Give Thanks

“Give Thanks” is a song that consists of forty-six words penned by Henry Smith in 1978. The song shows “an attitude of gratitude” to God for giving the world His greatest gift, His son Jesus Christ. In these simple yet powerful lyrics the essence of Thanksgiving is expressed. Though written over thirty-two years ago, this song gained it mass appeal and worship popularity in 1986 when it was first performed by Don Moem.

Henry Smith who is a graduate of the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia and is legally blind. Smith was inspired to write “Give Thanks” after hearing a sermon by his pastor based on the scripture 2 Corinthians 8:9 “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (NIV) Henry Smith recognized the importance of being “thankful” for what we have been given.
The fact that he has diminished eyesight has not stopped Henry Smith from exercising his gift, he has written hundreds of songs. Currently, Smith operates a recording studio and plays several instruments by memory. “Give Thanks” has gained in popularity over the years and Henry Smith receives “royalties” that supplement his livelihood. A true worshiper, Henry Smith continually gives all the praises and glory to the Lord Jesus for how he has been blessed.
Today as you gather with family and friends around the table adorned with a cornucopia of delightful dishes, think of all the reasons you have to be thankful. “Give Thanks” and its writer, Henry Smith offer a wonderful example of how to see everyday as a day of Thanksgiving.
