OUR STORY
I would be remissed if I let the month of February come and go and I did not speak to the importance of honoring our vast rich HIStory. Earlier this month I had an opportunity to attend a viewing of a new film “Filling The Gap” which highlights African-Americans during the Civil War period and some of our countless contributions to society. I was captivated by the examination of who we were, who we became and what we did to make the difference. Director Tyrone Young and producer Mary Jackson Fears are to be commended for this project, it drives home why Our Story is still real and relevant. Most importantly is that Our Story still needs to be told to the masses, who are unaware of what took place in a not so distant past. I implore you to find out who you are, where you come from and where you are going, by knowing Our Story and HIStory.
As a college student I remember a t-shirt that I purchased while attending a cultural festival. The caption on the back read, “Know you HIStory or you will be bound and doomed to repeat it”. What a powerful statement of the potential for your demise should you not heed these words. I wore the shirt back then and only had a surface understanding of the deeper meaning it carried.We cannot discount the journey of those who paved the way for us, for on their shoulders we stand. The drive, the determination and the diligence our ancestors displayed is worth shouting from the mountain tops and every place we travel. Share our HIStory with the young unfortunately they are limited in their exposure. It is up to those of us who have the knowledge to keep it going and recognize that it must be relevant, not just in the month of February but in everyday of our lives.
