homes and it was great just to all be together. The food was incredible: Cornish Hens, turkey, ham, dressing, turnip greens, mac n’ cheese, fried and barbaque chicken, chitterlings, string beans, mixed peas, potato salad, corn pudding, apple cobbler, carrot cake, sweet potato pie,  and red velvet cake.

We laugh and love so much, it was a joy. We watched Football games, Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (a classic) and then 25th Anniversary for Micheal Jackson‘s BAD. What a great day for offering a word of Thanksgiving. I have so much to be thankful and grateful for, I just cannot tell it all. 

I would also like to take this time to offer a word of Thanksgiving for all of the people who have supported YoTrip-Words and Thoughts/Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip/Thursday Thinking by YoTrip as I seek to leave my footprints on the world.

Let us all continue in the spirit of Thanksgiving for this day and beyond!

Write On, Already… National Novel Writing Month

Since 1999 a challenge has been set for those who care to participate and attempt to write a novel during the month of November. It is called the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) event. It is a great  time to put your skills to the test and see if you can produce a novel. 

If you have an interest and want to participate you still have 15 days to get that novel written. If it sounds like a tall order for you there are online as well as local support in many cities and states to help keep you encouraged. 

I salute and honor any one who has joined the challenge and stayed the course, even if they did not write 50,000 words. 

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing on November 1. The goal is to write a 50,000-word (approximately 175-page) novel by 11:59:59 PM on November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and—when the thing is done—the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.

Thursday Thinking by YoTrip for 11/8/12-Happy Pink November (Vol. 11, Iss.2)

Today I was delighted like a kid in the candy store when I turned the corner and came upon this uniquely decorated tree in celebration of breast cancer at Women’s Center for Radiology. The tree was the perfect companion for the women who enter the first waiting room in preparation for going back for their mammogram. One by one as the ladies rounded the corner I saw the light dance in their eyes and a sense of calm entered the room.

So often it is the little things that stop us for a moment to pause and give a silent shout of thanksgiving. Everyday is a day worthy of giving thanks, for Happy Pink November. Keep educating, encouraging, and empowering other with breast cancer awareness.

Congratulations to President Barack Obama on winning the 2012 Presidential Election. Four more years! Let’s unify as a nation.

The Silence Must Be Broken, Men And Breast Cancer

 

The face of breast cancer has historically been that of women, lately there has been an increase in the number of men who are diagnosed with breast cancer. The silence must be broken on men and breast cancer. Now more than ever the rising number of men who are facing breast cancer, is a call to continue to bring about awareness to all who are affected by this disease.

 

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, there will be approximately 2,190 new cases and 410 deaths due to male breast cancer in 2012. While the majority of breast cancer victims are women, there are still 1.2 men out of every 100,000 that will be diagnosed with the disease. 

 

While survival rates are about the same for both genders, men are often diagnosed at a later age because most men don’t recognize or complain about the symptoms.

 

The main types of breast cancer are the same for men and women, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. About 75 percent of the cases start in the cells lining the milk ducts and are known as ductal carcinomas. The other 25 percent are lobular carcinomas, which are cancers that begin in the lobules, or milk-producing glands. However, the majority of male breast cancer are known as infiltrating ductal carcinomas (IDC), meaning they have spread outside the duct and into the surrounding tissues.

 

Age is a major risk factor for male breast cancers, with the majority of cases diagnosed in men ages 65 to 75, Susan G. Komen for the Cure reported. In addition, women and men who inherited a BRCA2 gene mutation are at a higher risk, with seven percent of these men going on to develop breast cancer by the age of 70. Other risk factors include heavy alcohol use, chronic liver disease and obesity. Some hormone drugs used to treat prostate cancer and exposure to large amounts of radiation can also be a factor. http://cbsn.ws/SZN5XD

 

In the fight for bringing about more education, empowerment and encouragement for breast cancer awareness and how it affects men is the right reason to let the silence be broken on men and breast cancer.

The 100 Day SMART GOAL CHALLENGE   "The 100 Day SMART Goal Challenge"

 

Last week I made a stop in your track discovery. As I finished up my daily devotion from my YouVersion app on my phone, I was congratulated for completing my 265th day of study. It hit me…We had 100 days left in the year before we embarked on 2013.

Later that morning I had a conversation with a person who was turning 40 soon and was concerned that she did not know what she wanted to be when she grew up. I told her she was going to have to “represent” to join the 4.0 club! I then went into analyze mode and began to question her about what she like, loved and would do if she could and not worry about failing. The rapid line of questioning stunned her and then she became silent. Then offered that she needed help with establishing a goal. I said okay and then  she left my office . I went to Google and added Goal setting to the search box. I pulled up some information  and went looking for her in her work area. I left the papers in her chair and returned to my office.

Later that evening while out with friends, it came to me. I needed to do something significant in the 100 days to come. I then shared this with Dr. Loretta Faith Harris. I am going to establish an event to help others achieve their goal within the next 100 days. She smiled and I was ready to get home and let my fingers catch up with my mind.

I went to social media (my Facebook page) and created an event page. I decided to call the event, THE 100 DAY SMART GOAL CHALLENGE. I always thought of what I had learned in Goal Setting workshops and lessons. When you determined a GOAL you needed to make it SMART. The SMART acronym is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely. This event would gather people who all want to accomplish something by January 1, 2013.  I was hyped and hoped I could get my Facebook  friends to come aboard and join the movement.  See the information below.
