Celebrating National Family Caregivers Month

In 1994, the National Family Caregivers Association began promoting the celebration of family caregivers during the week of Thanksgiving. President Clinton signed the first presidential proclamation in 1997 and every president since – Democrat and Republican alike – has issued an annual proclamation appreciating family caregivers. As interest grew in family caregiving issues, National Family Caregivers Week became National Family Caregivers Month.

Day in and day out, more than 65 million family caregivers in this country fulfill a vital role on the care team. No one else is in a better position to ensure continuity of care. Family caregivers are the most familiar with their care recipients’ medicine regimen; they are the most knowledgeable about the treatment regimen; and they understand best the dietary and exercise regimen.

Just consider where the thousands of people would be without the  spirit of caregiver. As we see the changing dynamics of families, those who were once active and able have slowed down and need a caregiver.  If you are one who cares for a family member  or close friend, thank you! The sacrifice you make to ensure that the health and welfare of those unable to care for themselves is in tact is worth celebrating your efforts.

It is fitting in this season of giving thanks that the National Family Caregivers Month takes place. What is often a “thankless” job gets put in the spotlight to remind us of the tireless work you do in the name of caring for your family as they rely on your assistance. Caregivers make the difference and matter in the lives of those they provide care for on a daily basis.

I AM GOING PINK FOR OCTOBER

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS during the month of October has taken place for more than 25 years. Even as I write this post someone is feeling the effects of what breast cancer does to try to rob countless women and men of their lives and their living. I do not have the reasons as to why breast cancer has invaded so many people, but I do know that I vow to do my part to help keep it relevant.  

What can we do to keep BREAST CANCER as a focus? We can educate, empower,  and emphasize how important it is to be aware of breast cancer. Education is critically key to everyone’s understanding of BREAST CANCER and its causes, symptoms, treatments and care. Empower the women and men (yes I said men) who face the personal struggles of BREAST CANCER. When a person is dealing with BREAST CANCER they need to know they can go from suffering to surviving via empowerment. Emphasize that BREAST CANCER awareness month is OCTOBER, but this disease is on the job 365 days a year.  

Use the month of awareness of BREAST CANCER to get involved in efforts that you can pursue year around and help with keeping hope alive for the living and honoring those whose life is worth remembering.  Join me by GOING PINK FOR OCTOBER!

Since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly $8 million to support charities in the communities in which it operates. On this date we celebrate the birth of Nancy Green in 1834. She was a Black storyteller and one of the first black corporate models in the United States.

The world knew her as “Aunt Jemima,” but her given name was Nancy Green. The famous Aunt Jemima recipe was not her recipe but she became the advertising world’s first living trademark.

Miss Green was born a slave in Montgomery County, Kentucky. Chris Rutt, a newspaperman, and Charles Underwood bought the Pearl Milling Company and had the original idea of developing and packaging a ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour. To survive in a highly competitive business, the men needed an image for their product.

In 1889, Rutt attended a vaudeville show where he heard a catchy tune called “Aunt Jemima” sung by a blackface performer who was wearing an apron and bandanna headband. He decided to call their pancake flour “Aunt Jemima.”

Rutt and Underwood were broke, so in 1890, they sold the formula to the R.T. Davis Milling Company. Mr. Davis began looking for a Black woman to employ as a living trademark for his product, and he found Nancy Green in Chicago. She was 56 years old. Now is the time to unlock your POTENTIAL for becoming better

 Has life found you feeling stuck in a rut? Are you trapped in a routine that yields you no joy or happiness? Do you sit and wonder about could have, should have, and would haves of life? Are you always thinking about when will things get better for me? Have your hopes and dreams dried up? Have you given up on achieving more or becoming better? If you answered yes to all or a few of these questions, then now is the time to unlock your POTENTIALfor becoming better.Far too often it is easy to get caught up in the grind of daily life and put your POTENTIAL for becoming better on hold, on the back burner, or on ice. You have to decide to get out of the rut of doing things in a robotic manner. You must remove the barriers that have trapped your joy and happiness. Is this a snapshot of you: You drag yourself up and go to work? You spend eight hours thinking about “why am I here”, only to get up and do it all again the next four days. To unlock your potential for becoming better, you have to decide to develop a plan for getting to a better place. Take your POTENTIAL off hold, off the back burner and the ice and put it on a timetable for becoming better.

Wondering about what could, should, or would happen is counterproductive if you are not taking steps to unlock your POTENTIAL for becoming better. When you take the time to act on what you can do, shall do and will do you will unlock your POTENTIAL for becoming better. Decide to talk yourself into doing positive things and spend less time talking yourself out of doing anything. Become your best advocate and encourage yourself to become a better you.

Hopes, dreams and desires have to be given the spotlight in your quest to unlock your POTENTIAL for becoming better. You must first envision where you want to be and what it feels like to be there. Once you have the vision, then you need the drive to what it takes to get to your place of better. After you put vision and drive into action you will need determination to keep hopes, dreams and desires alive and working.

Now is a great time to invest in unlocking your POTENTIAL. You can decide that where you are is not where you want to be any longer. You can take steps to move from off the back burner and to the forefront of becoming a better you. Take the time to plan, act, and become a better you. Be your best advocate and keep encouraging yourself to move forward. Use the formula of vision+drive+determination=hopes, dreams and desires fulfilled. Today is a great day to unlock your POTENTIAL and become a better YOU!

Thursday Thoughts by YoTrip for December 22, 2011-CHRISTMAS Is His Birthday Not Yours! (Vol.12, Iss.3)


“CHRISTMAS is the largest holiday celebrated by people all over the world. Too often everyone gets all wrapped up in the presents that are presented and paying little attention to the greatest gift given. Always keep Christ in Christmas.” 12/21/11 ~~YoTrip

The birth of Jesus Christ is the reason for the season of Christmas, yet everyone acts as if it is their birthday. Newsflash folks stop ripping, running and rushing around for others and take a moment to put Christ back into Christmas.

December 25th will come and many people will be so consumed and absorbed with trees, decorations, that jolly joker Santa Claus, and cooking that they neglect and overlook the Saviour, the Christ.

The greatest present Jesus Christ, became the best gift Christmas that has been sidelined on his own birthday.

Beyond children who get sparkle in their eyes at the thought of toys and treats, adults show strive to give presents but keep Christ as the focus. Children should be taught that it is Christ’s birthday and he must be recognized.

During Christmas as you celebrate with family and friends, pause for the cause and of Christ Jesus and remember it is His birthday not yours. Merry  Christmas to you and yours!

The 13th Day Before Christmas

The 13th Day Before Christmas  and all throughout the land

Many people are out shopping with  plastic in hand

I can run around like the people over spending and overextending  too

The 13th day before Christmas and the retailers are hoping for big sales

Too many people are caught up in the madness on hoping not to fail

The 13th day before Christmas and some are out with long list to fulfill

Looking aimlessly for the perfect gift at a steal

The 13th day before Christmas and you have to say that the year has flown by

The frustration of the season will make some people cry

The 13th day before Christmas and some are looking for a gift to give

Price it is not object, in the coming months how will they live

The 13th day before Christmas and people have put the recession on hold

Come January or February they will be standing in the cold

The 13th day before Christmas and for some all is not well

The joy of the holiday season is not something all will tell

The 13th day before Christmas and some are lost in the rush of it all

Going from here and there on the verge of a fall

The 13th day before Christmas and has anyone stop to take a pause

This is not a celebration of green pointed trees and a man name Clause

The 13th day before Christmas and it is all for the risen Savior  we do celebrate

It is in preparation of the Lord Jesus’ birthday  that we should anticipate

The 13th day before Christmas  we need to shout and rejoice

To honor the King of Kings each person has to make a choice

The 13th day before Christmas and you still can make Christ Jesus the center

On the 13th day before Christmas what oh what shall you render

It is about the Lord Jesus not the sender.

The 13th day before Christmas and now and forever He rules supreme

Lift up the Saviour and let  your praises unfold in the dream.

Make This The Season of Giving Back to People

Make This The Season of Giving Back to People

I mean really make the effort to share with those who have less

When you give from the heart you do not know just you can bless

There are so many people who are in need

They really will benefit from your good deed

In the spirit of sharing and caring for others is our calling card

Decide to act now, it really is not that hard

Believe in the power of paying it forward with small gestures of giving

The pay back to you is  to increase  someone’s living

Tis the season of giving back to those who need it the most

Be genuine in your gift-giving no need to brag or boast

Think of the happiness and joy you will bring when you open your hand  and your heart

The humility will direct your path and give you a place to start

So make this the season of giving back to people and spreading a message of love

Given from  you and sent from the Father above.

Dad’s Deserve A Special Day

The third Sunday in June has been designated as Father’s Day in the United States. Credit for originating the holiday is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She is said to have had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which at the time was becoming established as a holiday. Local religious leaders supported the idea, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd’s father. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge gave his support to the observance, and in 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson officially proclaimed it a national holiday. Observance on the third Sunday of June was decreed by law in 1972.

Although it was originally largely a religious holiday, Father’s Day has been commercialized with the sending of greeting cards and the giving of gifts.http://www.history.com/topics/fathers-day

Father’s deserve a special day for being who they are: the giver of life, the leader of the family, the protector, the provider, the professor in the lives of those are their children. Father’s day lives in the shadow of Mother’s Day, as it recognizes Dad’s for who they are and what they do for their families.

I am thankful and honored to know and have known some great father’s. My grandfather the late Joe L. Anderson, was the father of my Mother and her six siblings. He was big in statute and every bigger in heart and spirit. My granddaddy, was a driving force and a history maker, as the first black deputy sheriff in Richmond County/Augusta, Georgia. The presence of granddaddy in his deputy uniform is fresh in my mind like I was staring up at him, through my six year old eyes. I learned so many things from him and I am glad I had him in my life.

My father, the late William Henry Clay, Sr. was a father of father’s. Dad’s infectious personality drew people to him, he could always make a friend. People enjoyed how he lived life open, giving, hard-working, and always pushing for being better by doing better. A business man, he was “the Black Colonel” as he managed the neighborhood Kentucky Fried Chicken. A servant, as he worked with the Volunteer Grandparents program. A surrogate, he became a “Dad” to so many who were “fatherless” in the community. I am proud to have been apart of his life, living and his legacy for twenty-one years.

Father’s deserve to have this Sunday as their special day. Everyone should do their part to honor your own father or some father who has been a father to you during your life. Father’s I wish you all the best on Sunday as we pause to celebrate the strength and greatness of fatherhood.

Tuesday Thoughts by YoTrip for April 19, 2011, A Lesson Serving with Excellence


Have you ever had an opportunity to experience service delivered in an excellent way? Most people come from all over the planet to the “Mouse House” and the land of Disney to experience the magic of service delivered in an excellent way. A master in the arena of making dreams come true for its visitors, Disney is the bearer of the gold standard in service. Happy employees generate an infectious environment that boils over with smiles, joy and good feelings. Disney has perfected serving with excellence in the theme parks area, but fast-food gentle giant Chick-fil-A  has set the bar for serving  its customers with excellence.

Chick-fil-A has been around for over 40 years serving up excellence and chicken sandwiches from it beginnings in Atlanta, Georgia‘s Greenbrier Mall. Founder and owner S. Truett Cathy has strong beliefs and work ethic that is instilled in the people who are employed by Chick-fil-A. Serving with excellence is not just a passing phrase it is apart of the business philosophy, that Truett Cathy has also passed along to his son Dan Cathy, the current President and Chief Operating Officer.

On a recent visit to Chick-fil-A, I walked into the doors about 15 minutes before closing. The cashier was hard at work mopping the floors in his area. When I approached the counter, Dixon gave me a big smile and said “Good evening mama, it is my pleasure to take your order.” I was pleasantly surprised and asked for a vanilla shake without whip cream or the cherry. Dixon, when over to his co-worker and asked if she would make the shake and she smiled at me and proceed to make one shake for me and another for the person in the drive-thur. There was a young lady standing counting money at one of the side registers, and she smiled and also greeted me. Once his co-worker finished making the shake, Dixon took it and passed it over the counter to me along with my cup of water. 

I proceeded out to my car with shake and water in tow, I placed the shake on the roof of the car to open the door and the filled cup was spilling over. I decided to return to the restaurant and get another cup. When I opened the door I was greeted with a happy hello and a look of concerned. Dixon asked if I dropped the shake and I explained that it was spilling over and I needed a larger cup. Dixon gladly took the cup and said “it is my pleasure, to change out that cup.” The young lady who was counting money smiled and I asked if she was the manager, she said yes. I could see the youthfulness in her face and I joked that she needed a work permit. The young lady then offered “I have been working her since I was 15 years old and I am 19, soon to turn 20.” I chuckled and said that, “Chick-fil-A is a place where people stay forever.” I smiled and both Dixon and the young lady warmly offered me a good night. This was great to see that up until the doors closed the staff at Chick-fil-A were serving with excellence.

Today I visited the Orange Ave. Chick-fil-A and the  staff really displayed excellence in service. There were two ladies working in the lobby carrying a tray filled with mints and items for clearing tables. Armed with smiles, Katherine and Cathy, buzzed around speaking to customers dining in the lobby, “would you like a refill on your drink? It is my pleasure”, ”may I take and empty this tray for you, my pleasure”, “would you like some ice cream? A cone or cup.” These two retirees from BellSouth, loves being around and working with people. 

Sitting and observing both Katherine and Cathy interact with visitors to Chick-fil-A, it made me smile and taught me a valuable lesson in serving with excellence. When you genuinely enjoy the work you do, it shows in how you provide for those who enter in your presence seeking service in excellence.
